All the schematics that i've checked only show one coolant sensor.
Leading evidence: 'Check only show one coolant sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check only show one coolant sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, i've got a few technical questions about my engine wiring harness. I'm swapping in a non-porsche motor and keeping a partial porsche harness to run the gauges and hopefully a few other things.
1) If i leave the porsche coolant sensor in the new motor, will the DME control the cooling fans still? Or will the multitude of missing sensors and wires tell the DME not to do anything.
2) After i cut my harness down I came to the conclusion i have 2 connectors for engine temp sensors. All the schematics that i've checked only show one coolant sensor. Are there 2? If so, what is each one for?
3) Does the one wire from the alternator go to a dummy light in the dash, I didnt see that it went to the DME at all.
4) Will the Porsche still send power to the fuel pump relay with all the engine sensors and wires gone? Or will it go into some type of limp mode that cuts power to the fuel pump relay.
I'd like for it to work out that the Porsche can still fullfill the cooling fan duties and fuel pump operation. If not i'll just have to bypass all the porsche stuff and make my own relays with wires going directly to the fuel pump and fans.
Thanks for any help!!
It's pretty much done, put the motor/trans in today. Fuel is hooked up. Still need to route coolant lines. After I get this eletrical stuff out of the way i'll be able to crank her up!
Since the crank position sensor input is missing, I bet the DME is not powering on the fuel pump and it's not firing the injectors and coils either. Not sure whether it will still control the fans based on the coolant temp sensor though.
You're right that the alternator wire goes straight to the instrument cluster.
996.1 uses a double coolant temp sensor (two separate sensors inside. One connects to the DME the other connects to the instrument cluster). 996.2 uses a single coolant temp sensor that connects to the DME only.
I'll have pics and a build thread soon!
Ok great, that means the Porsche alternator is wired the same as the donor motor alternator and will have a functioning dummy light on the dash. The dummy light acts as a resistor to the alternator and allows it to charge propery, otherwise the alternator will overcharge and burn out prematurely without the light/resistor.
I kind of figured that for the fuel pump relay, i had just better bypass the whole system and make my own relay to the pump.
Thanks for the info on the 2 coolant sensors, i'll figure out real fast which one is for the gauge!
Another question, do you know where the vss is located on my car? Is it the passenger rear wheel sensor?
