I cant remember my alignment settings at the moment, but I am running continental DWS06 and I have the 3.6L.
Leading evidence: 'Run continental dws06 and i have the 3.6l' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Suggestion
I can get my '99 C2's rear end loose quite easily and predictably running my favorite cloverleaf.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Always love and admire watching pcars drift thru corners having never experiencing it myself. Never even driven a rwd pcar, just my C4s, and the awd along with psm makes drifting a non thought.
Went on my normal weekend morning drive today, hit a little black ice on a twisty and felt the rear end coming around. Luckily wasn't pushing it too hard at that moment and only rotated about 45 degrees before gaining control. That will get your heart pumping. Think Ill stick with awd and just not go driving when its only upper 30s.
Nice! I couldnt get the back end of my C2 loose ever on a public road (no PSM). That thing stuck like glue. Havent been able to get My C4 to slide yet either. PSM kills the power before itll get loose. Ive started turning it off in spirited drives now.
I've got a 67.5 Datsun 2000 Roadster. Rear wheel drive, limited slip diff. It puts out about 180 HP and weighs only 1900 lbs. I can get that car to drift at will. Fairly predictable as well. Not as easy in the Targa.

My 99 C2s rear end will not come out on any conditions with throttle and/or turning, even full power hard left or right turns. I dont have PSM, and I can turn off TC (traction control), and it still doesnt.
However, on the track, with high threshold braking, its a different story. While trail-braking this car, the front end will quickly turn in, and the brakes are so powerful, the rear end gets very light, even on straights. In that case, with my neutral/street alignment settings, oversteer is easy to attain.
IMO we should be thankful that our 911s have developed over the years and the engine has been pushed forward from our aircooled brothers.
Have been on drives with friends where they have spun thier pre 996 911s in reasonable conditions and thankfully have remained unscathed! That is not fun!
Also have hit a small patch of black ice before - that's even scarier luckily also unscathed but could have gone very bad very quickly
Best snow car I ever owned was a 69 911. It was like a bug,, just kept going till the snow lifted the front end up..
I actually bought it from a German guy out Idaho who used it for his foul weather car in Sun valley.
The 69's were the first long chassis,, and still had the 2.0, so the quick power was way up high,,
But had decent torque at 2K, so it didn't want to snap loose unless you really flogged it.
Also ran a square tire setup on it.. Had 15x8' fuchs on all 4 corners.
Weigh dist was 55/45 on the scales with me in the driver seat.
I can get my '99 C2's rear end loose quite easily and predictably running my favorite cloverleaf. Using only steering and gas, I can manage a few degrees of drift, unless I'm really pushing it, which can get exciting. I've never driven an air-cooled hard, so some might say I really don't know what driving a Porsche is like. ;-)
Take the PCA Driver's Education, when they get you on the skid pad you will find it is no problem to break the rear end loose and steer with you right foot
I spun out on an autocross course once. It was at the beach and there was a dusting of sand on the pavement. It was kinda fun (in a controlled environment). I wasn't the only one - I remember a Lotus doing a 360.
Only time I have spun a 996 is:
- Wet and bad tires (very very easy)
- Lifting the throttle during fast long turns (big newbie no no)
All of this was ofcourse at a track. Can't believe how people loose control of their 911s on a public road. They must either have bad tires or drive insanely fast????????
Controlled drift and loss of control are not the same thing. Breaking the rear end loose while still being very much in control is not hard, in my experience, and can be accomplished at fairly modest speeds, well less than 50mph, on the right radius+camber combo. I never do so when there are trees, poles, or other very solid objects on the outside of the turn.
Wait really? I've kicked the tail out on my car all the time! (C4 with PSM) its hard to tame but once you do its a blast to do. Just be careful and aware of where you are when you do it.
Hah i did that once two, it was also at an autocross, probably at the same beach! i somehow managed to spin through the cones, I managed to avoid hitting them though. Good times.
I cant remember my alignment settings at the moment, but I am running continental DWS06 and I have the 3.6L. the tires are great for my case (I got them while I was in High School, and I was at the goodwill of my parents to afford my tires). Also I am doing them deliberately, WOT and making a 90* turn. Also, PSM cuts it short before anything too crazy can happen.
