The "clip" that is installed, is actually more of an assembly line aid to keep the injectors in the rail untill it can be installed on the assembly line.

The injectors (as recommended above) seem like a good place to start - if they're leaking down pressure/fuel into the cylinders after you shut the car off it's bad for several reasons besides smelling bad on startup.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2002 C2 runs like a swiss watch with 180,000 kms on it, but the stink of petrol on a cold start really annoys me. Reading lots of the Interweb tells me its extra fuel to 'fire up the cats'. Replaced the 20 year old O2 sensors , hoping it would help.......nope. We have no emissions rules round here, so I can remove cats if I like, but where do I find a simple map/tune to install using my 'genuine' PIWIS? or any other suggestions??

POST 2Original post

Order 6 new injectors and replace. https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...606-122-00-M14 Just giving you this link so that you have the correct part #. You need the white injector for a 2002. It is recommended by wiser gentleman than myself on this forum to not use rebuilt or cleaned injectors.

POST 3Original post

Mine never smells like fuel on startup and i'm sure it's running similar startup maps as yours. The injectors (as recommended above) seem like a good place to start - if they're leaking down pressure/fuel into the cylinders after you shut the car off it's bad for several reasons besides smelling bad on startup. Order up those new injectors right away - your engine/cylinders will thank you

POST 4Original post

Has anyone replaced their injectors as preventative maintenance? I watched the video series on bore scoring and think it might be a good thing to do before they fail

POST 5Original post

Ill be doing them this winter as a pm. They r not that expensive around $35, my truck injectors r around $350 ea.

POST 6Original post

[QUOTE=philbert996;17037305]Has anyone replaced their injectors as preventative maintenance?/QUOTE] Yes, injectors should be a PM item, 20K miles or 5 years?. At a minimum, a leak down test annually?. Totally agree from available data that that injector health is part of the bore scoring problem.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 17037769

Depends on whether MK-1 or MK-2. MK-1 are 4 times the price.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 17037938

yea but an easy mod allows the use of mk2 injectors in a 3..4l. U just have to put a groove in for the clip.

POST 14Original post

I saw that, but that's not a job I would do myself and I don't know if my indy would take the time to modify them. On a side note, I don't know if this is related so don't flame me if it isn't. I noticed a fuel smell, not at start up but after driving for a while. My cam deviations were out of spec. I had my chains and pads replaced and I haven't noticed the smell since.

POST 15Original post

Steady hands, Dremel, and fine point sharpie. It's a two beer job. One before. One after. Choice of beer depends on steadiness of your hands.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17035714

Is it the smell of unburned petro, or the smell of incomplete combustion of mostly burned petrol? If the latter, then I would suspect cats and/or secondary air injection.

POST 20Original post

Look quite different but the "important" dimensions are all the same. Included the pic of the box for that reason.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 17037305

[QUOTE=golock911;17037922] You got to be kidding! Where the heck did you pull these numbers from?

POST 25Original post

The 996.1 injector is an "EV-1" design, the 996.2 injector is an "EV-6" design BUT still has an EV-1 wire connector. The 996.2 injector flows a little more than the 996.1 injector, but the 996.1 was designed to run "no ethanol" fuel, so with the 10% ethanol laced fuel that is all that's available, the 996.2 injector is actually a better / more ideal / close to factory flow than the 996.1 injector for 996.1 cars. The "clip" that is installed, is actually more of an assembly line aid to keep the injectors in the rail untill it can be installed on the assembly line. Many car lines for years used these same injectors with no clips, once installed they could not "fall out". I would suppose it could also be a safety item if perhaps you were in a bad enough accident to where the fuel rail was knocked off the engine, it "mite" help prevent a leak.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 17043307

It`s a safety feature not just an assembly aid. If the fuel rail bolts ever back out, the injectors would stay in place instead of popping off under fuel pressure.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 17037922

[QUOTE=Imo000;17043236] Yes! I am kidding and I hope no one takes those numbers seriously other than to think about what might be a realistic PM for older injectors. I did try to pose the numbers as questions. Apologies if that didn't come across. Many threads bring up issues about injectors. They've been implicated as part of the bore scoring issue. All of them that haven't been replaced yet are really old. Is it sufficient to just run a leak down test every so often or are they cheap enough to just change out when you are worried about them? Once changed, the time to not worry about them gets reset back to 15 years or so. Here's a thread from almost 2 years ago that discusses the testing difficulty. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...iscussion.html . Maybe it's best to just change them and be done.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 17044287

Do the Mark II engines have a similar safety feature for the injectors?

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 17046269

I have no idea but I do know that those clips are more than just assembly aid. They are found on pretty much every other engines ever made with similar injectors.

POST 30Original post

going back to the OP issue, is it normal for a cold engine to run rich temporarily at startup? if so, how do you assess for abnormal smell/exhaust?

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 17046865

Those spring clips provide about as much safety as the spring clips on axles, one good yank removes them.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 17048207

Yeah I was taught that a cold engine deliberately feeds unburnt fuel to the catalytic converters along with air from the Secondary Air Injector to warm them up faster as an emissions thing. (Happens in all modern gasoline engines.) If you're still smelling fuel from the exhaust after it's warmed up and driven a good distance, let's call it 15 miles, then I think it's fair to say you are running rich in general.

POST 33Original post

Hi Tipper, Did replacing the injectors solve the smelly exhaust problem?

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 17048456

Yes but when the rail bolts get loose the fuel pressure won't push them out of the rail.

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 17048963

Ok,makes sense, yes. How do you objectively assess/test for leaking injectors?

POST 36Original post

@c didy , I'm not aware of any methods beyond checking flow rate with PIWIS / Durametric, or taking them out of the car and sending them to a place that tests and repairs injectors.

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 17049697

After a long period of sitting (couple of hours or more) extended cranking time before the engine fires up or when the engine starts but takes a few seconds for a cylinder or two to come alive is a good indication of a slightly leaking injector. Also, the oil can smell like gas too.
