I checked the LTFT and STFT and both checked out normal, However, I am not sure if I did that when the car was in drive.I will check that tomorrow.

Suggestion
Check thoroughly for vacuum leaks, its very normal for a car to idle hunt with a bit of load and not when its running free..
Disconnect battery and joining the two leads together

I have tried to reset the system by disconnecting the battery and joining the two leads together.

I would recommend reaching out to Tiptronic owners and maybe talking to some shops that specialize in them (be prepared for the hard sell when dealing with shops though

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello All.
I am very new to this forum so If I am doing something wrong. Please forgive me.
I recently bought a 2001, 996 Automatic..It is a bit of a project car and I already have done a number of things to get it to where I want it.
I have looked through threads on idling problems but my case seems to be a little different.
So, When the car is in Drive and stopped the idle surges, Fluctuates. This does not happen in Park or Neutral. I have a basic OBD11 reader and looking at the numbers for the short term and long term fuel mixtures, everything checks out fine so I am dismissing the MAF, Vacuum leak and bad injectors etc.
If anybody can point me in the right direction that would be very helpful.
Thanks so much,
Colin.
Seeing as it doesn't do it in park or neutral I think it's fair to assume it's transmission related. This is not to say it can't be vacuum related though... Sorry, I don't have a tip, so I know nothing about them. I would recommend reaching out to Tiptronic owners and maybe talking to some shops that specialize in them (be prepared for the hard sell when dealing with shops though
). Good luck
Since it is new to you and your driving might be a bit different from the previous owner, you might have to reset the transmission adaptations. Don't ask me how to do that because I don't know. I just know that a tiptronic transmission has adaptations depending on driving style.
Thanks DB.
I have tried to reset the system by disconnecting the battery and joining the two leads together.
I did not know about the learning it need for the shifting. Since I have driven it, I think I will have to reset again and go through those steps.

You have checked the AOS vacuum level?

Hi PDX,
I have not checked that. I will have to research on how to do that. I am up for any and all suggestions as this has me stumped.
Thanks for the Suggestion.
There was a guy with a Mk1 on another forum that was experiencing the same thing. When he come to a stop, the car would stall. He'd restart and keep it rev'd up until he arrived at his destination.
Ended up being a faulty fuel pump and pressure regulator. Replaced both parts and car is running smoothly again.
Thanks NP,
Do you think that if either or both of those were faulty that it would also show those signs in Park or Neutral? It idles and revs fine in both of those.
As soon as you put the car in gear, the computer see's this load and adjusts the fuel trims. If the pump is not responding accordingly you could get a "stumble"... I wouldn't say this is your problem for sure, but it certainly seems plausible...A good troubleshooter should be able to track it down.
I checked the LTFT and STFT and both checked out normal, However, I am not sure if I did that when the car was in drive.I will check that tomorrow.
Thanks, Something else to look at. Good advise
