Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It should not have fallen out. Go to your local dealer and buy a new canister. It will come with a new bypass valve installed.
or buy a spin on filter adapter from LN and a Napa 1042 filter.
They dont like me. If youll take note they respond within a few moments and rather rudely tell people the search button is your friend.
Well I for one like to communicate. Every time I search for a simple problem I have several of the same guys who act like jerks.
Id really like to put this back together and move on with my day.
An someone with some decency please tell me how to put this all back together?
Then I have some really good news
Its kinda hard to search for something when he doesnt know what the name of it is...
Thats the oil filter bypass. You really dont want to replace the filter without it. Its there in case the oil filter becomes clogged, it will open up and let unfiltered oil into the engine. If its missing, unfiltered oil will always get past, leaving your engine unprotected.
I think you can re-use it. Every oil change requires an inspection to make sure its there when the new filter gets reinstalled.
I'm a huge proponent of the spin on adaptor personally (no affiliation). The zero by pass feature is a must have on these engines in my personal opinion. Saved mine. PorscheTech3 did post a way to disable the stock bypass a while back. This would be the only way I'd use the stock one.

With quarterly (special, high end and top secrete oil formula) changes in my very precious 996 I dont worry about no stinking by pass valve business.
Humor.
Fair question. Search is my friend posts usually reserved for cocktail hour or two or three hours after cocktail hour started.
When I found mine loose in the filter canister as a newby a few years back I think I found the info by searching here. Found the info I needed, reassembled, reinstalled and ordered spin=on adapter for next oil change. Problem eliminated.
He refuses to search, prefering to start a new thread so that we can regurgitate directly to him, & and further clutter up the forum with redundant info.
The search function at this site sucks.
How about something like this?

OP indicated he changed his oil and then found something. Wouldn't it make sense to retrace the steps and figure out where that mystery piece came from?
We all started somewhere. Paying attention to what you are doing should be one of the first things to learn.
