My problem was having to wait to contact you because I wanted to wait longer than most people.

Also to test the waters, I called all 5 shops, the job was to replace AOS with hoses, would you believe that in the Houston area non Porsche dealership someone quoted $2326, my best quote and that was the shop that I liked the best was $1,000 but that also included installing a new drive belt.

It was something like $60 and has a button on the handle which will change the view from straight on to side view without attaching a mirror or attachment.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Squirrel introduced me to a guy that worked for one of the shops and I drove my car to his house to do the first oil change fix a few minor things and meet the guy in person.
My lift is finally getting installed this week, so I'll be dropping the engine. Will be installing UAOS and new injectors. Will check Vario Cam pads and may replace. Suggestions appreciated on other preventative maintenance/things to check.
On last oil change I dropped the sump cover. A few tiny pieces of orange plastic which I assume is from the pads. A few pieces of black silicone. I tried to look for bore scoring with a bore scope. I quit for two reasons. I was using an AutoZone rental scope with a clip on mirror. First, anytime I bumped it when inserting, the mirror twisted away from the required angle. Second, the mirror did not attach securely to the scope. Even though I also taped it on, I feared leaving the mirror behind in the engine.
I've done some searching for a right angle bore scope. Crazy expensive! Anyone know of a reasonable priced alternative or a work around.
I thought I heard Jake mention the right angle mirror. Maybe that was part of the lack of my success scoping the bottom end (severe lack of practice too). I can see the advantages of having it, either as an add on or a dedicated one if its reasonably priced.
I bought a borescope off amazon by Depstech. It was something like $60 and has a button on the handle which will change the view from straight on to side view without attaching a mirror or attachment. For me it was worth the little bit extra vs. the one where you have to attach something to see at a right angle. I'll try to find the link.
This is the one I bought. It's on sale for $60. You can see the other options on their website though.

A right angle isn't necessary. If you can cast enough light into the area with a flashlight, you can see the image from further away, reducing the necessity of the right angle.
I don't like the mirrors to be used inside a working engine, the chances of them breaking or dislodging and becoming foreign object debris is too great.
I have a professional scope that has a right angle camera, but the issue with it, is the diameter of the camera is too large.
This takes time, and patience the first time that you do it. There's no instant success, you have to work for it. People don't like work these days, they feel they are entitled to an instant result.
Not happening.
Amen, when I did mine the first time it felt like I spent all day trying to do it.
When I had my Boxtser M96 on my engine stand, I could turn it upside down/sideways/right side up and practice scoping all 6 bores until I got better at it.
Being able to see where the borescope was going in a partially assembled engine was great.
Without the pistons you could see what you were and weren't doing so much easier.
I'm better at it, but it still takes a long while to get into each bore.
Patience, and the ability to walk away for a while when you're frustrated is key!
Plus, the thinner your borescope the better.
This is the Amazon culture..
Generally people want instant results. Crawl under the car, spend 30 seconds looking, and they are done. This is happening with everything, so people have an expectation of instant gratification, and generally have no patience.
As an example, I have always had around a year- long wait for an engine, since my Aircooled days. Back then people expected the wait, and they'd call well in advance, or if the car broke out of the blue, they'd know that a wait would be associated with the experience. I can only think of a handful of times where someone was shocked that out took a year for my level of work to be completed.
Today 75% of people with the 996 and newer cars are astonished that they have to wait for even more than one week for an engine to be built for their car...
I guess patience isn't part of the 21st Century culture... Unless you are here, where everything steps back in time to around 1988. Like it, or not.
I purchased the Teslong borescope that has a second camera positioned at 90 degrees and both have LED lights. It's perfect for this purpose. It's 250 on Amazon.

I think that and a flashlight are the keys to success. Are you able to share how you went about it in some greater detail? I believe you can't really bend the borescope in a particular direction (like medical grade stuff), only rotate, once it's inserted into the engine. I'm curious if it was helpful to first bend the borescope in a particular direction or was it just inserted straight. Also, my guess is that in order to look at bank 2 cylinders you want to insert the borescope from the bank 1 side. Dropping the sump is so easy I'll probably play with this some more at next oil change with the car on quick jacks.
I think another thing that would be helpful is to make yourself comfortable during this. If you're laying on the ground put down a soft blanket. Bending yourself on a hard surface into weird positions leads to discomfort which leads to frustration which leads to poor results.
Good, fast or cheap...choose 2.
Although in truth, lots of places can't provide more than 1 of those...if even that.
IMHO Flat6Innovations speed at which they work is great for the customer.
No rushing work through, or hiring anyone that can turn a wrench to build even more engines...at the detriment of quality.
I'll take 1988 quality of work and FSI attention to details and wait patiently for my turn.
My problem was having to wait to contact you because I wanted to wait longer than most people.
Thankfully you worked with me so my completion date is at the end of 2022.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't asked for such a long wait!
I thought it would take until the end of 2022 to have the money budgeted, but here I am with the full amount waiting to send the car to you in 13 months.
That is a good one. Ive been really tempted to have a few of these and offer a bore scoring consultation service with tool rental.
Then I remember that its 2021, people suck, and the more people Im exposed to the better the chances are of dealing with the wrong one..

I now have a relationship with a part salesman at a Porsche dealer. He gives me shop prices. Anyway I ordered the amp bracket for my car. Over 7 days already . May be here Monday.
after dealing with the worst kind of people in over 100 countries around the world nothing surprises me from an individual, I expect the unexpected. I looked at 5 individual Porsche shops before making the decision of who Im working with. Squirrel introduced me to a guy that worked for one of the shops and I drove my car to his house to do the first oil change fix a few minor things and meet the guy in person. I loved the guy, I told him if he needed capital I will help him. Anyway today I have referred 5 guys to him. Also to test the waters, I called all 5 shops, the job was to replace AOS with hoses, would you believe that in the Houston area non Porsche dealership someone quoted $2326, my best quote and that was the shop that I liked the best was $1,000 but that also included installing a new drive belt. That particular shop is in a rural area, so their rent or costs are lower, also when I took my car out there the manager put my car on a lift got a flashlight and basically did a fast ppi no charge. Im glad that I dont work no more and I dont have to deal with asshlss I dont like. My work today is just to manage my investments, made a ton of money this week. Almost bought a 2004 C4s with 70,000 miles, owner did not took my max offer on dealtank.
Purchased on Amazon for $52.49.

Work great. $50 Amazon gift card for submitting a revue with video. Net cost $2.49.
Pcola's scope is the same brand I posted earlier. for me it worked great and even at 50 some dollars, it's well worth it for other uses as well. When I was installing my wrist pin clips, I screen mirrored the video to a large screen tv that I have in my garage which made it even easier to see what's going on as you can show both the side video and the straight on video in the same shot.
