Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Kind of an unusual situation, but I would like to know the best way reproduce a check engine light on with cat converter error codes... Background: Driving back from my last DE, the check engine light came up. My Porsche Indy mechanic looked at the error codes. It revealed that both cat converters have issues. In addition, there is a noticeable rattle from the rear. A close inspection confirmed the diagnostic. This looks like a common issue from what I read on rennlist. Unfortunately, while checking all this, the codes were erased by mistake and the check engine light is now gone (!) I called a local Porsche dealer: Converter replacement would be covered under the 8y/80k emission warranty (which runs until Nov 2010 for this car) - Provided that they find error codes related to the cat converters and the check engine light is on. .. They won't go for just the rattle. (Cost of each converter is around $1.6k! from what I understand). So, to get the warranty, I just need the check engine light back on with the original cat converter fault codes. I tried driving the car hard on the street, my wife has been using the car for her commuting, etc. ... without success, the darn light is still off. So my questions are: - How can improve my chances to reproduce the issue? - Should I just forget about this warranty and just get a Fabspeed Sport Catalytic Converter X-Pipe for $1500. - Any experience with these? Are they street legal? Next DE is early Sept and I need to resolve this soon. Quite a bit of $$$ involved which could be used somewhere else. Any good advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: After several weeks, was able to get the codes back. P0420 & P0430 (from what I read, cat. conv. eff. bank 1 and 2). Replaced by Porsche dealer under 8 year/80k miles federal emission warranty. No question asked. Smooth process. FM

POST 2Original post

I think if you drive the car a bunch, the error will come back. Personally, I'd opt for the factory warranty ones rather than the fabspeed ones... You can always buy the fabspeed ones at a later date. Do you know what the exact error codes were? (the numbers?) maybe just unscrew the O2 sensors? Somehow spritz a little fuel in there? Unplug a coil or 2 so raw fuel gets into the exhaust (be careful of a backfire!)?

POST 3Original post

Drive it twice a day for 10 min. It's bound to come on again in 2 weeks. btw you can drive it fine with the check engine light on when it is for the cats. I've even done a few DE with it on. Though I had one go and I left it until the other cat went which took a 4 months for it to go. I noticed a huge power increase when I got the new ones installed but I switched them for the fabspeed xpipes as soon as the new ones were put on since my car was just going out of warranty and I can install the new oem ones back if I ever plan to sell the car. yes the fabspeeds are street legal. Weight less and probably will last much longer because they are the less restrictive 200 cell cats.
