POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So having been considering my first 911 for a while (implication: theres more to come!) and decided that the 996 is a lot of car for the money, I was understandably concerned about all the IMS bearing failure horror stories. Initially, it almost put me off the car but then I thought some more So what proportion of 996s will suffer an IMS bearing failure in their lifetime? By all accounts it seems to be between 5 and 10%. For a moment, lets take the pessimistic extreme and assume 1 in 10 fail. Now thats painful if its your car, but Lets also assume that the cars may have a lifespan of 20 years and in that time cover 120,000 miles. Many will live longer and cover more miles of course, but again lets be pessimistic. So the average mileage might be 6,000 miles per yeara 2003 car then would have covered around 72,000 miles which seems to be typical for that age. On that basis then, we get a failure in 1 in 10 cars in their lifetime, and with a lifetime of 20 years that means a failure once in every 200 years of ownership. I dont know how long people typically keep their 996s 4 years perhaps? So there is a 1 in 50 chance of a failure during ownership, thats not so high. With a repair cost of say 10,000 or $15,000, that means an average cost of IMS bearing failure during an average ownership of 200. Certainly a tiny cost compared and less than a single service. Of course, as I said earlier, if its your car its going to hurt but I cant see what anyone should be put off buying a 996. What this does say though, is that someone offering an insurance policy at 300 per year should have a very profitable business modelat the end of the day, its a risk which is small but has big consequences if youre the unlucky one, no different to theft or accidentit would be nice to be able to insure against it. So if anyone in insurance fancies offering a new policy I might just be your first customer I still bought and love my 996 though ☺

POST 2Original post

Not quite sure of your point. I assume you mean it is a relatively small percentage of IMSB failures, so the risk is worth the reward. If so, I agree. Can't worry about everything in life or you will go bonkers.

POST 3Original post

Maybe trying to set up a rennlist IMS insurance plan. All members pay $300 into a pot and is your IMS goes the ins pays for it?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well exactly...it's a very low risk (one in every 200 driving years) but it's expensive if it goes wrong...isn't that what insurance is all about?

POST 5Original post

Oh, goodie, a new member crunching IMSB numbers in a new thread instead of the IMSB discussion thread. What a refreshing idea, and complete with novel thinking! OP, the IMS bearing is - by most rational people - now considered a wear item. Wear items have a service life, and once that service life is depleted, the part fails. 100% of wear items will eventually fail. The good news is that every car is full of other wear items, so there's a good chance your car will die from something else before your IMS bearing fails. However, if all other components last forever, there's a 100% chance your IMS bearing will fail. You - and every other new 996 owner - try to rationalize bearing failure by making up some numbers that make you feel comfortable. If that's what it takes to get you to buy the car, or convince the wife that the car is a good purchase - good on you. Your "calculations" assume that the part fails after a specific service life - 20 years, in your case. This is an entirely bogus assumption, but it's just one of the fundamental flaws in your happy math. The reality is that once you commit to buy a 996, you can fall into one of two camps: the "do nothings," who are OK with whatever happens, and the "do somethings," who actively try to prevent an IMSB failure. I understand the urge to try to minimize the worry that a failure may affect you. Odds are it won't - but cooking up statistics to make you feel better does nothing but further muddy the already opaque subject of bearing failure.

Yes indeed. I try to work the same logic with std's and hookers.

POST 7Original post

There must be at least 100 Rennlisters who own a 996. So....if any RL'r with a 996 has a verifiable IMSB failure, then all Rennlisters send the poor guy (or girl) $150. Then...when (not if), YOUR IMSB fails, you will receive the same payout! I call it "Insurance Makes Sleeping Better" Of course, I will administer the program. There is a nominal 10% Admin fee for each payout. But it's a small price to pay for piece of mind. You are welcome.

POST 9Original post

Hello Stewart. Don't let the constipated "old timers" on the forum discourage you from putting your ideas out here. The 996 is a great road car that marks a point in time in Porsche's evolution from "car maker" to "auto-conglomerate." Have a great time and drive it as often as possible.

POST 10Original post

IMSB insurance fund? I think I should administer it as 1) I have a spare coffee can and 2) I'm Canadian. Stewart - enjoy your car and thanks for posting. The official IMS thread at the top of the thread listings is really good and filled with info. I have questions too. Question to all that are now engaged with this thread: anyone take a stethoscope and listen over the IMSB site? This MAY be a crazy idea but so was "Internet TV" back in the 80's. And all joking aside, are there any after-market insurance companies that will cover a 15 year old car for something like an IMSB failure? EasyCare?

POST 11Original post

I can hook you up with some Rocephin and Doxycycline if you need it. Let me know.

POST 12Original post

John: these are exactly the kind of posts that need to stop being made. It's pure gibberish. OP "accepts" that there may be a 5-10% incidence of IMSB failure, and then by creatively applying nonsense, determines that he has a 2% chance of having an IMSB failure over the course of 4 years' ownership. EVERY thread on RL stuffed with nonsense "facts" serves to confuse the issue ever more. Google now has one more thread to index and serve up when someone searches for information about IMSB failure - and this thread is full of misinformation the original poster made up for the sake of convincing himself that he's unlikely to have any car trouble over the next four years. This f****g lunacy needs to stop.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 12396673

Seriously? This is a 'first-world problem that is fun to talk about. Want to experience some real f****g lunacy? Go do some volunteer work in a third-world country where kids starve on river banks with vultures 3 feet away. In other words, it's ok to be upset about something, why not make it a good cause...

