Suspected cause
The best intake for performance is probably the 997 3.8 box, but it doesn’t look nearly as nice as the Fabspeed.

Suggestion
Besides if you go to an oiled filter you run a risk of polluting the MAF and causing CELs.

Suggestion
The oil in the MAF is way more of an issue when you do stuff like use a cone filter that's straight on the MAF,, a foot or two

Suggestion
If your using a fabric air filter,, following the cleaning and oiling instructions from the manufacturer is the only way to go.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, I have a 2003 911 ( 996) and I was wondering how much more power can I add with an after market air intake? and which is the best after market Air Intake..
Most , such as the k&n dont add any hp , they can even lose hp.
There arent really any significant gains to be made with bolt ons with the m96 , head work , cams & displacement gains would need to be in place before the motor can significantly benefit for increase intake & exhaust flow
When we put a 997S engine in my car we tried my original cold air kit (I will leave the vendor anonymous) and then the stock intake/filter. The Air temperature entering the throttle body was 20F higher with the cold air kit then stock. We also got more HP with stock intake.
Agree with these posts. The stock airbox and filter are huge and AIT (air intakes temps) are already good with the stock location.
You might find lower AIT with the rear spoiler raised.
People who as if something is "worth it" on the internet make zero sense to me. Value is subjective. Only you can decide if something is "worth it" I do know that the search function is "worth it"
I always thought it was funny that folks would think that the small aftermarket intake companies, could design a significantly better intake than the company that designs them for just about everybody.. (Porsche doesn't make all of their money on their cars.)
I think you don't understand why some aftermarket companies can make better parts because you're assuming car companies only design parts based on performance. That's not the case at all.
There are so many more things they have to consider or are limited by. Things like cost to manufacture and federal regulations are two major hurdles. Also, parts like OEM intakes aren't always designed for higher RPM performance. Just like suspensions, they are designed with mid-power range in mind to satisfy the average consumer.
However, the idea that all aftermarket parts increase performance of most engines has muddied the waters. People now tend to think all engines respond well to aftermarket parts. Honda engines helped perpetuate that idea since so many of their engines are designed so well. An average engine like the M96 doesnt necessarily respond as well.
PCA Spotlight: We break, fix a Porsche 996 Carrera on way to more power with IPD intake plenum
I have no firsthand knowledge on this topic but PCA recently posted a video on YouTube with the above title. Might be worth watching since its on topic.
I agree, no way the open air filters do a better job vs. stock. However, I do like smoothing out the intake elbow with an aftermarket one for purely sound improvement. I don't think it helps or hurts either way for performance, but certainly gives the engine a more complete engine note.
I had the EVOMS Intake in my car for 10+ Years but now i have reverted back to Stock Box with BMC Filter
You lose the Deep Sound and Light Drone but i find the throttle response better
I always wanted to try the FABSPEED Intake only because of the look but im sure it sucks in Hot Air...
I have one of these on my car (in black) and like it:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996...8AAOSwc95dC9ML
It of course adds zero hp, but increases intake noise which is welcome. Plus, it's a cinch to go back to stock.
I have a fabspeed intake. Does it sound awesome. Yes, yes it does. Does it add power........according to fabspeed, yes. My butt dyno says, meh........reality......i doubt any power differences. If it does add or subtract any power it is so minimal you won't notice.
I have full Fabspeed intake and exhaust.
All together it doesn’t add a bunch, and alone the Fabspeed intake wouldn’t add any HP.
But the sound is awesome and the looks are even better.
The best intake for performance is probably the 997 3.8 box, but it doesn’t look nearly as nice as the Fabspeed.
If you’re chasing HP in a NA Porsche, the best way to add HP is send it to Flat6Innovations for a rebuild.
Modify the exhaust for sound, add an intake for looks, but you’re just not going to add much HP...and may end up with less depending upon what you choose.
I like Fabspeed, but one piece is just not enough.
It takes the entire package to get big results.
Since we are on the topic, would the GruppeM ram intake do any harm? it looks like its getting air straight from the hole rather than sitting in the engine bay? not expecting HP gain but
The GruppeM intake is one I would really be interested in seeing some actual numbers on. It looks like the stock one but bigger. Doesn't mean it will do anything but I would be curious.
If you would like a faster car, go to driving school. In other words, its not worth adding any power unless you are able to fully utilize the existing power.
Yeah looks like there would be little difference. Although I have wondered, if someone cut another intake hole (like there is on the left side) on the right side of the lid and added another vent that leads to the air box, if it would lead to any gain in power.
This topic has been kicked around for so long it's black and blue.
Engines love cold/cooler air, it's puzzling to see replacement air intakes sitting open in the engine bay, you're sucking in hot air.
Modern intake systems have cold air runners feeding outside air, if the after market replacement doesn't keep cold air runners, it won't help.
Someone else said, gains come from overall pumping efficiency, open one end but not the other may not give you anything worthwhile.
Anyone can claim HP gains, are they real?
Unless you can get the air out the other end (exhaust) your not doing anything, without Tuning, more air means you need more fuel...It's a slippery slope.
so essentially, for that idea to do much the car would need significant tuning coupled with a plenum and TB and exhaust work to do much, even with that gains would be quite costly
my understanding from previous reads on this same topic is "Porsche did this one right (airbox setup) so don't screw with it". Even my indy wants me to increase HP but by doing plenum work and then full exhaust. I went back from after market air box setup to stock and now I don't get CEL codes in over a year. I got it every other month with the aftermarket. (as a side note, Bill bought it from me and I have not heard him have a code since he put it on???? go figure that one.....)
Correct (except when I forgot to plug the sensor in
) Thanks Nick
Love the roar and it feels like it breaths better from the moment I drove off.
I think most people over oil them and have issues fouling MAF sensors.
I'll be doing an UOA soon, then switch back to stock for 6 months and another UOA.
If your using a fabric air filter,, following the cleaning and oiling instructions from the manufacturer is the only way to go.
ITG/Foam same same.. Use their oil and cleaner ,, bad things can happen if you don't.. BTDT many times on track cars.
The oil in the MAF is way more of an issue when you do stuff like use a cone filter that's straight on the MAF,, a foot or two
of tubing between the MAF and the filter is a good idea. Its also critical to getting the full filtering benefits..
Greasing the rubber seal around any drop in filter helps keep the seal tight as well.
Ask if the UOA company can give you the size of the Silica content,, its as important as if there is any there..
a 1PPM 50micron level is way worse than a 1PPM 2micron level.. I cant recall the limits in a engine bore but its
surprising how big of stuff an engine can actually digest ,,, but its basically grinding compound... at some point.
Since we are on the topic the 997.1 intake setup fits our cars doesn't it? I understand its purely cosmetic but it does look a lot better than the plastics that come in the 996.
I don't even remember where got it...
I think it was a close-out and I got the Oil filler cap and the Power Steering Pump cap for @ $60 (I think...) - From what I remember I wound up getting the PS Pump cap basically for free when I bought them both (as opposed to buying them separately at their regular price). If I come across the invoice I'll let you know...
