Because Porsche installed a freakin' cassette deck with a 4 cassette holder in 2002 (didn't Sony release car CD decks in the late 80s?), I've been jamming on Black Sabbath's first two albums on CD, some Stones and the Who loaded into the 6 CD player in the frunk.

From that time period, I would be using lots of White Stripes.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The best driving soundtrack is the sound of a flat 6 pouring out of a free-flowing exhaust. However, a great road trip also needs some tunes. So, Im putting together a period correct playlist of great driving songs. What were the original owners jamming to on the radio, CDs, and iPods from 1998 to 2005?
It could be from any genre. Some of my favorite driving tracks from that era:
Take Me Out - Frank Ferdinand
You Tube
B.O.B - OutKast
You Tube
Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk
You Tube
What else should be on the playlist?
Some great suggestions here!
I love some Del, but for a driving track, I might go with Positive Contact from Deltron 3030
You Tube
Whits Stripes are so key to this era. I might have to pick two: for the Mk1 and Mk2.
Fell in Love With a Girl
You Tube
Blue Orchid

Love this thread idea. When I picked up my 996 Cab from my uncle a few months ago he said everything was great, but the audio needs updating. I promptly dug out my old CD's and embraced it. Here's my current rotation, using the CD holders:
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Oasis - What's the Story Morning Glory
311 - Greatest Hits
Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
Technically I have room for one more - I'm considering Beastie Boys - Hello Nasty
My 996 has the CD holders too, but the previous owner put in an aftermarket head unit without a CD player. Im going to replace it with a CD head unit.
Youve got a couple of my favorite Soundgarden and Rage albums in your rotation! However they are a bit early for the 996 era.
Instead, we could grab a Rage track from Battle of Los Angeles, like Guerrilla Radio.
You Tube
Hello Nasty is a great choice. Several good driving tracks to choose from, but I would go with Intergalactic.
You Tube
Great thread idea! I link to think I have eclectic taste in music so here are some of my fave driving tracks from 1998 to 2005
Music Sounds Better with You - Stardust
You Tube
Du Hast - Rammstein (bonus points for German lyrics)
You Tube
Call On Me - Eric Prydz
You Tube
Fasten Your Seatbelts - Pendulum
You Tube
Silver Future - Monster Magnet
You Tube
Control - Puddle of Mudd

I gave up all of my cassettes a few months before buying an 03 BMW R1150RT bike in 2012. Yep, that bike has a cassette deck too. The Germans must have bought out all of the cassette player inventory left in the world when CDs made their debut.
LOL fellas I love you ol' boys but it's
period correct
996 songs, not songs for your 996. One of you guys should start that thread though.
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming. Brought to you by a "period correct" gentleman.
I'm giving Refused a pass as TSOPTC came out Oct 1998 with the earliest 996's
You Tube
Im a huge fan of Black Sabbath and The Rolling Stones, but those are only period correct in the sense that the people who could afford these cars new were probably boomers
1998 is definitely in bounds!
Burning a CD is a great idea. It would run afoul of copyright, so Im not saying I would distribute such a thing. All Im saying is I have an old laptop with a CD burner in my closet...at the very list I will compile this into a Spotify playlist and post it.
Interesting thread.
I recently came across this mix tape that had been in a box in my Mom's attic for two decades. I made it for the 1997 Newport Beach to Ensenada Mexico sailboat race. I still have cassette players in the '84 and '88 BMWs so I gave it a listen last weekend when I took the M5 for a drive. All the songs predate the 996 but still an interesting snapshot of what I thought was mix tape material 23 years ago.
The songs on a mix tape for sailboat trips were usually a little different than for a roadtrip because there were 12-15 crew members listening and not just me.
Side A
Shane MacGowan & Sinad O'Connor - Haunted

World Party - When you come back to me
Oasis - Champagne Supernova
Smashing Pumpkins - Rocket
Janes Addiction - Janes Says (live version)
Thomas Dolby - I Love You Goodbye
Inspiral Carpets - Two Worlds Collide

Ramones - Howling at the Moon
Dread Zeppelin - Your Time Is Gonna Come
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Feat
Mazzy Star - Halah
Heather Nova - Walk This World
Yes! We need some Chemical Brothers. Exit Planet Dust is an all-time great driving album, but its too early. For this era, I would go with Let Forever Be.
You Tube
I realized that we cant do this era justice without some LCD Soundsystem.
You Tube
And despite his bizarre behavior lately, Kanye is key to this era. Two Words is a great track.
You Tube
I guess that depends on how you define "hit". In my opinion, any best of 80's that doesn't have Dead Kennedys or The Replacements or Husker Du or Meat Puppets on it is not much of a list. But you couldn't escape the songs on this CD in the 80's...they were of the era. (And don't tell me you aren't humming "Africa" to yourself right now lololol!)
Gorillaz Feel Good Inc. makes the cut - 2005 release.
You Tube
Not sure if this is a great driving song... but it feels wrong to not have a track from White Pony on our mixtape.
You Tube
Kanye is absolutely fair play - 996 era Kanye is peak Kanye.
When the 996 was new I was in elementary school
Probably a lot of top 40 and Britney Spears I was listening to then.
And Now That's What I Call Music compilations
Not really period correct, but this is the best song to drive to: Red Barchetta - Rush

More period correct Rush song would be One Little Victory:

I made a playlist on Spotify. I added Fuel by Metallica. It's one year early but what the hell. I really wanted to add Hell Yeah by Rev Theory but it's 2008. If that song doesn't make you drive fast, I don't know what will!

Only 1 song on all 6 CD's in my changer
Just kidding, but really it's the only one you need to drive... crank it up and go! Otherwise, the engine noise is just fine.
You Tube
...
Thanks for putting the playlist together - looking forward to a long drive with everyone's contributions!
+1 on Rev Theory - love that song! Another one of similar vintage is "Ready to Roll" by Jet Black Stare....
I enjoy my 996 way too much to drive it while listening to music from that era. Put me down for some early Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers or early Allman's. Or something from the Atlantic Rhythm & Blues boxed set, which is what's in it at the moment, I believe.
