After finding the auction for this 996.2 C4S and seeing that the IMS bearing and clutch had all been recently replaced I couldn't pass it up.

I would recommend contacting a customs broker to get the car across the border.

If they do not offer this service in Vancouver, I am sure they could recommend someone.

I can see myself changing the oil every two months on this 996.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all. I am a new proud owner of a great condition manual 2004 996 C4S w/ 99.5k+ miles. $24.1k (+1k auction cost). Recently took advantage of carandbids and outbidded another buyer on a heart thumping bidding war. Car is currently in Vancouver BC in storage. I live in Illinois and have my fingers crossed that the border will open after 9/21. After I turn 37yo.
Otherwise I will suck it up and pay for shipment ($1.7-2.2K)
I rather take a one way flight to WA, pick it up at the border, and drive it cross country!
I've always enjoyed the look of the 911 w/ the round headlights so quite honestly 996 at first was not my first choice.
After finding the auction for this 996.2 C4S and seeing that the IMS bearing and clutch had all been recently replaced I couldn't pass it up.
Compression test @ 99.4k miles showed 200 PSI in all cylinders.
In a rather short time I eventually began to enjoy the aesthetic of this 996 despite not having ever laid my eyes on this particular purchase in person.
I drive quite a bit for a living approx 140-160 miles/day mix of highways and city currently on a nimble 2016 BMW X1 M package.
I plan to drive the 996 at least 2-3x/week. Thankfully for its AWD I will plan to also drive it in winter w/ the appropriate tires.
I can see myself changing the oil every two months on this 996. I can take care of the usual maintenance. I just hope nothing major
will interfere with the enjoyment of owning my first ever Porsche. I will consider adding the IPD Plenum sometimes in the near future.
Thank you for the warm welcome!
-Carlo
Current mods on the car:
FabSpeed Maxflo exhaust
H&R springs
Apple CarPlay-/Android Auto-compatible head unit
Awesome! Welcome. These cars are wonder daily drivers. I also like the little BMW; my sister had a 135i for awhile, and I drove it, it was wonderful. But for about the same price, you have a 911 😳.
Cool for you! Let me know if you need a ride from SeaTac airport to the border, I may go up to our office in Surrey when the border opens up, maybe I can help.
thank you for all the warm welcomes! I look forward to learning all I can from this community and keep this beauty running to eternity!
I do need yall help in transporting this across the border. I know I want to either fly out to WA or Vancouver directly to pick the car up. The cost for shipping sounds ludicrous.
facts:
-this 996 was originally bought and registered in Maryland
-Porsche created a memo certifying it meets DOT standards on 7/27/20
-it is currently registered in Canada
questions:
-will Illinois DMV provide me a temp plate to be able to drive this cross country?
-some of these transportation companies have told me a 4.5% import duty tax whilst google says 2.5%....what is correct?
-will I be able to get auto insurance whilst it is in Canada?
this seems a bit more challenging than first assumed.
Awesome! Congratulations and welcome.
My father always gave me a hard time about owning a convertible just outside Chicago. "Why buy a car you can only use 3 months of the year!" If it was above 35F, the top was down! So I got 6 months out of it. Have fun, see you on the boards!
I would recommend contacting a customs broker to get the car across the border. Summit Customs Broker is based where I live in BC but they also have an office in Vancouver. They can get the car across the border and deal with the import paperwork. You would pick up the car at their warehouse in Washington. If they do not offer this service in Vancouver, I am sure they could recommend someone.
I agree.
Ive found plenty of days to drop the top in Chicagoland, as we can easily have 65F days here and there in October or even December or January.
john
i will call them up this weekend if they are open. But how hard will it be for an American to get a temp plate while in Vancouver? Will it take hours or days? Can I apply for it online?
In my opinion there is no point trying to pick up the car in Vancouver because you will not be able to get the car across the border. It is currently closed and I highly doubt it will open anytime soon. You can fly to Vancouver but you will not be able to drive the car back into the states because the border crossing is closed. You need the customs broker to get the car into Washington so you can pick it up at their facility. They can still take it through the border because it is still open for commercial traffic and they will complete all of the required import paperwork for a fee. Once the car is in Washington then you can get the temporary (transit) plate from Washington.
When I bought mine from NJ, we (family) piled into the minivan and drove down. Only made it 20 miles from the dealer when the alternator died. Easy enough fix in my garage, but I knew this was a possibility. If we didn't have this Covid thing going on, I might have looked further away or considered cars from Canada too. Just shipping it and having it delivered will probably save some aggravation in the short term. Getting it home and you can start to work through any issues close to home.
