I am looking at it this weekend (40 mile drive); but it sounds like a clean car with detailed service records.

What warranties do people recommend for the 99's that arent too much of a hassle incase the IMS issue turns fatal?

One of the members has already recommended some good Indy for doing the PPI.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Its a 1999 Cabriolet 996 with 60k miles on it. I am looking at it this weekend (40 mile drive); but it sounds like a clean car with detailed service records. A few quick questions from you experts:
1. Obviously, I plan on a PPI. The car is located in Mahwah, NJ (I live in CT), so do I just bring it to the local Porsche dealer for the PPI or try and hunt down a good indie?
2. When test driving, is there anything specific I should be looking for?
3. Price is $21k ... which seams reasonable.
4. On records; if there are any big gaps in oil changes, etc ... do I walk? Or is that just part of the risk of buying an old used car?
All of my cars recently have been leased SUVs; my wife is currently driving a new X-5; so this will be my first ever fun car. Any thoughts / hints for someone about to pop his cherry is appreciated.
Thanks!
1. The seller should drop the car off at the shop of your choice, within a reasonable distance.
2. A big smile on your face.
3. Not totally unreasonable, based on options and condition. You could find one for less, or more.
4. If it has detailed service records, it's unlikely there were a lot of missed maintenance appointments. The PPI should turn up anything too sketchy.
Research the IMS issue, and make sure you have some money tucked away for repairs/mods.
Good luck.
My only concern would be intermix. 99-01 cars have shown a weakness for intermix due to various causes - most often cracked heads. Your PPI will not be of any help unless it has already happened. Mine happened at 58K despite strictly adhering to the maintenance schedule. I installed a Porsche reman and only breathe easy due to the warranty. Food for thought..
1. Any guess on what percent of the 99-01 engines have issues (IMS / remix)? I know its a hot potato with lots of posts / reposts on the forums - and something that frankly, scares the hell out of me
2. Any good indy porsche guys in northern NJ that anyone could recommend?
3. On the remix issue; how do buyers get comfortable with these risks? Or do people just spend $20k and hope they didnt throw it out the window if it developes issues?
Thanks guys!
there is NO way you are going to be able to tell if a car will suffer from intermix by looking (even looking really close) - My 99' has like 130k miles on the stock motor,...as do many many other cars...and yes - some die...
is this a private seller?
RE how to deal with it, get a warranty or put some money iin the bank...or deal with it IF it ever happens
Its a private seller; the dealers seem to want about $3k more for the same year / mileage cars.
What warranties do people recommend for the 99's that arent too much of a hassle incase the IMS issue turns fatal?
Heh; I think I will probably be doing the clutch / IMS / etc upgrade with this car, as the thought of losing $15k overnight is brutal and the warranty costs of $4k are basically more than the fix.
It makes my gut spin thinking about buying this wonderful car; and having it go <bam> on me one random morning when I drive to work
As someone who suffered an intermix my advice is don't worry about it. There is really no way to know or predict if you car will have a cracked head like mine did. Do check the current condition of the oil and coolant for any signs of contamination. If it happens it can be fixed for far less than the cost of an engine. You might consider replacing the water pump as the flow of coolant and preventing the potential problem with pieces of the plastic impeller breaking off and getting into the cooling system is important. Jake Raby at Flat 6 is now recommending this as a maintenance item.
Get the PPI and if it looks good go for it, you will love the car.

Can I explain how excited I am ? I grew up watching slide shows of my dad driving across the country 11 times, while in college, in his 356.
Long overdue post. Here is my new baby.
Ive had it a few weeks, and all I can say is .... WHY DIDNT I DO THIS SOONER.
Thanks again to everyone for their help!
