Oh yeah - 960 "trouble free" miles - my 2002 996 purred the whole way, it just ran awesome.

My 2001 C2 ran like a champ al weekend, great road trip on the long weekend.

Today was cool, had the C2 in for state inspection yesterday, a record low bill of $33.00, swapped it and left the C4S for an oil change - (yes mr.

He's probably still not convinced a car can slow down as fast as I did with out the nose diving.
As it does nearly every day - and has for the 3 years I've owned it. Damn, I love this car! Out of all the car's I've owned, this has been my favorite.
I've been loving mine for my last year of ownership. Celebrated the fact, tonight, by making a couple of passes at the local drag strip. Nothing like redneck racing!
Definitely want to catch up with you, Van, to trade notes, and corner balance my toy.
-Jon
I agree, these are great cars!
Mine was "zippy" today, got my windshield re-sealed, the guy came to my work and did it right there. New brakes, one seat
well, I am getting there
glad you enjoyed yours today too
Mine ran great today too. Took the kids to school in the rain, then the clouds lifted and it was an awesome drive home with the top down.
We need more threads like this, these cars are awesome and we are all privileged to get to drive them.
Thank you for posting this Van. I am sick of this forum being dominated by problem threads and hand-wringing lately. Ya know, all cars have a weakness here and there, but very few cars are fun. These cars are fun. If someone doesn't think so then they indeed own the wrong car. But that wouldn't be the car's fault.
Drove all the way to work, and didn't get a single CEL. Also, drove all the way home and the IMS bearing held out.
My biggest issue was there was always someone in my way! BTW, my commute is 25 minutes of curvy country roads through wooded parkland, and not a single traffic light. I worry more about the local deer population than my RMS.
ps. hope I didn't just jinx myself
Funny that you mention it, because today I really drove it like I stole it, and I had a blast ! The exhaust mod is pure genius and make it even better. Now if only I had a 25 miles of commute in winding roads without traffic light, that would be nice
No CEL light, and with my new cat.converter the engine sounds perfect.
At the current market prices, nothing beat the 996 ! If I had known this before, i think I'd even add a couple more $$$ for a gt3 ... to get even more out of it.
hell, even with the CEL on due to cats and the fuel gauge reading empty (due to the C4 not filled past 1/2 full design issue), and a slight vibration from a bent wheel compliments of our lovely, not a curve in sight, uneven, pothole ridden Houston roads....
I loved every moment driving it like I do everytime I get in it!
Just a few seconds to drop the top and then drive it like I stole it as philoo said wishing it was already next weekend so I can take it to the track and REALLY drive it like it was meant to be driven!
I only have to get in to any other run of the mill econobox to feel sorry for anyone that chooses to drive one every day! They don't know what they are missing! The only feeling that comes close to it is taking a ride on the motorcycle! (Which I would do if only I could figure out whether it will rain with this lovely Houston weather!)
I'm sure my car was running great today but I was a total drag. Putt putt here and there especially the hwy turn I surprised a cop on. He's probably still not convinced a car can slow down as fast as I did with out the nose diving. I slowed so fast I think it threw his depth preception off so much he wobbled loosing his balance. Car sure stops on a dime. Still trying to figure out what the far right pedal is for
Lebanon Valley, I presume? I bet you had a good time and I bet a lot of people scratched their heads!
Unless you have a GT3 or other aftermarket suspension with adjustable spring purchases, we can't corner balance the car.
But we should still get together some time for a beer!
Weather has been great lately in Florida and I've really been enjoying both the Turbo and my Cab. I alternate driving days for them so neither feels left out! What other car can you buy today that is anywhere close to the deal on these cars!!! I love my Porsche(s)!
I was not that fortunate....MY COMMUTE IS 3 MILES!!. But I live in the country and work across the street from a corn field. I did take a nice line at a corner this morning too...
Thanks Van! Nice to have a 'Glass half full' thread.
Coming up on my two year anniversary. Bought it with 28,000 miles. Just past the 62,000 mark. Daily driver all year. Have a DE under my belt now - more to come. Top down date car with wife at night. What a machine! Can't imagine leaving it in a garage.
I've had my 02 for 3 months and my biggest complaint is the short distance to work (6 kms) - I have always loved working close to home for various reasons - but since I got this car, I am now wishing my work is further away from home. I even sometimes take a longer route to work to enjoy the drive.
I am truly lucky to have the chance to drive such a car - even though from a financial sense, I should not have a car like that.
All is well here. no cels, car runs great. Took my coworker for her first ride in a porsche and few days ago. She loved it. all types of twisty back roads to get some lunch.
I have come the conclusion that I really should drive it more. I look at the weather and see the possibility of rain and I take my DD instead. What the hell for!!!!????
Hell I may just sell my daily driver, buy a beater for the winter and really drive the 996 everyday.
Mine is well, needs rear tires... BAD!!
