My Indy wanted to add Mobil 1 but fortunately checked with me first.

I had two auto repair shops, but just recently sold them both to move back to my home state.

And if so, what is your recommendation for "when" to replace the Oem engine mounts?

The first set of test runs are performed, and the car has seen 104 miles on our local testing circuit.

We test here because there's no traffic, and there's 11 miles of downhill grades at more than 6% that helps with ring sealing under deceleration with engine braking.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The car that created so much drama online last year when it sold on BaT and didn't make it home from California to Florida (experiencing total engine failure in Texas) after being purchased is alive again.. This car had all sorts of issues, coupled to a very inaccurate auction description. It now lives again as a Stage II @ 4.0L Track Performer after being in our queue for exactly one year. The first set of test runs are performed, and the car has seen 104 miles on our local testing circuit.
I just figured I'd start this thread to help add to the storyline for those who have been wondering how things ended up with this car.
When car sold last spring on BaT it had what was considered to be a "crazy price" at the time. Now, one year later that crazy price suddenly became a cheap price based on what other similar (and even lesser) 996s are going for.
The buyer of the car has been great to work with, and he remained enthusiastic even though he was only able to drive the car a couple of days before it had to be towed from Texas to Georgia for our program to save it.. Now after another year has passed, he will finally be able to enjoy the car again..
Here it is at the summit of our testing circuit yesterday.
When failure becomes opportunity.....
Hey Folks!
I spoke with Jake. He is in Naples, Florida at the Revs Institute at the moment assisting with the 356 engine that he built for Miles Collier. (see picture below)
Because of high interest in the story surrounding the BaT Targa, we are planning to do a follow-up video on what was done to the car and how the story ended for this beautiful red Porsche 996 Targa.
Stay tuned to Rennvision on YouTube and please consider becoming a subscriber to the channel. Thank you!
A great ending to a story with a crappy start.
As I tried to say in the thread last year, it's buyer beware on BaT. The hype machine is in full effect there, and both BaT and sellers have very little reason to over-disclose - and even reasons to obfuscate when it comes to basic facts and vehicle history.
The nature of the auction format also hinders if not outright discourages PPIs, exacerbating the problem.
Glad this tale gets a coda.
Yep, BaT is a sellers site. BaT censures posts asking the sellers for details. Only a fool buys a car on BaT. Typical used car dealer tactics employed by sellers and the auction site. The buyer will always lose by paying too much and getting a car with more issues than expected.
I agree.. The auction format is not kind in a lot instances. The story that happened with this 996 is happening over, and over again in every sales format. This is especially true with the 996 since the prices are up so much.
Beautiful car, beautiful view!
I understand why that’s part of the test route.
You can’t get tired of that view!
And now the targa has an awesome engine as well.
Thanks for updating us!
We test here because there's no traffic, and there's 11 miles of downhill grades at more than 6% that helps with ring sealing under deceleration with engine braking. In one 52 mile loop on this circuit I can achieve a complete initial break in procedure.
Yep.. There's two spots we use for pics, based on where the sun is while testing.. Morning shots are in this spot, afternoon shots are just across the summit of the Mtn where the BaT Targa is pictured..
I try to stay away from all that branding stuff, decals and etc. I want the focus to stay on the craftsmanship that created the engine, not anything else. Everyone else is busy branding stuff, sticking decals all over it, and making it something it isn't. Meanwhile, we kick their asses with real results. :-)
Well.. the BaT targa saga continues.
Note: When the car arrived at FSI it was not running, or able to be driven:
During the initial test drive we heard a noise in the gearbox in reverse only. As the gear oil got some heat into it, the noise became more pronounced, so we checked it out really well before the first dyno session and found a tad bit debris in the gear oil.
The bearings in these gearboxes are sealed like the IMS Bearing in the engine is. This means they won't shed very much debris until they see a big failure. Listening to it with the stethoscope on the lift it is clear that one of the mainshaft bearings is failing.
Before we drained the gear oil we took another series of videos top document some interesting findings.... and the oil in the gearbox looked and smelled new.
So all further testing is aborted, and the car needs a gearbox.. We don't do this work, so the vehicle owner is going to source a transaxle from Tom at Carquip. We get the joy of swapping it out (labor charges) at our own cost, since this was outside the scope of the work in the proposal, and I can't charge anything more than was agreed upon at the onset of the project.
This car is the gift that keeps on giving. More like this is the car that keeps torturing...
More later. We'll be down for a couple weeks while the new trans comes in and we have time to swap it in.
Gotta love the problem cars. I had two auto repair shops, but just recently sold them both to move back to my home state. Finalized the second sale last week, actually. I dont think Ill ever go back into this business. Takes a lot out of you. But yeah, there are some cars that you just wish you didnt even accept. Nice to see you doing right by the client. I would have done the same thing.
Its not that bad for us.. Just a little time to make sure things are right.
The car owner is the one getting hammered from every aspect of this vehicle purchase.. I am determined to sort this car, one way, or another.
Fascinating video on the effects of semi solid mounts on performance.
Jake, what effects would there be engine performance with worn Oem mounts? Would the sensors pick up a similar "knock" disturbance resulting in performance loss? And if so, what is your recommendation for "when" to replace the Oem engine mounts?
I've never seen worn mounts make a notable difference.. I have never specifically looked for it either, though. We found our results with these non- stock mounts when performing tuning development, constantly noticing the cars going into safety retard when the OEM mounts were replaced. That was 15 years ago, and we see it over and over again.
Once our engine work was completed, the car needed new tires (worn to the cords on the inside rear) and the transaxle was noisy.
After undoing most everything the PO had done to the car we finally have it completed. Even though we fought all these additional issues, and hurdles, we still finished the job 4 days earlier than proposed 11 months ago.
Its finally ready to be enjoyed.
What was the original failure on the engine that was in the car? Would love to know what took it out. The BAT auction stated it had head work done very recent prior to ownership change. I am really curious how this poor car ended up so abused. Also the tire wear sounds like a crappy alignment from being so low. Looking at the auction pictures it doesn’t have adjustable rear toe links, so at it’s current ride height it is well out of range of adjustability on the rear toe. I would do that before wasting money on new rear tires or they will look the same in 5K miles.
The car had multiple engine issues. I did a series of videos for the teardown, and we will piece something together from them.. It even had bore scoring.
The tire wear was from bent suspension links that were visibly bent once the rear bumper and exhaust were out of the way.
The local tire shop was able to get the alignment within specs once the suspension issues were addressed. That's not my department, we just had to fit new tires to safely dyno the car without a tire exploding at 150MPH on the rollers. I told the owner that the suspension needs reconfiguration to be correct, even though the alignment is currently within spec.
Makes sense Jake, with all new links in the rear you can get it right to the edge of spec, but it will fall out quickly as the bushings wear in. Man that car was a mess, sad because it looks so nice. Hope the new owner finishes sorting it out and has many miles of enjoyable driving.
Im not trying to get you to air out the owners dirty suspension laundry, but if you can share..what were the reconfiguration items you suggested? I think I read somewhere that you prefer stock suspension, but is it just that or is it that things werent upgraded right?
