Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Took me a couple of years as well, but a 5 gal bucket is also what I use (specifically Home Depot brand)...
Leading evidence: 'Use (specifically home depot brand)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best i've seen' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check torque markings' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

They were a little heavier than I thought but now that I know where I’m positioning it and which blocks to use (I used the medium with a hockey puck pad on top).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Every darn time I change my oil, I get oil on my garage floor.
The splash is even worse with my 996 on my QuickJack.
Ive tried several different drain pans, and now I finally found a splash free oil drain pan.
1st requirement is a QuickJack or really tall Jack stands.
It holds 5 gallons of oil and there was enough room to capture my UOA.
A 5 gallon bucket, why didnt I think of that sooner?
It is plenty large enough for a Porsche 996 with a 2 qt deep sump.
Lid on the bucket ready to take to be recycled. No transfer required. The bucket lid tool is essential!
I follow a similar path. Had a couple of messes trying other things and then found this. Big *** funnel and a 5 gallon mineral spirits can. I drilled a 1/4" hole opposite the spout as a vent.
I have the Danmar M6, and think you might be interested in my set up. I bought a oil catch can from Harbor Freight and cut the first tube down so that it can easily roll under the vehicle. I also have a lisle filter/anti splash pad trimmed to fit. Just an idea so you can have the vehicle higher while you work on it.
Thanks Sweet Victory, I definitely had the same thought...but check out the clearance between my garage door opener and top of the car...not going much higher! :-)
I had thought about getting a wall mounted torsion spring garage door opener to increase the headspace, but since my ceiling is already so low I have reverse-winding torsion springs on the garage door, and a wall-mount opener won't work without some creative mounting.
Scope creep at its finest.
I use a similar bucket set up. After the last oil change, I was feeling really proud of myself for not spilling a drop....until I realized I had forgotten to take the oil sample. I hate it when I forget things.
Yup, thats the way. I use a 5 gallon carboy and a quick jack. Take it to the town transfer station when full, dump and reuse. I used to use a 10 quart low profile pan that was impossible to lift without twisting and spilling when full. Had to use a drill pump to transfer to the carboy. Quick jack made this job much easier. Plus I can roll around underneath on a creeper and check out the rest of the car at the same time.
Ha!... Took me a couple of years as well, but a 5 gal bucket is also what I use (specifically Home Depot brand)... Works wonders, easy to cover and move around as well. I usually put two changes in before running it down to the re-cycler...
looks awesome to me. I just have to make sure I keep my finger on the drain plug when the oil comes rolling out.
I hate the splatter of the conventional drain collection pans, coupled with the uneasy feeling when the drain rate is faster then the receiver rate. Ugh.
looks like a good bucket solution!
I used this pan (which was posted in some other thread) last fall and didn't have any splash issues at all:

Of course, I didn't have the car way up in the air, either.
I've been using a regular $10 5 gallon floor drain pan with no spill/splash issues. Roll the car up on some 2 x 4's and drain away and replace filter.

That's probably the best I've seen for people that do their oil changes on boards.
I haven't seen it for sale locally, but would definitely order one if I didn't use my QuickJack.
I like getting my car higher so I can roll underneath and check all my torque markings for my suspension bolts, hoses, tires, etc.
Most drain pans have a "lid," which allows it to be sealed for transport to the oil recycler. This is the main issue I think, the lid is too high and any drain hole in the lid is not large enough for the rate the oil is coming out, at least initially. So you get splash, if not oil coming over the lip because the lid is overloaded.
For me, I just use an "open" drain pan type (like this, but this one is too small:
https://www.zoro.com/funnel-king-dra...CABEgLphfD_BwE
) and then pour the oil from that into a closed container for transport (I still use the wife's car however.) The advantage with this approach is you don't have to get the car as high as you do, but then I have to pour all that oil into a second container, which could lead to oil on the floor again.
Whoops! Billup beat me to it! Great minds, etc. etc.
I went with the Liftmaster 8500 to be able to lift the car to full height. Fewer moving parts so the quiet operation is another plus. It really opens up the garage space not having all that junk hanging down from the ceiling. I would definitely try to make it work if you can!
Just got some quick jacks and tried this trick. Not one drop on the garage floor. I used an old paint can and it worked great. Thanks Tex.
love the quick jacks as well. They were a little heavier than I thought but now that I know where I’m positioning it and which blocks to use (I used the medium with a hockey puck pad on top). I’m sure I can get the car up in 5 minutes
