Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi: Wondering if any of you have removed the exhaust tips on a 1999 996? I haven't slid under the car to look how, exactly they are attached but have read that they are held on by a bolt? I would like to polish them in addition to some other cosmetic improvements while I wait for the hideous Rochester NY weather to improve! Thanks, Bob

POST 2Original post

Yes, there's a single bolt that connects each tip to its muffler. Use plenty of PB Blaster.

POST 3Original post

I removed both o mine this weekend - the bolts were so seized they ended up both shearing off and I had to cut the clamps off. Be prepared to order new ones - Pelican seems to have the best prices.

Growing up in the Midwest, I understand your pain on working with rusty bolts. I gotta say living in Cali is great for wrenching on your own vehicles. I did my exhaust tips about a month ago and zero rust, not bad after 74k miles and 15 yr old car...

POST 5Original post

Waiting on new tips i just ordered i went out and tried the bolts and as suspected they wouldn't move an inch. Before i try again with more strength and just to make sure, are they to be loosened pushing clockwise or anticlockwise....?

POST 6Original post

Anti-clockwise. I'd probably order new clamps before you remove the tips; mine were pretty flimsy as well as being seized.

POST 8Original post

Pilot - would you please provide a link to the clamps you ordered from Pelican?

This DIY should help... see photos in the attached link http://p-car.com/diy/exhaust/muffler.htm

POST 11Original post

Thanks CoPilot, but are you sure these are the ones on the tips? Those you linked to look like the ones attaching the exhaust pipe "tube" to the rest of the exhaust system. Are these the ones that rusts? I on the other hand seem to have trouble to remove the bolt at the very end of the tips, see pic on link below: https://www.ramspeedautomotive.com.a...tomotive-4.jpg

POST 12Original post

I double checked the link and those are the v-clamps that attach the mufflers to the exhaust tips. There's another support bracket you may be thinking about : http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...%20mm%29%2C%20

POST 13Original post

hmm, no. Im thinking of the bolt at the very end of the tip. If you look at the picture in the link i provided there is a "hole" under the tip itself. In that hole there is a bolt holding the tip to the exhaust pipe. Im thinking that has to be removed in order to put on the new tip? https://www.ramspeedautomotive.com.a...tomotive-4.jpg Sorry if im confusing you and thanks for your help

POST 14Original post

FWIW I had to cut mine off. Almost no rust under my car, but those clamps..... no amount of PB Blaster would help.

POST 15Original post

photo below (NOT MINE) shows how the tip is screwed to the elbow P.S. I bought quad tips which were 1-piece (tip welded to elbow) so I had to UNCLAMP the elbow (ends that are FLARED)

POST 16Original post

Folks OP (and high jacker KANT) is looking at the (adjusting?)screw that holds the shiny part to the elbow. I used that screw, it is into a slot, when one of my tips extended too far beyond the bumper. If you take that screw out I'm not sure that you can slide the outer cover all of the way off? I had a hard time moving it ~3/4" to adjust it.

That's a great price as compared to the others ones. It does not mention it will fit a 996 c2. I am assuming you know they fit for sure?
