A little bit of an update...I haven’t changed the fluid yet, but I did change out the engine mounts today with OEM versions.
Leading evidence: 'Replace fluid yet' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust cables' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 1 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I did Fluid change , Changed shifter and cables, It finally went away w/ new motor mounts, They weren't completely bad, just 1/4-3/8 out.

75w90 (I used Liqui-Moly) made a noticeable difference.

+1 on the Transaxle fluid change; I changed mine with Porsche OEM fluid and did notice the improvement as well.

Suggestion
You might find that a fluid change doesnt address the issue.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just purchased my 2003 C2 manual transmission car. When cold, the shifting doesn’t progress smoothly through the gears. If I double clutch, it drops right in. And when warm, after about fifteen minutes of driving it shifts fine. Are there any recommendations for what I need to do to resolve the condition?
thanks
Joe
What sort of shifter does it have?
Pull up the gear **** (standard pull off, tequipment has a grub screw)
Any short shifter might be notchy/difficult when cold especially if it's a cheap knockoff one.
You might find that a fluid change doesnt address the issue.
Most of the difficult shifting issues can be attributed to shifter adjustments, motor and transmission mounts, and fluid changes - in that order.
Now, if you do not have any evidence that the trans fluid has been changed in quite some time, sure, go ahead and do it, but please dont expect shifting to always be better after a fluid change, unless someone accidentally put the wrong fluid in there, or the fluid level is not correct.
And then finally, some 911s are always tight when cold. Just wait until winter and you will know what Im talking about! First gear is often the worst. I can not easily get into 1st gear while rolling when cold, and this was a problem on my 996, 986, and my 88 Carrera. Not all 911s have this problem, but many of them do. The 911 transmissions are built quite well, and they can last almost forever, but this is at the expense of shifting slower than youd think a fast car should be shifted. Its not as much a fast car as it is a sports car. We must take time to complete the shift, rather than jam it or slam it in there. And its going to be stiffer when cold.
I also believe the above comments to be true, sometimes when it's cold 1st is tricky.
Agree don't just jam it in gear. I find if it doesn't want to go in don't force it. Leave it out of gear release the clutch pedal then push the clutch pedal back in and try again.
Works for me

but to your point, it always helps getting synchro's spinning correct RPM.
Mike
Thank you Mike. Then Ill take action in the order youve mentioned, looking into the shifter adjustments first. When cold, I can feel the synchros spinning and I just go slow and lightly until it drops in. Often double clutching works well for the low gears. Do you suggest I pick up a shifter adjustment guide to assist?
Joe
Mike,
When purchasing the car I was glad to see only an inch to inch and a quarter gap between the bumper bottom and exhaust tip. But from what I see, replacement of the engine mounts is relatively easy. Ill give this some thought over the next couple weeks and likely make the change and see what that brings.
Joe
A little bit of an update...I haven’t changed the fluid yet, but I did change out the engine mounts today with OEM versions. Replacement was surprisingly straightforward and took only about an hour and a half to complete. As mentioned previously, when warm shifting works well, sort of like a bolt action operation. When I had completed replacement of the motor mounts, the car was cold, not driven for about 6 hours. A drive of about 5 miles found the shifting much easier from the first through the last shift. Still, not a smooth shifting experience like my base first gen five speed Boxster was, but firm and very exacting. I actually think I like this shifting response much more as it’s direct and has a very positive feel. One other thing very noticeable following the motor mount change is there’s no engine shake at idle or stop. It almost feels as though the engine is not running at idle. I still plan to change out the fluid as maintenance records from previous owners hows no record of this being done.
This has been my experience. The issue existed prior to installing a 997 shifter. Adjusted cables with the new assembly. New fluid, engine mounts later and yet the issue persists. I am planning on installing Function-first trans insert on the rear bushing but I'm not holding my breath that it will change the situation.
