Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone. I just converted from Corvette to Porsche. New to Rennlist. Need Muuuuuuch help. I just bought a 2001 911 Carrera 4. Beautiful (except maybe the wheels). 1. What is the difference between a 'narrow body' and a 'wide body'? Which is mine? 2. Will the 10 spoke 18" wheels fit? Fronts 18x7.5 w/50mm offset. Rear 18x10 with 65mm offset. Probably more questions to come. Thanks in advance for your help. Lang

POST 2Original post

Your C4 is a narrow body. The wide-body's hips (like those on a C4S) are slighty wider, resulting in an incrementally wider wheelbase (something on the order of an inch, I believe). If you didn't buy a car in look-at-me yellow or red, you won't miss the widebody. Imagine fender flares and half-inch spacers on the rear end of a Corvette, and you have a widebody. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but for all cars except the turbos that probably NEED the additional wheelbase, the widebody stance is primarily cosmetic (hence the term "Turbo- look "). I have 19" wheels stuffed into the wells on my '99 C4, but I cannot confirm your offset. Note that you will need to decrease sidewall height as you increase wheel size to maintain the accuracy of the speedo - I have not found a user-adjustable setting to correct for tire diameter like you can on a Corvette with a Hypertech programmer. Once you get into 19" wheels, this really reduces ride comfort. But looks sweet. One of the benefits of the C4 is that the tub/chassis is stiffer than the Carrera2, which is good for driving and also helps reduce squeaks and rattles due to flex. Depending on which Corvette you migrated from, this will be a very nice upgrade - even with the targa panel in on my '96 Corvette, rigidity sucks. Let's see some pics!

Welcome Lang, post up some pics. Congratulations

POST 6Original post

Welcome aboard. I left Porsche and came back to a 2002 996 C4 Cab from a 2005 C6 Corvette. Love the PCar, not to say I didn't enjoy the Corvette but just VERY different driving dynamics. The Corvette as you know was great straight line and from a dead start where the PCar is made for curves. Corvettes spin tires - C4's not suppose to spin tires. Corvette - reasonably cheap to work on. PCar - not so much. Enjoy the car and do post some pictures. On this forum if there are no pictures it didn't happen......

Congrats , I Have the same model and year car , love it. What color is yours ?

POST 10Original post

Congrats and welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy your new C4. As a wide-body C4S owner, I'll agree with the comments about the wide body being for looks. It looks fantastic! Many people (including me) believe that the C4S is the best looking variant of the 996 that was ever produced.

Please allow me to add my welcome. I got my first 2002 C4 Cab in April of this year, never having owned one before. Came out of a 2001 C5 Corvette, had been a Vette guy for 20 years, both C4's and the C5. As Dstutler stated, two totally different driving experiences. His other insights are also spot on. You will love your new Porsche. On a lighter note, this forum is a great source of information with a very civilized approach. The Corvette Forum was great for entertainment, name calling, personal attacks, and crazy flaming rants. God, I miss those guys.

Reminds me of back in late 2001 early 2002 when I was shopping a replacement for my Camaro and before I had decided on the Boxster when I visited one Corvette forum and made the faux pas of asking about what discounts there might be for a new Corvette. Geesh, you thought I had something bad about every forum member's mother.

POST 13Original post

Been searching wheels myself. Those are the correct wheels for the car. The stock wheels for the 1999's (all narrow bodies) are 7.5 or 8 inch up front and 9 or 10 inch wide in the rears. And only 17 or 18 inch. There were no factory 19's and no 11 inch wide rears from the factor either.

Welcome! If your current wheels are 18", they look like the 18" Turbo Look Wheels: Front: 7.5J x 18 - ET50 (p/n 993.362.134.06) Rear: 10J x 18 - ET65 (p/n 993.362.140.04) Bolt pattern: 5x130mm FYI, I had the same wheels, and sold them on e-bay for $750 last month. Picked up some used Carerra II 5-spoke wheels for $825.

POST 15Original post

this is the wide body C4S... I believe the diferences are 1.8 inches wider, bigger brakes and different suspension components. Im not 100 percent sure what is different in the suspension, but I do know that all brake and suspension bits on my car are interchangable with a like year turbo.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone. I'll post some more pics when the weather clears enough to get some sun on it. My Vette was a 75 C3 that I have owned since '81. Highly modified. Lang

@Dennis, "What you talkin bout Willis?" The C4S is the best looking 996 ever, even over the Turbo with it's god awful looking side scoops and non reflective rear, lol. I Love my C4S. Cheers
