Personally, I don't think it matters that much as long as it's a good quality synthetic and changed frequently.
Leading evidence: 'Replace frequently' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check statement below over' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Its mentioned in the Rennvision bore scoring videos that the recommended oil has changed from 20 years ago.

The reason I run the Gibbs stuff is that it seems to be well regarded in the community, and some day long from now my car will be be for sale.

I ran Mobil1 0-40 for 3 years before switching to Motul 8100 X-cess for the last year.

BUT, if you want THE BEST choice for our 996 engines, then go with DT-40 and an OCI of 4K miles, or one year (no track days), change filter each time."
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I run the DT-40 from Joe Gibbs in my M96 engine.
As you may have gathered from the few brief responses, everyone has a favorite. Personally, I don't think it matters that much as long as it's a good quality synthetic and changed frequently. The reason I run the Gibbs stuff is that it seems to be well regarded in the community, and some day long from now my car will be be for sale. I will have a stack of receipts to go with it and they won't be from Walmart.
Same for me - but I just wanted to say that in regards to all the "I like this the best", there is science behind all this. You can check my statement below over on bobistheoilguy.com. It's a forum of chemical engineers that discuss the ingredients of each oil. I've been on that forum for over 16 years, and here's my "elevator speech" to sum it all up...
"Today's oils are all eons ahead of what was produced even ten years ago, so choosing any decent synthetic won't be a bad choice. BUT, if you want THE BEST choice for our 996 engines, then go with DT-40 and an OCI of 4K miles, or one year (no track days), change filter each time."

Hmmm...what do I need to learn to read? This is what you asked. You popped in here on one thread and asked the most loaded and debated hot button issue on this entire forum, for that matter, on most car forums. First, read your owners manual. Second, use the forum search function. There are thousands of posts on this subject.
These questions pop up often enough that a simple reply would be:
"This is common and much debated question, you're best off by reading your owner's manual. Second, a search here on the forum will reveal a great deal of information on the subject".
Instead, we see the same tired, snarky, even rude replies - RTFM, Canola oil, Coconut oil (do people actually think this is still funny, it may have been the first few times 10 or 15 years ago).
So maybe the guy has a low post count. So the question has come up a thousand times before - guess what, it's going to keep coming up in the future. When a friend or stranger asks you face to face about the type of oil you use in your Porsche do you reply "Read the F**king manual"? I'll bet not. Let's keep this forum civil.
Its a legitimate question.
And as a new owner of a 996 myself, I understand why he asked.
Its mentioned in the Rennvision bore scoring videos that the recommended oil has changed from 20 years ago.
But I cant remember if a definitive answer was given.
Your local Porsche Service Center will tell you the latest factory recommended fill and what they are currently using when they perform oil change service.
Call them up.
I'm all for civility. Could use a little more in our society these days, but I'm also empathic to Joe's comments too. The OP asks what oil is recommended for the Porsche C4S 996. This is something most car owners know how to find out instead of posting to a public forum. Yes, it's called an owners manual! And, it's really hard to ignore the large Mobil1 sticker under the deck lid. Joe, being an active participant here on the Rennlist (and others) for more than a decade has seen this question probably hundreds of times over the years. Joe's response was more sardonic than intended to be hurtful to the OP. BUT.... the OP responded with "
You need to learn how to read."
Now that's an ironic statement, isn't it? He tells Joe he needs to "LEARN" how to read!
Basically, saying Joe is illiterate when
he's
the actual person that didn't "read" the owner's manual.
It's like going to a well-established restaurant in your town that has made it clear over the years they "don't accept personal checks". They post a big sign on the front door and at the register. "
NO PERSONAL CHECKS
!!!" The person ignores the signs, goes into the restaurant, orders a meal, eats, and then proceeds to the check-out counter and asks, "Who do I make the check out to?"
My future advice for the OP, don't put diesel fuel in your car!
Recommended: Porsche Classic Engine Oil 5W-50. Sold by Porsche and made specifically for our cars.
Here is what I use:
New spin on oil filter and 3,000 mile oil changes.
I used to use Mobil 1 0W-40 but with the age of my car I thought it best to go to a 5W
My car/engine has 146,675 miles on it and it is 21 years old.
Is this more helpful?
OP - Related question from your first post, but a bit off topic. Your RL has been active since 2002, so you should know better than to troll, even unintentionally. For background, did you get this car on a no-notice whim? Do you know what a PPI is? What did previous owners use for oil. What research did you do before purchase of this vehicle? When you write ‘recommended’, what do you consider a trusted source for said preferred lubricant? If you would have provided some specifics about vehicle mileage and other pertinent fill-in information, responses would’ve been more seriously provided.
And 99% of those dont actually pay cash. They just transferred a set of numbers electronically. Try getting actual real cash to pay for a major purchase sometime.
I ran Mobil1 0-40 for 3 years before switching to Motul 8100 X-cess for the last year. My Porsche Indy uses Motul, as do many other experts, and its known to be a good oil. I used to want the 0W cold rating for my daily 996 and started at -10F more than once in the winter. My new garage is kept at 55F, so the 5w cold is way more than I need.
My 996 has only 66k miles, and I have great oil pressure 5 bar even when hot, so I dont need the 50w summer rating for quite some time.
One of my associates will only allow me to pay in cash. I say to him, why can't I just transfer you money instead? The Feds can track that easier he says. Really weird request from a dude selling copious amounts of talcum powder.