POST 14Original post

...and just when I thought it couldn't get any more insane (inane?), someone chimes in about volunteering in a third-world country. Welcome to the best IMS thread ever.

POST 15Original post

If you are not volunteering in a third world country you're just contributing to the IMSB problem time to face facts sheeple

I just looked up false dichotomy in the dictionary and it linked to zeus993's post. The internet is fast!

POST 25Original post

POST 26Original post

I don't know what you did wrong, man - Stu said there's only had a 2% chance of IMSB failure, yet you managed to foul that up. Way to screw up the curve. It must be because you drove more than 26.2 miles a given day, as indicated by Rennlist's new resident mathematician.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 12396922

T3 over Salvation? Mad Max over Road Warrior?!? This is the real lunacy.

POST 28Original post

Stu also did the math and determined that there's less than a .223% chance of developing 914 battery-tray rust every 5.56 years. I thought you'd find this reassuring.

POST 29Original post

+1 to what 5CHN3LL said in his multiple responses above, except maybe his lunch selection. We need to have the mods cook up a system whereby anyone who does Not use the Search function to research IMS issues and instead blithely (and yes, innocently in most cases) creates yet another thread asking - again - the same questions, receives 345,876 volts directly into their typing finger.

POST 32Original post

We saw Mad Max this weekend - it was very good. I loved the cars. I'd let Charlize Theron doubleclutch me any time she wanted. The chastity belt was indeed scary. That being said, if I had a teenaged daughter, she'd be sporting one. The whole skull motif thing was way overdone. I am a big fan of skulls, Willie G, Punisher, etc etc etc , but there should be a limit and this movie exceeded it.

POST 50Original post

Quotes source post: 12398269

The first thing you have to do to be properly accepted here is to start yourself a thread about the IMSB (though you need to incorrectly refer to it as just IMS which is a related but different part). Bonus points if you don't search and read first, but go into great detail about your new theory that will once and for all solve the IMSB issue. If you really want to be part of the in crowd, some pics of the spatulas you installed to clean the air would go a long way.

POST 51Original post

Ideally, you will buy a 996 and then: a) a year later, sell it because you're afraid of the exposure, even after maniacally fixing every possible issue, yet continue to hang around RL996 offering ridiculous advice and smooching the a$$ of a prominent Porsche engine builder, even though you no longer own a Porsche of any sort (*cough* KrazyK *cough*) b) 8 months later, sell it in order to get a wide-body 997 with no IMS bearing, only to realize later that your 997 is a narrow-body with an IMS bearing, but continue to hang around RL996 trying desperately to be relevant & clever because the 997 kids and the 993 guys can't stand you (*cough* JohnnyIrish *cough*) c) several years later, continue to hang around here offering advice, regardless of whatever goes wrong with your 996 (*cough* Cuda, Ahsai, and everyone else not made of equal parts p***y and b***h *cough*)

Everyone bitches about new IMSB threads but notice how everyone responds to them? This one is on its fourth page in 2 days. A little over two years ago I purchased my 2002. My feelings on the IMSB issue was failure rate between 3-8% so if you call it 5% that's about 1 in 20. So for every car that had an issue there are 19 that did not. I drive mine daily. I'm hyper vigilant about oil changes and oil level. And examine my filter and magnetic drain plug for any metallic bits.

This quote is a prime example of why IMSB threads are stupid. When you and others make up statistics and masquerade them as fact, you contribute to the IMSB signal to noise ratio, making it that much harder for people who want FACTS to actually find them. However, congratulations on your feelings. Maybe you can call Natalie Imbruglia or Lisa Loeb and write a duet about them.

By then it will be a non-issue (unless someone finds a bubble car) as all the ones that were going to fail would have or would have been replaced. Yet the hysteria will live on I'm sure because we will still be getting at least one "OMG IMS!!!!111!1!11" thread a week. Meh, this is a pretty mild thread. Try the GWITF thread which started it's life as an anti-IMSB thread thread and has truly become epic. If you want a thread specific to the IMSB try either Johnny's early thread on the subject or dig up the one where mbmotorsport went a few rounds with Jake about roller bearings. Vargas' thread may hold the record for the shortest thread on the subject. Or the one a few months ago with the guy that lost his motor about 3k after replacing the IMSB with LN's and wants to blame the LN bearing even though no real investigation was done before (to make sure other known failure points weren't problems) or after (to trace which part failed first). The last also happens to have the distinction of being the first IMSB related thread to produce new (to us, Jake apparently knew for a long time) information on the subject in I don't know how long.

After some great comments by the OP and others such as these: The air-cooled crowd explained it to him quite nicely in this thread. A real informative read for sure. https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...l#post12235314

You're such a ****. Good God. You're not even good at trolling - you're so damn obvious about it. Please, PLEASE go troll somewhere else.

That's it, we need to submit answers to the devs over at Apple and Amazon so future peeps can just ask Siri or Alexa about it instead of starting a new thread. I'll let y'all come up with creative questions/answers to it for submission...

POST 77Original post

"Siri, do I need to be concerned about IMS?" "No, you are more likely to be gored by a unicorn than to experience an actual IMS issue"

POST 78Original post

Look bruh, I didn't write it. So relax, you'll live longer.

All the girls say he's pretty fly for a white guy...

POST 80Original post

Any question related to the IMSB should just return booby pics. Hell, I might re-enable that stupid "feature" if it did that.

Gator is in with my business as usual IMSB thread pic.
