Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The (ball joints in the) coffin arms are probably a good place to start - they usually squeak badly before they rattle though.

Suggestion
She's really thorough and seems pretty smart, but a perfectly clean fuzzy pink fleece jacket?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ok so i have 1999 C2 with 125k miles on it. runs excellent. here is what i have done, (new bilstein shocks, drop links, tie rod ends) i am running Michelin pilot sports that are new. i drove a friends 996 with half the mileage and realized how much tighter everything felt. i have my mechanic look ever everything that he said (tie rods, drop links and new shocks were what was needed) it deff helped but i am still wondering where else i should be looking when it comes to making this car feel tighter. i just just feel when i am hitting bumps or driving higher speeds it just feels still a bit sloppy compared to my friends car with less miles but same year. thanks in advanced
There's lots of contact points in these suspension systems. I found on mine, one of the biggest differences was changing out the top mount on the front struts for a Tarett monoball setup. Didn't add any noise or vibration, but really tightened up the steering. Coffin arms are also famous for getting loose, as are the diagonal arms, front and rear. In the rear you also have 4 upper control arms, and the rear toe arm (again, I switched to Tarett version and can strongly endorse this)
Two things come to mind that really tightened up my car (131K miles) were new lower control arm bushings. If you have access to a press its a lot cheaper to just do the bushings. If you don't the lower control arm unbolts as a unit. Also I just did the 4 "tuning forks" or control arm links which tightened everything up nicely. There are a lot of links and connections under there - and they all get old.
I have a rattle when riding on
coarse
pavement and it drives me nuts. Steering feels tight and big bumps don't seem to replicate the issue.
I just installed coil overs and top mounts and it still rattles on course pavement. All parts look to be in good shape but I'm changing the coffin arms next as I don't see that they've been done in my service history going back to 08.
Any thoughts?
1st - I hate to be an "English teacher", but, it's "coarse pavement" (not - course pavement) - sounds the same but totally different meaning
If the top mounts are "camber plates" with mono-ball cartridges it's possible they rattle - even if new. As for the other parts, looks can be deceiving - it's difficult to diagnose when not under actual driving conditions. The (ball joints in the) coffin arms are probably a good place to start - they usually squeak badly before they rattle though. Good Luck
I appreciate the corrections. Growing up in Hawaii we spoke "Pidgeon English" and I spent more time cutting class and going surfing in my younger years, lol. I rarely proof what I write (bad habit) especially when I just wake up and jump on the forum while having my first cup of coffee.
Thanks and be patient with my errors...! To and too used to always mess me up in school (I thought they just equaled 4) HaHa.
Back on topic, I do notice what I'd call a creak vs squeak when load changes.
The rattle was there before with stock set up. No mono ball on the new ones camber plates.
Creak - is correct. Does it do it when standing still and turning the front wheels? Look it up on youtube - there are some good videos of the noise they make. FWIW, I got the coffin arms with the replaceable ball joints from VERTEX (EPS) - I've had them for at least three years - they're still doing well.
Nothing while still. Steering has always felt tight and precise while driving at any (legal) speed. It's just noticeable on coarse pavement. I did notice some weeping on my rack though. Could there be a rattle issue
there? I would think not.
^^^ That's what I'm talkin' about ^^^ I can't watch her video's though... just too weird for me. She's really thorough and seems pretty smart, but a perfectly clean fuzzy pink fleece jacket? Really? There's not even a spot of grease on her... C'mon ! You gottabekiddinme!!!
Think of it this way... if the joint or bushing can not freely rotate when tight then it has to be tightened at static ride height. This includes the bonded rubber bushings in our links. Things like ball joints, tie rod ends, heim joints and spherical ***** can be tightened in any position.
The bonded rubber will rip out if tightened unloaded because its "twisted" all the time at ride height.
Have you checked tire pressure? What condition are the motor mounts in? If they haven't been replaced in a while a new set will tighten up that swaying feeling in the rear.
