I run a used car dealer so I have access to lifts and tools and all, but I'm a novice mechanic at best.
Leading evidence: 'Run used car dealer so i have access' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect clutch (it was fine)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Looking at my bill it was around 10 hours of labor to replace my RMS, IMS, and inspect the clutch (it was fine).

Suggestion
I bought the LN Engineering IMS myself for around $600 and had the indy replace IMS/RMS/Clutch for $1800 including remaining parts and new oil filter plus plugs.

Definitely using an Indy for my soon to be clutch and RMS/IMS.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm sure this is on here but I couldn't find the answer I'm looking for, and this is a forum, not Google, so i'd like a little interaction.
What is sort of a ball park of what I can expect to pay to replace rms/ ims/ clutch at an Indy ship and is it something I could do on my own. I run a used car dealer so I have access to lifts and tools and all, but I'm a novice mechanic at best.
I paid about $4K, with tax, for RMS, IMSB upgrade to LNE, clutch kit and pressure plate at a good indy shop in Seattle. Pressure plate was about $1K, so just under $3K for what you quoted.
Just dropped mine off tonight, the quote was for $2200 for the clutch/bearing by itself, but it's actually being done cheaper as part of a package that includes the transmission coming out (so the only extra labor is for the bearing itself).
Looking at my bill it was around 10 hours of labor to replace my RMS, IMS, and inspect the clutch (it was fine). At that point replacing the clutch is pretty easy and wouldn't take more than an hour or so The biggest expense is just getting to the stuff that needs replacing.
As far as doing it yourself, if you feel comfortable working on cars and have the tools needed (mostly the lifts and jacks) then I'd say to go for it. It seems pretty straight forward, other than you're working with pretty large and heavy things - and if it took my shop 10+ hours, this seems like it would be a pretty decent weekend project or maybe a few weekends project.
My shops rate was or is around $115 an hour or so, I think, and they gave me the parts pretty much at what we could buy them for retail online.
But, either way the hours spent working on it are going to be about the same or in that ballpark across the board.
Just a comparison that may or may not be helpful; my dealer price JUST for the RMS was quoted at 2108.46. Yikes! Definitely using an Indy for my soon to be clutch and RMS/IMS.
I bought the LN Engineering IMS myself for around $600 and had the indy replace IMS/RMS/Clutch for $1800 including remaining parts and new oil filter plus plugs. I guess that's $2400 total.
I bought the RMS, LN IMS bearing and the clutch kit for about 14-1500. My indie charged around 1500, so I was all in for around 3K. Of course, the bearing was perfect. Makes a great, but expensive, paperweight!
Ours is finally getting done this week (anyone else have the stomach to wait 15 years?
) and I expect the same thing. I'm considering have the little bugger gold plated
So I put it back on the rack yesterday and the oil is definitely coming from where the RMS is. All the other oil was just residual. Time to spend some $$
Also, just called and got a quote from an indy shop about a mile from my house.
Starts at $850 for just RMS up to $2800 for RMS, IMS, and clutch.
Im pretty happy with that, it helps Im sure that the guy I spoke with and I worked together at BMW for years.
I'd argue that the most labor demanding work is to remove the tranny, which he is going to do anyway for the RMS. the rest is parts. $600 for a clutch kit, $600 for IMS + extra hour for the bearing replacement, & fresh oil/filter +$100. $2400 -$2500 is the magic number.
Sounds good. It's simple really. A good mechanic should be able to remove the tranny and do all the work in 1 full day at most. If I were a mechanic, my quote would be: $1000 for a full day of labor and the rest is parts. 600 + 600 + 20 + 100 = $2320. And if you need a new flywheel, we may need to add that to the list. But then, I'd be the
honest
mechanic, and we know how many of those are around and still in business.
