Same with me, the new mounts changed the car just as Jamie (OP) mentioned.

I replaced the original motor mounts with new Porsche motor mounts and noticed a marked reduction in vibration in the cabin.

I've had nearly new OEM mounts which replaced my original mounts and the change wasn't as dramatic as my expectations.

Suggestion
For anyone that hasn't seen the kind of "performance" related improvements they were expecting out of new replacement mounts, I'd recommend trying out the FF if you wanna go to that next level.

Suggestion
I hate to you this word but "assuming" the space between the exhaust tip to bumper is a good indicator the mounts need to be or should be replaced, does anyone have pictures that show exhaust tips both before and after motor mounts are replaced?

I replaced my transmission mount with the semi solid wevo, made a huge difference as far the whole car shaking under heavy load, only thing is I feel like I hear every engine sound possible....really doesn't help with my anxiety.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Swapped out my motor mounts tonight its a simple job I was expecting more work. 35 minutes tools out to tools away.
I had placed my jack under the engine to support it when removing the original mount nuts. When I dropped the new mount in I had to jack the motor up over an inch! That's how much it had sagged.
All the complaints I was having with clunks and notchy shifting were addressed with the mount change. The tips now fill the bumper very nice as well. Glad to have this place where things like this are discussed or I would have never known to change them.
My car feels like a new car no noises and it seems tighter.
Made a huge difference when I changed out mine on the 996. Smoother shifting, cruising and no more vibration at idle. Next to my Fister D's it was the best "bang for the buck" I spent on the car.
I jacked the rear up about 4" on each side and blocked the wheels. Then I was able to just lay under it with an 18mm extension and ratchet and remove the nuts. Just make sure you support the engine. Then its as simple as removing the airbox to do the passenger side. On the drivers side there is an air pump it has a bolt and a nut holding it and a hose on it. Simply pull the hose off and the nut and bolt out and swing it out of the way. Literally its an hour job start to finish tops.
I went OEM I did a bunch of reading and everyone mentioned they noticed more vibration with aftermarket ones. Being my DD in the summer I wanted comfort. I am going to sent my worn out ones to Function First for their urethane upgrade.
Next on the list!
I was so close to getting Wevo mounts but in my research everyone said they were more harsh. I was looking for more comfort for my summer DD.
Wow. 35 minutes! I paid for over an hour labour to change engine mounts first when I got the 996. Now that I have my own garage I need to start doing more of my own maintenance.
I replaced my motor mounts and transmission mounts and fount the tranny mount had the greatest effect on performance. I actually didn't really notice the mounts. Granted this is on a 996turbo and not a c2 or c4.
Changed mine last weekend. Old ones were from 2003 and had sagged a lot. After replacing with ones I bought from Amazon (Rein) the car is significantly smoother. Engine at idle has no vibrations, revving is butter smooth and car feels less lumpy in the back during spirited cornering.
Educate me: Am I better off with OEM/equivalent street mounts, or FunctionFirst semisolids?
I don't race; do the semisolids transmit substantial harmonic vibration to the cabin?
I'd rather not have my ears ringing when I get out of the car.
I welcome some direction, as I've got the 'hanging exhaust pipe' sign on my '03.
Rein are what I used as well. They fit perfectly in my case. You bring up another good point about the smoothness. My car had a shaky idle the whole car has a low frequency vibration. That is now gone and its butter smooth. It really does feel like a different car.
The Oem and function first to my understanding minimize the lower frequency vibrations. The other re engineered aftermarket mounts are more harsh.

