Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

31 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I see a lot of talk about 996 cars being the bastards of the 911 family. I originally setout to buy either a G50 car or an early 993. I was sold by the masses that I didn't want a 996, the only one I had ever driven was a tiptronic years ago and don't remember being super impressed...again probably because of the preconceived notions I had in my head. I run a small dealership here in Birmingham, and noticed that a guy wanted to trade in an '01 996 with 80k miles. I drove it and loved it...so of course, I bought it. For the money, I don't see how I could pass it up to pay twice to three times what I paid for a car that may have more "soul", but not as much performance. Don't get me wrong, I still want to own an aircooled 911, but for now, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I look forward to learning a few things from you guys

POST 3Original post

Some have sold them for another and wish they hadn't. Most seem to love them.

POST 4Original post

Buying or not buying a car because of what other people think is about as nonsensical as letting your friends determine who you can date/marry. Good job going with your instincts instead of seeking approval from the Internet. Interestingly, the number of people I've seen post comments like "I bought a 996, and damn, it's just terrible compared to my (insert a year lower than 1999) 911." Talking crap about a car you haven't owned reminds me of high school - specifically, teenage guys talking about sex...the utter lack of experience doesn't interfere with the urge to talk about it constantly.

POST 5Original post

Nice to hear you like your water-pumper. Doesn't mean you can't or won't own an earlier air/oil-cooled Porsche either. Welcome to the club.

POST 7Original post

Yep, 1st Porsche was 928 loved / hated it, now miss it. Owned several bugs stock to severely hopped up. lost count of 914's I've owned. now the 996 C4 and it is everything a Porsche should be. Head an shoulders above the predecessors I've owned.

Well I picked my 1st two wives so might give that friends thing a try luckily I have had better experiences with cars...

POST 10Original post

Congratulations on your purchase and I'm sure you'll enjoy it for years to come.

POST 11Original post

When I bought my 996 a little over two years ago I was also looking at a 993 for identical money. Told the dealer I wanted a daily driver and he recommended I go with the 996. 16k miles thus far and it has performed flawlessly.

POST 12Original post

Congrats Nick! Silver is a great color. How about some more (better) pics?

POST 14Original post

I have owned a 993, a 996 and now a 997. I loved my previous cars and love my current C4S. I found the 996 to be a more comfortable car for long rides [used to often drive Connecticut to Jacksonville FL]. I have to say that I regret selling the 993 but not the 996 ... says a lot about that air-cooled machine! Enjoy the one you brought to the "dance". That 996 is one great car.

POST 15Original post

I just bought one too, I dont regret it (so far - touch wood ). I dont give a f**K if anyone doesnt like it, but so far I've been given pretty good comments. More so than my 370z. I was planning on getting another newer Z or a G37. The 996 is a great drive (well I kinda wish it had lumbar - kinda sore on the back for me after a long drive). I bought the best example I could find. Im glad I turned down a few first and saw a few worn and beaten ones. It taught me to be patient and keep hunting. I'm sure you'll enjoy it for a long time. Post some more pics for us.

POST 16Original post

Gotta agree - the 996 is a great car! Can't wait to turn that key every day. Congrats and welcome, Nick!

POST 17Original post

I don't care what cools it. This is a great car. Hope you enjoy it.

quick hijack--the center of the seat back is easily removed then you can shape/place a piece or foam or other filler to give the support your looking for. carry on...

POST 20Original post

My 99 C2 has an air adjustable lumber region on the drivers side. Maybe the passenger side as well. Not tried that side. Is this only exclusive to the 99 model? I doubt it very much but would like to hear other year owners comments.

POST 21Original post

No, my '01 had it too.

POST 24Original post

Mine didn't come with any lumber, have to get my own wood.

POST 25Original post

I have a hand towel that I keep behind the seat for occasional use. I just roll it up and stick it in the small of my back on long drives. Inelegant, but works great.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 29Original post

I daily drive my '02 C2. On the way in to work this morning, on the 405 which is notoriously stop-n-go at best, traffic was flowing pretty well and I was able to just hang out in 4th/5th gear and cruise. I was happy on my way to work. For a Monday morning, that's saying something. I honestly can say I've never had a car I like as much as my 996. I've certainly paid more, and had some cars I've liked, but this car is my favorite by a long shot. If you'd have asked me before this year, I was not going to be a Porsche guy. Honestly, without the dip in 996 values, I didn't think I could afford to be one. If there's an upside to the depressed values, it provides an entry for guys like me to realize what great cars these are. I foresee more Porsches in my future, but for now, I'm happy with the one I've got, and intend to invest and maintain it to keep it the great driver's car it is. Oh, and I'm the guy who shows up at Cars-n-Coffee on Saturday's and has no problem proudly parking my car with the other Porsches.
