And now I want to change the coil packs and spark plugs before I take it on an extended test.

I would leave the gas alone and run the car normally; the fuel will be fine if it's from February.

I'll test drive later before I start ordering more parts.

A well known M96 engine builder uses ethanol free too, but I dont think he mentions it much here.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone!
I'm a new 996.1 owner of an Arena Red. It's my first P car so I am so thrilled to have it, especially after discovering it has hollow spoke wheels and has the 220, 222 & 224 options.
I bought it out-of-state based on a good PPI check. I didn't actually see it until it was transported to my home about 4 weeks later. Then I had to wait another 3 weeks to register the car in Orange County, Florida. And now I want to change the coil packs and spark plugs before I take it on an extended test. And so I'm waiting for the parts to arrive. At this rate, I will be old and grey before I can explore the limits of what it can do!
I think the fuel has been in the tank since February and unsure whether I should drain the old gas before filling or mix new 93 RON with the half-tank of old fuel that is still in there. Any suggestions?
Oh and here's the obligatory picture. Apologies for the bush that jumped in the way when I was about to take the photo.
The car was freshly off the transporter and was covered in 2000+ miles of road muck!!
Welcome and congrats on the 996!
I would leave the gas alone and run the car normally; the fuel will be fine if it's from February. I've started using Marine Sta-Bil in my small engines and am thinking of using it in the 993. Haven't done enough research on it, but, if acceptable, it would help stave against the issues associated with ethanol.
Moving this thread to the 996 forum.
Here's my regime:
1. Don't drain anything
2. Travel in the car to the closest Shell station and fill up with Shell V-Power 93
3. Go for a day long drive - take the Hwy 95 to Miami then to 75 loop back to Orange Co. You'll burn the entire tank.
4. Refill with ONLY Shell V-Power 93
5. Thank me.
Thanks for warm welcomes, glad to be part of the community.
I like this idea. I guess you'd do the whole loop without stopping, apart from restroom breaks etc.. It might be tough not stopping off at Miami Beach for a cruise down Ocean drive and refreshments.
Welcome! I wouldn't worry too much about the gas, it hasn't been that long. I would just drive it and do what has been suggested and put some fresh 93 in it. I know the M96 is a bit more temperamental than many cars but I have had cars sit far longer than that and still start and run fine after a jump.
Welcome from another Arena Red owner. Youll love the color once you have it cleaned up. I have a few rock chips I need to work on minimizing, probably this winter. Have fun with it.
I was hoping somebody might vouch for ethanol free. There is a Wawa with ethanol free just up the road from me. The nearest Shell station is a bit far, but I don't want to break anything by not using it.
More bush!
It actually serves as a useful deterrent for unreliable cars in my stable.

I prefer ethanol free also. Unfortunately, the local E Free is only 85 octane. Fine for the outboard engines, lawn mower and lawn/garden equipment. I know where the closest stations are with high octane, E Free, so when in the area, I fill up.
After fitting updated 997 coil packs, NGK spark plugs, OEM air filter and OEM engine mounts it has totally transformed the car both for engine power and quality of gear change. It now feels like a 911.
I won't subject you to all the before and after pictures it's been done many times already.
However on the test drive, the front end felt a bit wayward at (ahem) highway speed limits. I was starting to think about the next job of fitting top mounts, bump stops, drop links and bush arms all around. But when I got home, it appears I left the hood open
. Would that aero disturbance be enough to cause an issue ? I'll test drive later before I start ordering more parts.
Note to self - firmly press the Porsche emblem if you want to close the hood properly.
A well known M96 engine builder uses ethanol free too, but I dont think he mentions it much here. I keep a 5 gallon fuel container in my pickup and fill it when passing my known locations in TX. Then I add it to my P cars when I get home. Its a bit more expensive, but remember our cars are designed in a country and at a time when corn in fuel was a new less common thing.
Flex fuel cars are designed for corn based fuels, our cars were not.