I've had nearly new OEM mounts which replaced my original mounts and the change wasn't as dramatic as my expectations. This could've been because my original mounts could've been fine to begin with. I then stepped up to FF and it was like night and day for me. I then purchased Torque Solutions mounts which are basically the same as all other poly mounts. I ended up going back to FF if that tells you anything.
Just like with any "performance" part though, there is gonna be a compromise between comfort and performance. I believe the FF mounts does a good job fulfilling both ends.
For anyone that hasn't seen the kind of "performance" related improvements they were expecting out of new replacement mounts, I'd recommend trying out the FF if you wanna go to that next level.
I just ordered a set of the Rein mounts via Amazon...$135.xx shipped is kind of a no brainer. I've experienced the "water sloshing in a bucket" through tight turns at 60mph. or so. I'm hoping it'll tighten this up a bit. I'll post impressions afterwards...
^Per above (Alpine)^ I'll probably send my stock mounts out to FF once I get them out, and have them upgraded to urethane. Might also order the Trans mount insert at the same time...
100% vibration, rattles, thumps for instance I had a thud on hard stops. Like you could feel something in the back lift up and settle down again. For sure it was the engine moving around. The Rein mounts cleaned this all up. Idle now at a stop light is smooth no more roughness at all. I thought it was just my engine being slightly rough at idle but nope it was the mounts. Its butter smooth now.
I think you'll see an improvement when you replace worn OE mounts with any of the options that have been discussed in this thread, including simply replacing the worn mounts with new OE mounts. Personally, I didn't find the NVH issue to be significant at all with the Wevo semi-solid mounts. There was less noise and vibration with the new Wevos than there was with my worn OE mounts. Whichever mounts you choose, I think that this is a good investment for an older car.
Just a word of caution that the transmount inserts could cause quite a bit more NVH than using just the FF mounts. Consensus is if you want to keep it streetable and are sensitive to NVH, just get poly engine mounts. Poly Engine mounts + poly transmission inserts = quite a bit more NVH with less return. OTOH, if you don't really care about NVH and/or your car is a track car, go for it. IMO, 80% of the performance and slop come from the engine mounts. Tranny mount doesn't have as much weight to deal with during weight transfer situations.
I replaced the original motor mounts with new Porsche motor mounts and noticed a marked reduction in vibration in the cabin. A year later I put in the FF transmission insert and noticed an Increase in vibration and transmission noise in the cabin. The FF insert did give the shifter a much more "connected" feel with more positive shifts though. Also I was nervous that the original transmission mount rubber was on its way out and putting an entire new transmission mount (on my '99 cab) was not a job I wanted to do.
What made you think that? Usually the transmission mount survives longer than engine mounts. IMO FF engine mount with OEM tranny mount is the best combo for the streets for most folks. It wouldn't hurt the hardcore peeps to get FF tranny inserts either though.
Quick question for those that have done the motor mount swap. Where are you supporting the engine? From that little support point aft of the oil pan? I saw a diy on Pelican that showed someone supporting the engine with a jack right on the oil pan.
I used a hunk of wood (about a foot-long chunk of scrap 2 x 12) on a 3-ton floor jack, supporting the engine by the oil pan. The big surprise, as another poster noted, is how much more you'll have to jack up the engine to fit the new mounts.
Very helpful insight; thank you!
I think I'll try the FFs. Worst case scenario: I hate them, and then re-replace them with OEM or Reins.
Best case: better shifts, less 'clunking' under certain situations, with minimal NVH.
Driving my car again last night, I can't believe how much better it handles with the Reins mounts vs. 16 year old OEM mounts. I can even get a tire to slip now!
I hate to you this word but "assuming" the space between the exhaust tip to bumper is a good indicator the mounts need to be or should be replaced, does anyone have pictures that show exhaust tips both before and after motor mounts are replaced?
Jim: If you haven't replaced them, just go ahead and do it, mine were original on my 99 with 36K miles and the difference in handling is really, really noticeable, plus I've been able to squeal the tires for the first time!
Invite Gabor out, he'll have it done in 10 minutes....but it really only took me about 30 minutes.
Well then...I need to address my motor mounts.

Pretty sure they are original and I'm at 76K miles now.
An hour tops. It's a 1 hour DIY job in the garage, on jack stands, including tool cleanup and a beer afterwards.
Yep 100%! I think you just got your car recently correct? Same with me, the new mounts changed the car just as Jamie (OP) mentioned.
Yep - in May. I've been suspecting my motor mounts needed to be looked at since I'm getting a lot of vibration and a slight wobble from the rear. Doesn't look to be too bad a job. Will do it later this summer. Thanks for the help!
