Btw, perhaps I should not admit it, but I kind of liked the soft clutch - just like the newer Porsches and also even the Ford Mondeo Estate that I just rented in Italy...buttery smooth, especially as I'm not aggressive driver and mainly use around town.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just back from a trip and discovered clutch very stiff and a little squeeky. One local Porsche guy said could be failed spring and be about $300 as probably not clutch since only 2k miles on it. Any thots would be appreciated. P.s. At first I thot I was imagination it. Patrick 2003 C4S 76k miles

POST 2Original post

Is the spring still there and attached to the pedal? Your mechanic is probably right

POST 3Original post

My spring broke into 4 pieces. Check that first!

POST 4Original post

Agree it sounds like the booster spring. Shouldn't cost $300 to fix though.

Read every post in this thread, or only the first 6 or so. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...matically.html

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all - the link was interesting read...so perhaps it's more PURE w/o the spring? Is this a common issue and just wears out over time? Btw, perhaps I should not admit it, but I kind of liked the soft clutch - just like the newer Porsches and also even the Ford Mondeo Estate that I just rented in Italy...buttery smooth, especially as I'm not aggressive driver and mainly use around town. I will try to get another local Porsche guy to get second opinion . The prior guy I spoke w/ on the phone said $50 parts and 1.5 hours labor, thus the $300. PL

POST 7Original post

I've got a stiff clutch since it's coming up for replacement and I can't imagine a "marshmallow" feel with a new clutch. I'm not a fan of my BMW's effortless clutch feel so, this may be a proceedure I need in the future. TC

The spring is actually $70-80. If it's only the spring, all they need to do is put a pin on the spring canister to lock the spring, then push the clutch pedal all the way down, then remove the spring canister and swap it the new one. If they are good, they should be able to do it in 10 min or less!

POST 9Original post

I have an '03. Even with a brand new booster spring, the clutch is plenty heavy compared to BMWs. I would say as least 3x the force to work the clutch and I like the stock feel.

POST 10Original post

I recently removed the helper springs and prefer it removed. But as a reference: https://rennlist.com/forums/11459278-post387.html