Have to go way upstate NY this weekend to see the father in law (700miles round trip!) , wish I could take the 996 but since I'm bringing the wife, kid and dog I will slum it in the Cayenne.
hehehe.... upstate to us is anywhere in NY outside of the city..... yeah my 996 is bitchin. I am now looking for some gt3 brake ducts since she so deserves it.
Well, as a new 996 owner my car drive like a dream!!! I drive it like it was stolen and dont look back. My previous car was a 2000 Saleen Mustang SC with 411hp at the wheels and 399ft/lb at 4200rpm, it was a brutal kick in the face but fast. The 996 is quick, fast, fun and reliable. Having the time of my life with this "motor car".. I question myself every day on why I didnt buy one sooner.
Cheers!!
OK - I'll chime in here because I've had the "cat got the mouse" feeling for the last two days. Left San Diego Friday morning and after slogging through LA up the I-5 over the grapevine the mass of traffic must have bored me to tears as I completely spaced and wound up on the 99N instead of I-5N. After discovering the error I found a back farm road to get back to I-5 and took the car out to redline in the first 3 gears (geez these are awesome cars). Up I-5 to 46W and past the James Dean Memorial Intersection (driving this road you can kinda figure why he racked up the Speedster here). Then through wine country outside Paso Robles. More boring road up 101N until Salinas then through the back roads to Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, etc.. After two days of obligatory wedding and visits (not mine) then it was down the coast on Hwy 1 to Big Sur all the way down to Cambria. There is no equal for driving the Big Sur coast in a Porsche - period! Then back over 46 through wine country to 101S to Santa Ynez valley wine country. Spent the night then over to Hwy 158 past Lake Cachuma, through the twisties to Santa Barbara all the while playing cat and mouse with a Ferrari and a new Audi R8. Sadly this trip ended on Monday back in San Diego after a mere 960 miles of driving. Oh yeah - 960 "trouble free" miles - my 2002 996 purred the whole way, it just ran awesome. Top speed = Hwy 46 110mph, MPG = 24.0 average city/hwy, speed = 50 mph average, oil consumption = < 1/2 qt., weather = clear and sunny the entire 4 days, driver and passenger = very happy!!!
Yeah, it was definitely a one time deal. No doubt it's very hard on the car, given the way the thing hooks up at the launch. I've never drag raced, and managed a 13.75 at 101, so I wasn't disappointed. There was definitely some photos taken, too. ;-)
PSS9's came on the car. You know me, I can never just stay stock.
Mine too drives beautifully. '05 C4S bought 06/03/2010 with 9.7k miles now with 14k.
No oil burning no problems...only mods are Pioneer AVIC 710 and clear sides. Looking to participate in autoX for 1st time. Car is DD.
mine drives great too...i drive 13 miles in traffic on the 10 freeway (horrible), but everytime i get a quick break..i floor the hell out of it...ill never get back into a commuter car! Ive had it for about 6 months..put about 15k miles on it and still look at it with a smile every time I see it parked at work or at home
I have my '99 996 for 2 years now. My first Porsche. She runs great each and every ride. Responsive, fun, fast, did I say fast, and most cant tell she's a '99.
Drove mine to my wife's work to meet her for a glass of wine in the vineyard at the end of the day. Ran fine even though I need to get new brake pads. Can't wait to get the new pads and the new brake ducts from Sunset. Then I can drive it hard again!
Yay for good running cars!
I noticed especially in higher rpms my car lurches forward when stomping the gas making me have to use the brakes some times. I hope the other cars go away.
My 2004 996 is also running great - drove it to work every day his week.
Had the top down on the way home every day - I love that sweet sounding flat six with the top down
Hi Van!
Loving it. Thanks for all the advice pre and post-purchase. BTW, I confirmed with Auto Haus - it does have a new Flat 6 IMS Bearing retrofit (along with the new clutch and RMS). Looking forward to DE in June with CVR at WGI!
Woo-hoo.
Bill
Drove from Austin to Houston this evening with the top down the whole way.
Cruising at 80 (sometimes a little faster
) with a little SRV and ZZ Top.
What a blast!
Thanks for this thread, guys. My commute is 28 miles, the first 10 are country back roads in MN, the last 15 in traffic. So the best time of day is when I hit that last 10 going home with the top down and the long-suffering Minnesota sun working hard to warm things up. Big smile at that point...
Man o Man this is a great thread to read. Need to get her out of the garage. Since the DE at LRP in April, she got cleaned and has been sitting under wraps for too long. Should have gone to the PCA club race, but spaced on that one...bummer......Friday she goes for a tech inspection and then next week it is off to WGI for Cups and Saucers....can't freakin' wait, so very excited. Signed up for some coaching and the wife is coming to visit! Next up will be to install the new suspension goodies. Hey Van, can you corner balance and align these babies with you awesome garage set up? I now I can get some poweder coating down while I wait, but didn't realize you were moonlighting as a performance shop, too! Let me know. See you shortly.
My car ran super great today! I love parking far away from everyone else so that I can have more time to stare at her while im walking back...My grin gets bigger and bigger. A detailed Arena Red looks amazing in the sunlight. Buying this car (instead of a new altima or civic) was one of the best decisions of my life.
