Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How far does the rubber part of the mount protrude below the metal casing on a New/Good mount ? It looks like from photo's I've seen it should be about 1/4" ? Thx in advance

POST 2Original post

I just changed my motor mounts last Thursday and a 1/4" protrusion seems about right. I did check the height difference between the old and new and it was only about 1/8.

POST 3Original post

For new OEM mounts, the rubber portion protrudes appx 3/8" below the aluminum mount body. That's with the mounts out of the car; they will sag from the engine weight once installed.

POST 4Original post

I just did mine on Saturday. I did not measure but as you can see old vs. new is fairly significant. The old had 57K on them. I started to notice a slight vibration from 3500 - 5000 rpms (if I remember correctly). Made a HUGE differnce all around. Idle is smooth, no slop in the back in, and no vibrations.

Yeah, that photo is perfect - Thanks. This is pretty much what I was thinking. I actually looked at mine the other day (from under the car with the weight of the engine hanging on them) and they looked about like yours with the 57,000 on them. I don't get any vibrations but I do notice a slight "water in a bucket" type of feeling from the rear end if I take a tight turn with some speed. It doesn't last for long (like the tail wanting to slide), it's more of a quick "slosh" (hence the water/bucket analogy) and pretty subtle. I'm wondering if maybe it's time to do the engine mounts...

POST 7Original post

water in a bucket is the perfect analogy. I was feeling the same. Car is good and tight now. definately change them you will not be sorry. Super easy to do. Took about 1.5 hours but was taking my time cleaning and inspecting along the way. when you are supporting the engine keep jacking it up until you see the exhaust tips actually start to raise towards the bumper to enure the load is off the old mounts prior to removing the nut. Good luck!!

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^Great^ Thanks for the input ! It looks like I've got another project

POST 9Original post

After at least 10 years, anyone with over 40K should do this simple, inexpensive update. I noticed a big difference immediately, even my wife noticed it when she drove the car.

POST 10Original post

This is how mine looked at 90k miles, the rubber was completely detatched and could be twisted about 45 degrees. I also noticed a huge difference when I replaced them.

Wow! That's really really really bad. It's a good thing your engine did not drop out of the chassis, and I'm not even joking. When the rubber tears apart like that, there's a lot of stress placed on the mount and engine carrier and hardware, and invariably, the other one will fail shortly thereafter. It's good you replaced them before something more catastrophic happened. For an easy and effective way to tell if your mounts are excessively worn out, take a look at your exhaust tips. They should sit nice and snug against the bottom of the rear bumper cutouts. If they're sagging too far away below the bumper, chances are your engine mounts need replacing.

POST 13Original post

Yeah I kind of knew the mounts were bad, that's the right side mount and the right exhaust tip was about an inch lower than the left. The left mount seemed to be in good condition but both were replaced to be sure.
