Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking at buying this potentially. It's long distance. The seller sent me a couple of videos, including these of the engine idling. I'm looking for opinion as to whether this sounds normal or anything is off. This is a 996.2. I will get a PPI as well, but figured ask the brain trust here first before proceeding. Thank you everyone, for any input. You Tube You Tube

POST 2Original post

Hard to say, those videos are not taken from the optimal spots. Check out this recent thread and go from there: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...e-at-idle.html Definitely like the color, what's the interior. Cannot wait for the day I find a clean Coupe in dark teal metallic or forest green metallic with brown guts...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I dig the color as well, not the silver or black you see all the time. I'll ask the seller for a better angle, I think I know what you mean. I'm paranoid about ticking sounds since I read too much online

POST 4Original post

Take 3 videos from underneath the engine. One under the clutch, one under bank 1 cylinders and another under bank 2 cylinders. something like this: You Tube You Tube You Tube

POST 6Original post

I dig the color as well. Engine sounds great in your clips, man.

POST 7Original post

First let me say the bore scoring series is excellent. Tons of good information in there. However, there is A LOT of misinformation around the inter webs and unfortunately in that series as well that will make you crazy. M9X ENGINES TICK. Plane and simple, its a fact. Whether its valve train noise, injectors, or chains there's some ticking coming from all M96 engines, yes even the ones rebuilt by flat six. What a healthy M9X doesn't do is SLAP. Theres a distinct difference in the sounds. You do not want to hear a metal on metal slapping noise.

POST 8Original post

That engine block is super clean... much cleaner than engine compartment. How many miles on car what year?Have the owner send you a picture of the engine serial number.Curious to see if it has a Porsche reman engine in it......

What misinformation is in Jake Raby's series? First of all we have to be careful to clearly define our terms... that is, between a "sound" and a "noise". Sound = good Noise = Bad I agree the ticking noise can be confusingly similar to other sounds to the untrained ear. Piston slap associated with bore scoring is a rhythmic tapping sound in a localized area that has a characteristic tempo. Many mechanics would misdiagnose it as a noisy lifter. But if you learn and implement Jake Raby's instructions in Part 4 of the Bore Scoring series, you'll know how to properly vet the car that are suffering from the early onset of bore scoring.

Thanks B3! I think that is a pretty succinct description. Totally agree. Its been a few months since I watched the entire focus on bore scoring series, but Im almost certain Jake says multiple times in that series that M9Xs dont tick. Thats not true, these engines definitely make some ticking noises and its perfectly normal. Probably just semantics, but I think that idea that they shouldnt tick has caused some confusion. I know it has with myself.

POST 12Original post

these motors are noisy wait until you are in a drive thru next to a wall, you will freak out with the sounds the motor makes reflecting from the wall

POST 13Original post

The engine sounds fine to me. I don’t hear any piston slap. Sounds good enough to spend the money on a PPI. Get a quality invasive PPI and then buy with confidence.

POST 14Original post

The way the seller tried to close the door made me cringe.

Wait....B3??? When did this happen??

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for everyone's input. Seller sent me one more. Anything funny around 0:13 to 0:25? I wish I had never heard about bore scoring, the paranoia is making it hard to commit to buying one of these, LOL Damn you internet! You Tube

POST 17Original post

Sounds clean to me, brother. Trust me. Driving one makes it easy to forget about all of these boogeymen.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 16879031

Yep, sounds good to me. I dont hear any piston slap. But get a PPI. Piston slap happens in later stages of bore scoring.

I had the coronavirus and they let me out of prison! haha

POST 20Original post

Hard part of getting videos is whether it is of a dead-cold start-up. PPI on my 996 missed worn paddle noise because car was delivered warm. Also, smoke on cold start-up? You can at least waive any deposits pending in-person pick-up, otherwise avoid cars bought on-line or long distance unless you have deep pockets. My $20,000 cents.

If I go through with it, I will test drive in person, and ask for it not be driven overnight. Then take for a PPI in person as well. I'm about about 3.5 hours away from the car, so close but not close enough to just pop over until I'm pretty sure.
