Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I thought I would boresope the cylinders since I had the sump off to perform an inspection. This was an adventure in patience for sure. Any opinions on what you see? I did my best on snapping pictures when I was in a good position, but anybody who has done this can attest it can be difficult at times. I numbered the cylinders in the pictures. Nothing leads me to believe that I have bore scoring, just thought I would have a little fun. It's a 2000 996 with 56k and lived its life in mostly warm climates on the west coast. It does not burn any oil and has no unusual sounds. I perform regular oil changes with DT40 and send it to Blackstone for analysis and received no issues from the analysis. The IMS bearing was changed with an LN unit a couple of years ago.

POST 3Original post

I can only compare to obvious stage 3-4 bore scoring pics Ive seen. If these were my cylinders Id feel pretty good FWIW.

POST 4Original post

Im no expert for sure and by a long shot. But, Im on the Internet, so I have opinions. This is normal looking wear for the mileage. Which is to say, you can see some scratches and what appears to be piston rubbing in the same fashion that would lead to bore scoring in the future. Who know when this would happen. It could never happen, as long as the cylinder material doesnt shed.

@Mike Murphy thanks for the comments. This is what I was thinking as well.

Agreed! This is something all of us DIYrs should do and post images for reference.

POST 8Original post

You created better photos than I did, so what's your secret? I know patience, time and experience all play into this. I did this on my back on jackstands so, probably not ideal. Nicely done.

hey man, my secret was I used to borescope wind turbine gearboxes all the time years ago. This was helpful. The biggest tip I can give besides patience, is make sure the camera is clean and free of oil. Enjoy!
