1) Try to adjust the jacks and wiggle some more to see if there is still a slight bit of angular misalignment.

2) If the transmission should really just slide together all the way to the flange, then I should drop transmission, check alignment with clutch tool and try again.

Just finished doing the IMS, RMS and replacing my clutch on a 2005 997 (yea, it's a 997, but a very early one and few people have dropped the transmission on a 997 so far.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ug, just noticed after posting that the title may imply the alignment tool was a 'used' part. To clarify, it wasn't a used part...although it's plastic. It simply meant that I used a clutch alignment tool. Just finished doing the IMS, RMS and replacing my clutch on a 2005 997 (yea, it's a 997, but a very early one and few people have dropped the transmission on a 997 so far. Hence why I'm posting to a 996 board). When installing the clutch, I used a clutch alignment tool (from Pelican) and made sure it was easy to remove after torquing the pressure plate bolts to spec. So, I think the clutch and the pilot bearing should be aligned. Reinstalled the transmission today. I used a transmission jack on the transmission and a jack on the motor to help align things. Based on reading I've done, it seems that once everything is aligned, the trans just slips onto the motor. That never really happened for me. It took awhile just to get from unattached to the final 1/4". At that point, I can now get bolts to thread into holes. However, it still hasn't just 'slipped together'. I've thought about playing with jack alignment for awhile to see if I can wiggle it in the pilot bearing. But, based on my understanding, it should just slip together. If it doesn't, the pilot bearing is misaligned. Has anyone used the 996 alignment tool and found that it still didn't get perfect alignment? I guess I've spent maybe 10 minutes at this point trying to get that last 1/4". That seems excessive wiggling for something should should slip together. I guess my options are to: 1) Try to adjust the jacks and wiggle some more to see if there is still a slight bit of angular misalignment. 2) If the transmission should really just slide together all the way to the flange, then I should drop transmission, check alignment with clutch tool and try again. Given that the alignment tool maybe didn't do the job right the first time, it's not certain that it'll get it the next time either.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I went back and tried to wiggle the transmission the rest of the way on. I moved the transmission all the way up until the bolts I had in the holes bound into place (at which point I knew the rear was way too high). I also went all the way back down until the bolts bound on the downside. I adjusted the jack by about 1/4 turn and wiggled each time. Couldn't get it to budge. I decided to inspect the clutch centering tool before I yanked the transmission. Remember, it's plastic. When I looked at it closely, I noticed the tip end wasn't straight. It was slightly bent. Uhoh. Well, certainly the clutch wasn't centered with that piece of poop plastic tool. So, I yanked the transmission. I pulled the pressure plate and this time centered it by eye. I carefully bolted it and then checked the centering. I took my centering tool and checked to see if it would fit. It would only fit if I rotated it a certain direction. Otherwise, it wouldn't fit. I put the transmission back under the car and raised it into place. A bit of work later and I was back to the 1/2-1/4" gap. This time, as I wiggled it up and down and pushed, it slowly worked into place. I managed to get the flanged to mate within 1mm in about 10 minutes of jack adjusting and wiggling. So, I ended up being able to carefully center by eye better than that piece of poop clutch alignment tool. The moral of the story for anyone who stumbles across this thread is don't trust those plastic alignment tools, even if they are for a Porsche.

POST 3Original post

Well done. I've used a deep socket and extension and lots od electrical tape to make a clutch alignment tool. Also done many using my finger to align the disk that seems to work too. The socket and tape works the best if you don't have a tool made for the clutch you are working in.
