In my infinite wisdom, the one clamp that had a small leak I wrapped some of the exhaust repair tape around the catback and x-pipe, then slid the clamp over and tightened down.

Maybe if it is just the clamp you might be able to Dremel cut that off and replace with a new clamp.

The OEM Porsche exhaust sleeve clamps are notorious for not sealing up after a few tighten/loosen cycles.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer but thought I would ask just in the off chance someone has an idea I haven't thought of or found online. I recently installed a new catted x-pipe. The OEM Porsche exhaust sleeve clamps are notorious for not sealing up after a few tighten/loosen cycles. In my infinite wisdom, the one clamp that had a small leak I wrapped some of the exhaust repair tape around the catback and x-pipe, then slid the clamp over and tightened down. Leak fixed.... permanently it looks like. The sleeve clamp is bonded to both pipes via the exhaust repair tape I put underneath. I called a couple local muffler shops and neither have any idea if it could be broken, and neither can give it a shot until next week. I really have no interest in an exhaust shop going to town trying to break a seal on my exhaust system anyways, I am liable to end up with a damaged x-pipe and catback exhaust I am sure. Thankfully I very much like my current exhaust combo of catted x-pipe + B&B mufflers as I will likely be stuck with them awhile unless anyone has any last ditch ideas for me. So much for my plan of installing gutted PSE mufflers today. Cheers

POST 2Original post

From what I have read, once the tape is heated and bonded it becomes permanent, and is impervious to solvents. Maybe if it is just the clamp you might be able to Dremel cut that off and replace with a new clamp. But it sounds like you wrapped the inner part of the pipe, slid that into the outer part and clamped it. My guess is it is not going to come apart. You might have to remove the cats and x-pipe as one whole unit and see if you can twist it apart. Sounds like a lot of work. In the meanwhile, since you like your current exhaust, just stick with it (no pun intended!).

POST 3Original post

I'd heat the crap out of it first, and if that doesn't work cut the pipe off. Any decent exhaust shop would be able to weld something on to the end of the pipe that would slip over the other pipe, and a grinder should take care of the issues you caused with the tape.

POST 4Original post

Torch will "carbonize" it and then it will come off. Stinks, do it outside.
