had the car looked over and driven by a close friend in SF who is a porsche mechanic - mechanically excellent - he really liked the car - 2K miles since last oil/filter change - he cut open oil filter and it was clean as can be.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All - Just sold my 03 C4S w/72K miles - had the LN IMS upgrade done.
I'm curious how many owners cars have over 100K+ miles??...And has your IMS bearing been replaced??
I can't tell if you're serious or not. I know you've been on these forums for awhile now hence the confusion and wondering why you're asking now?
But to answer the question(not typical on RL, lol), '01 with no cylinder head issues, 125k miles on original engine and original IMS, Mobil1 used throught most of those miles, rev the snot out of it everytime I drive it. I think my RMS has been leaking for the past couple years but I don't lose sleep over it. I just place a cardboard underneath to keep my floor clean. RMS has been unsuccesfully replaced twice by the dealer so leaving it as is for now until I do the next major service and find the motivation/inclination.
thx for your post - i like your style.
since my turbo hunt is not going well i am seriously considering a high mileage C4S until next year - 2003 seal grey/black w/114K miles
i was curious how many high mileage C4S cars on on the forum
I have in my care a 2000 C2 coupe that has over 125K miles and I believe still on the original IMSB. The RMS has been replaced with the clutch sometime back. Running very strong.
2002 Targa currently 77,000 miles. Original IMSB. Oil changes every 3-5k miles with Joe Gibbs DT40. Filter and magnetic drain plug are spotless every time. Might do clutch at some time in near future guess I'll consider LN bearing at that time.
Well the 3.6 is exactly the same between mk2 NB and WB so I don't think you should just sample c4s owners.
I know you buy and sell all the time but the car you're considering sounds like it could be tough to sell later at those miles unless it's pristine and you get it for a steal. But do you really want to hassle with a bandaid at this point?
Seems like you might be frustrated at the current turbo selection and might need to cool off and recoup to start the search at a later point. Are these your emotions getting the best of you?
I could be totally off base but GL either way.
2003 C4S with 99,000 miles. As far as I can find in previous owners records original IMS bearing and RMS.
Oil analysis done with oil changes at 5000 miles show no sign of trouble.
I drive it like a sports car, not abusive but I do get it to show me its capabilities on a regular basis.
i miss my C4S bad- turbo search going nowhere and i need to save another $15K to buy the $50K example i really want w/low miles and it will be a car i keep. hands are tied with kid in college and another heading there shortly
since i like to buy a porsche w/70-80K miles and fully documented (especially considering the IMS issues)so when i sell it i don't loose my ***, i'm currently swimming in water i'm not accustomed too. - i found another seal grey/black car in northern calif w/114K miles - has some cosmetic flaws but really great driver - i can buy it at a great price
well serviced w/records for the past 8 years - original IMS, 72 yr old owner who has been a pleasure to deal with - i have a deposit on it and i fly down monday to test drive and visually inspect it.
had the car looked over and driven by a close friend in SF who is a porsche mechanic - mechanically excellent - he really liked the car - 2K miles since last oil/filter change - he cut open oil filter and it was clean as can be.
- small ding in sunroof lid - lower rocker scraped up at rear and under car so mostly hidden from view, front bumper has some nicks from parking - new tires, new clutch - just needs cabin air filter. all scheduled oil changes and driven not garage queen. paint is excellent as well as interior
since i only drive my porsche about 2-3K miles a year, i should be able to keep it under 120K when it comes time to sell - i figured i'd at least get my money back - heres the only photo i have of the car.
appreciate that you can appreciate:-)
yeah the turbo market took a large upswing a few months ago - it was only back in march there were some really nice examples in the $37-$38K range w/under 60K miles - i think those days are over OR winter market better time to buy
if all goes well on monday i'll post some photos from my drive home from SF
You can solely blame Jalopnik and //Drive show for the upswing in TT values.
Just like I blame Sport Compact Car magazine of killing my chances to get a good deal on a NSX back in the day.
Sorry that was my fault. I've been posting a lot of positive news as well as tweets about the 996 Turbo's to drive prices up. Now I'm working on the C4S, Gt2 & 3. Soon I'll have an article out praising the 40th. I see it's working, lol.
I have a 2003 C4S Tip with 105k approx - all original, no probe at all...drives strong, uses no fluids and just a thoroughly enjoyable car to drive...........seems to have held up very well to the milage (most of which was in the UK, but now in Southern France)
Good luck - let us know how it goes!
'03 C4S; now just over 50k. Purchased at 46.5. Engine pulled at 17,000 around 2006, but for IMS? Other? Haven't been able to wrest the info from Beverly Hills Porsche, where the job was done.
Runs well. Thinking about doing a Stage I with Jake Raby at 60,000 miles or so. That should definitively address the potential 996 3.6 issues: Including, power.
Just curious: Only 2-3000 miles per year? Other cars absorbing your attention, or just masochistic self denial? Life is short. If you buy the replacement C4S, drive it until it dies of exhaustion. Just one man's opinion.
When I still had a 2002 996 C4S, it was my daily driver. I had the IMSB changed with the first new clutch at just over 120,000 miles. The original bearing didn't show signs of impending failure. The car had close to 140,000 miles on the odometer when I sold it.
Mine is an 02 C4S with 102k mi on it. IMS / RMS replaced at 77k mi by RAC Performance in Tx and they also did a FVD stage 2 kit on the car - I took the K&N *POS ( I live in normally wet OR and K&N does not like wet...) off and put on a Schnell CAI with plug and stock box (new one as the prev owner did not include it in sale).
Other than sorting the car and doing all the maintenance, WONDERFUL.

I've been accustomed to doing this as I've had older German cars for awhile now. I reckon this is equivalent to "uncontrollable bowel movements", possibly experienced by Hurdi. Now had I come over to 996 territory straight from the Japanese brands, I would've flat bedded it directly and promptly to a shop and got a full rebuild done.
One of my favorite 996 "PM" issues is people replacing a non-leaking RMS. That thing will start leaking if you look at it funny, yet people seem to love to replace ones that don't leak a drop.
154k miles ('03) and yes, the IMS bearing was replaced and will be again as it is a wear item (the one in there now is the LN Engineering one (I still have my bearing that I took out...found it last week, along with the tools)
Going well, at Laguna Seca last weekend as well with PCA.
2002 C4S Tip
129,500 on the chassis; 85k on factory replaced 05 M96 (service records don't indicate the failure cause).
Original IMS given the new engine has the non-replaceable "upgrade."
Still runs strong w/ all Blackstone UOA's coming back clean... Knocks on wood.
