I'd go with an ir thermometer for checking the manifold to see which cylinder is cold.

From cold, run the engine for 5-10 seconds and then (carefully) feel the header - the cold one is the one not firing.....

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I changed the coils and plugs on one side, started the car and everything ran fine. Did the same for the other side and one of the new plugs/ packs isn't firing. Without going through the process of elimation by swapping the old parts back in one cylinder at a time, is there a secret? Would an OBDII reading tell me which cylinder is misfiring? I went though and removed then reseated all plugs, coils and connections. I heard the snap on all three coils telling me the connectors were seated.

POST 2Original post

OBD will tell you the cylinder that is misfiring. For example: P0301-P0306 - misfire, cylinders 1-6. Once you have scanned and recorded code(s), if your OBD-II reader doesn't define them, Google will.

POST 4Original post

Or if you don't have an OBD tester ... From cold, run the engine for 5-10 seconds and then (carefully) feel the header - the cold one is the one not firing..... If you don't want to try your fingers, run the car a little longer and brush on some water and see which cylinders evaporate.

POST 5Original post

I had the same problem in my BMW after changing the plugs. It was a bad coil extension. Confirmed it by noting the first misfire cylinder and moved the coil extension, fired it up and read the error and it had moved. Process of elimination.

POST 7Original post

I'd go with an ir thermometer for checking the manifold to see which cylinder is cold. Mr. Tinker clearly has tougher hands than I...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good suggestion on checking the header. I used my hand and figured it was cylinder 1. I put the stock coil back in and it worked. I also borrowed my friends ODBII reader. Confirmed. I'll be honest, this was my first intrusive work on a Porsche. I think I spent more time looking at the quality construction and admiring the beauty that is. In two weeks I am dropping the transmission for a new clutch, IMS, RMS job. Time to get serious.
