I use an oil extraction device called a Topsider to remove the oil from my bevel drive Ducati.

Suggestion
The Italian engineers decided it was a good idea to put the drain and oil screen (conveniently sized to remove small rocks) behind an exhaust pipe so you have to remove the exhaust to drain the oil and clean the rocks out of the screen.

Suggestion
In lieu of cleaning the screen I just change the oil every 750 to 1,000 mi.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I put about 1 quart more oil in the oil pan than needed and am getting a overfill indication on the computer. Tried siphon through oil filler hole but cannot get tube into the oil pan
so siphoning has not worked. Too old to try to get under the car. Any suggestions
Remove drain plug. Count to 3 and put it back in. Use a clean container so u can refill if needed. It will make a mess so wear some rubber gloves.
Or just drain the whole thing and refill correctly.
I use one of these when I change oil in generators. They come with a tube that may well fit down the dip stick. I havent tried it myself yet. Mityvac is another brand.

The Italian engineers decided it was a good idea to put the drain and oil screen (conveniently sized to remove small rocks) behind an exhaust pipe so you have to remove the exhaust to drain the oil and clean the rocks out of the screen. The Topsider works well and saves wear and tear on the threads that hold the exhaust header into the head. In lieu of cleaning the screen I just change the oil every 750 to 1,000 mi. and only pull the screen out (and exhaust off) every couple of years. As others have mentioned it works right down your oil dipstick tube.
OP, one nice aspect about our 996s is, after jacking up the rear a bit, access to the oil filter and drain plug is a snap. I have been in your situation several times, and what works for me is to unscrew the drain plug just enough to allow a steady dribble of oil to escape. Some say to unscrew the plug all the way, but that is just asking for a mess, and you'll likely end up losing too much oil. Be patient and unscrew the plug just enough. Easy peasy.
Not to hijack this topic, but at what oil level does everyone else add more? If my dash indicator is more than a single notch below full, I add a bit. Is that unnecessary?
Wondering this question myself. Mine was near the last bar and then after putting 1.5 quarts in, it was at the very top bar - but I did not get an overfill indication light or anything of the sort.
I did wonder however if I overfilled it, but I figure an 1/8 of a quart will burn away naturally. Should be okay...
Or maybe I'll let a few drops drip out because shes jacked up already and I have to put the tyre on tomorrow, lol.
One notch below full is usually what I shoot for for when filling. Once the engine is to temp the oil will be dispersed and usually the indicator will shown about an additional notch lower. Never have had to add oil during a 3k change interval.
Its not necessary. You can run any oil level between full and add oil message, for just plain old street driving. For spirited driving, I wouldnt go below 1/2-way mark. I keep mine about 3/4 and my car doesnt use much oil. You can run all the way to the top, but overfilling is not good, so I like to have 1/4-way of caution (about 1/3rd quart).
Rule #1: Throw away the owner's manual in regard to checking oil level.
Only pay attention to oil level once per day: In the morning after the car has sat overnight on a completely level surface.
Don't add any oil until you are at least 1 bar from the lowermost reading on the electronic gauge.. Then ONLY add 1/2 of 1 quart. This puts you right back in the middle of the safe operating range.
People constantly working to keep the oil at the very top of the oil level indicator causes issues, and sets them up to over fill the engine. That is the worst thing you can do.
Hypersensitivity with oil level leads to failed AOS units, and other issues.
