Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone tried a solar powered back up camera, like the following for example? https://www.mygekogear.com/solarst/

POST 2Original post

Pretty slick setup/design, but my neck still works well so it's not for me I will keep it on the 'future list' and think about the mounting.... Maybe someone here will have some experience with it.

POST 3Original post

No experience but thanks for the link. I ordered one for the soon to be driving granddaughter! I'll let you know when it gets here and my impressions.

I’ll be interested in your impressions

I found a youtube of some dude putting it on an older SUV. The company seems pretty solid in dash cams. This product appears to be fairly new and, therefore, few reviews.

thanks, I will likely go ahead and buy it. Adorama sells for $125 but it is on back order with them

I saw that. Ordered mine through Amazon for a few more $ but should be here this week.

POST 8Original post

I'm following this as well. I've gotten used to the backup camera in my wife's car. With the 996 being so low compared to most cars, it's a useful tool to have when backing out of a space in a parking lot, especially when surrounded by SUVs.

This is my primary reason for anting a back up camera as well. Hoping one of these solar cameras works out. The SOLARST is available at B&H for $125, free shipping https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...r_powered.html A similar BOSCAM camera is listed on Amazon Prime Day for $127.99 Amazon Amazon

POST 10Original post

I like the solar, ease of portability and the wireless aspect of this kit. So if it works well on the Rav I might consider one for the 996. Like Wyo I'm being spoiled by both of our newer cars. The Type R and Volvo XC40 have the backup cameras.

POST 11Original post

I like the idea of this one (especially the fact that it's solar powered and doesn't need to be connected to anything), but the fact that it connects to its own proprietary screen is a dealbreaker for me. It's too bad that it doesn't connect via Bluetooth to a phone. I've got a Rennline phone holder on my dash anyway, so I could easily use my phone as a backup camera display.

Well, here is one as you described, connects through an IOS or Android app. I ordered it but not shipped and payment refunded due to no inventory. This had some issues with IOS compatibility and not sure the issues will be resolved or the company remains solvent. https://fensens.com/products/100-sma...-backup-camera Since back up cameras have been OE for the last 10 years and required in the US since 2018, I’m not sure how much development will be invested in these. The application seems to be more directed to trailers rather than cars.

Fair point. When I get one, it's probably going to have to be a hardwired unit that connects to a replacement head unit for my car. Maybe once this microchip shortage is over I'll be able to find one, since that shortage seems to be annihilating the inventories of almost everyone and driving prices up on consumer electronics.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I received the SOLARST a couple of days ago and installed this afternoon. Worked perfectly out of the box, wide camera angle and image resolution is very good. I need to improve the loose power adapter connection to the power port. Overall, seems to be a well made device. I have a ProClip Mount installed but need the correct size holder for the monitor.

POST 15Original post

Do you calibrate the warning zone or is that fixed? Also, if you have the original cigar lighter fixture, it will always be falling out. Replace it with a US standard version. They're pretty cheap.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17525387

No calibration, everything at default setting. Thanks for the advice on the power output fixture. Ill try it

POST 17Original post

This technology would be very useful for people with older trucks pulling campers/trailers or even larger RVs where backing is extremely difficult. However, I don't want such a thing in my Porsche. I still have no problem with visibility in these cars when backing up. On the other hand, having a reverse camera with 360˙ parking sensors is really helpful and safer than without.

Costco has a different brand (TYPE S Wireless Solar-Powered Backup Camera). Same idea, though.

POST 20Original post

Wow, $70, I will try that for the travel trailer first. Thanks guys for the heads up!

Make sure you get one of the ones that comes with the screen--they sell (additional) cameras that don't come with a screen but they won't work unless you have one.