My track car is broken, so I took the 996 to Lime Rock yesterday. Not only did the engine not blow up, but the car even passed 158,000 miles on the track!
This was my first time driving on the Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec tires on the track (ridiculously long name...) and they were really good. This car has only had the PS2s on it, and I was always pretty impressed with those on the track, but I'm happy to report that the DDSZSSs are at least as good, perhaps even better - and cost a little less. Driving hard for 30 minutes only caused minimal grip fall-off due to heat. No noticeable tread block squirm and good steering feedback.
Great thread! Took mine to work today, had a great drive on the way in. Poured rain on the way home, and only seemed to drive better in the wet. I wanted one of these cars for as long as I can remember, and every time I turn the key it re-affirms my decision to get one.
Drive on!
DS
I love mine, too.
However she is hurting right now.
she has 126k on the clock and came down with what sounds like the IMS death rattle.
No worries. I delivered her to EPE yesterday and she is in good hands.
Can't wait to get her back.
Love that car!
Heck. I'm still having fun backing it out of the driveway.
It's a joy to drive every time I get behind the wheel. It can do things 99.99% of the cars on the road can't.
I thoroughly enjoy mine every day. Not sure why I still have the Aurora 4.0, except maybe when the 996 won't do for a trip to Home Depot and the trip doesn't require one of the junk trucks, so it is off in the luxury and power of the Northstar V-8. Yet every day when I tell myself to give the Olds a run and take it to work, even on a really rainy day, I can't walk past the 996's with-out saying the heck with it, this is why I have them, so off I go.
Today was cool, had the C2 in for state inspection yesterday, a record low bill of $33.00, swapped it and left the C4S for an oil change - (yes mr. service advisor, I know, I know, way ahead of schedule).
Drove the C2 to pick up the C4S, had a coffee and browsed the showroom, nice 991 Cab stickered at over $120k, top down, looked and smelled so nice and I was thinking, gee, I'd never be able to buy a brand new Porsche.
Left the C2 to pick it up later, service delivers the C4S to me, sounds great idling with the PSE. I get in the car and realize that this one looks and smells like new! Drives great and on the way home I realize how lucky I am to be able to be driving a Porsche and wonder how I'll adjust if/when the time comes that a car like the olds will have to be my primary ride.
Perhaps they saying "Porsche, there is no substitute" is more than marketing buzz.
But no worries, that day isn't today, so I'm going to keep on enjoying. 5 years in the C2 and I am still looking forward to picking her up from the dealer for the drive home.
LOL - on the way to pick up the C2 there was a 95 Aurora in front of us, the original aurora - I had one and loved it - my wife sees it and says "God - what an awful looking car, I am so glad you traded it on the Porsche" Then she follows with, "and that Burgandy one in the driveway, that's just an ugly old man's car and you ought to dump it". Yep - she is in quite the foul mood tonight - no dessert on the way home for her - and I will soon be in the garage polishing the C4S for a little peace and quiet.
The trio - the wife said "the red one is ugly, you should trade yours for the silver convertible" The 2009 Turbo Cab - priced to sell at just $114,990. Me thinks I'll just hang on to the C2 for a bit - after all, it runs great and came without a payment book.
I spent about 90 miles driving to a couple of meetings today, but unfortunately, had the top up.
I drove on the most beautiful highway in the US: I280 between Palo Alto and San Francisco, running pretty much parallel to the San Andreas Fault.
Wife is coming home and we're going out to dinner. She recommended that we take her car, an AMG CL55, so that she can fill up on gas before her early morning tomorrow. As kind as I could, I asked her to fill it up herself before she got home so that we could take the 911 instead. I just love driving that car.
I've only had my pcar for 2 months and I'm still giddy each time I get behind the wheel. The crazy thing is how effortless it makes the driving experience. It's almost dangerous for me to drive another vehicle - woah, took that corner too fast... Where my 996 cab just flys around and doesn't even care that I might be doing twice the speed posted for the twisties! I've never been one to drive a bit wild - but this car makes everything so smooth, effortless, and easy - wow, was I really going that fast?
Too funny. This morning on the way to work in the C2 there was a Prius stopped next to me at a light. Once through that light you are on the interstate. So I notice the guy looking the C2 over, when the light turns green he scoots like it's a drag race and I couldn't help but to laugh it was so funny. This near perfectly silent car looking like it's taking a hole shot.
No I didn't race him, just did my normal get up to speed and passed him with the PSE howling. Then I thought good for him, his eco concern sort of offsets my carbon foot print and I can finish my 30 mile cruise with less guilt, and a ton more smiles.
Oh, did I mention my car ran great today?
Quite the old thread you have awakened here. Is your car green? Hard to tell from the small picture, but if so, very nice.
I also completed a road trip of 1,400 miles this weekend up to Wawa Ontario and made sure to drive Highway 129 hard. Would be a far trip for you, but I highly recommend it as it is one of the best roads I have driven in the province.
