Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I used Orients recommendation on post #14 on the link above.
Leading evidence: 'Use orients recommendation' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check vacuum pressure at idle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have also had a small go at checking vacuum pressure at idle on both sides of the Y piece in the engine bay but both hold good pressure.

I have the PSE system and when I press the button you can audibly hear the exhaust note change - quieter when on and louder when off.

I recently test drove another 996 for an out of state friend and it didn't have factory sports exhaust, didn't realize until then how much it really adds to the driving enjoyment.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

To all 996 owners with PSE, especially those with a 4S.
I think my 996 C4S exhaust behaves oddly. I think it's a fault but you might tell me it's normal behaviour. The problem is that I've always had this 'fault' on my car so I don't know if it's a fault or intentional behaviour. If you have the same car, perhaps you can shed some light on this.
When I start it, it's noisy and sounds great. It quiets down as it runs for the first 5 mins.
I have the PSE system and when I press the button you can audibly hear the exhaust note change - quieter when on and louder when off. Default is off so loud.
Here's the rub. Up to around 1500rpm it's got a good noise then it fades out to the point where it's so quiet it's like driving my partners Yaris. If I keep accelerating, when I get to around 3500rpm the exhaust suddenly gets loud again. I mean it's immediate - like someones flipping a switched marked loud. It sounds great.
It happens in 2nd and 3rd gears most noticeably and the PSE is in the 'off' position. If I have the PSE button on, then it's just quiet all the time and that works fine.
So why the silent spot?
I did read somewhere that German market cars might have had a system that turns on and off the PSE at certain speeds to prevent people driving round residential streets with a loud exhaust but information is thin and I don't think I was ever on UK cars.
I have also had a small go at checking vacuum pressure at idle on both sides of the Y piece in the engine bay but both hold good pressure. One side has only a microscopic leak but not enough to cause this kind of issue.
I think that's normal. my 03 4s factory sports exhaust is relatively tame until approx 3500 rpm, then its a thing of joy. there have been threads on this forum in the past of people who bypass the low speed internal disengagement, but i dont think its necessary.
OK thanks
@Optionman1
super helpful.
I did try searching before I posted but I couldn't find the posts.
Going to get in there and do it on mine... I think the silence is daft... why have the PSE button if half the time in noisy mode it's quiet anyway!
once my car comes up to operating temps i'm seldom below 3k-3.5k rpm so its not an issue. I recently test drove another 996 for an out of state friend and it didn't have factory sports exhaust, didn't realize until then how much it really adds to the driving enjoyment.
Id highly recommend the hack per this thread. I altered the relay in order to retain the functionality of the dash mounted switch, just a heads up as there are a number of ways to hack the PSE bypass in that thread.
@Giorginetto
Indeed this I have found out.
So glad some people shared how to disable that RPM thing.... it was annoying me so much!
Why have a sports exhaust thats quiet half the time?! You could argue that it's because sometimes you want a break, but surely thats what the button is for! lol
Some years ago i bought a PSE relay ' hacked' with a switch on it to allow PSE to be on at all timea... for some reason i havent used it yet, i dont often switch off the PSE, perhaps its worth using it to have this awesome soundtrack aceoss the entire rpm range....
Drivers footwell. You have to pop the fuse cover off, remove the 4 screws holding the surround and then they are up above the fuses.
At least thats on my UK RHD Cabriolet anyway.
PSE is not rpm dependent it is quiet from 30-45 mph. There is some kind of quiet law in neighborhoods and thet is why Porsche put this (quiet) relay on the cars.
Indeed and the disable button can be useful at times. However, the PSE valves open/close surely with reference to rpm, thats what i have noticed anyways....
