Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I drained and filled the hydraulic pump that operates the top behind the rear seats and that didn't seem to help at all.
Leading evidence: 'Fill hydraulic pump' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill hydraulic pump' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I could replace the pump, but hate to spend $1000 if that's not the problem and it's a microswitch somewhere.

When I press the button (or use the key), it will come up a couple inches, I'll hear some clicking relays and then it stops.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I've had my 996 TT for a few years now and late last year, when I closed the top, the top dash light would come on, blink 3 times and under the speedo it would say "Convertible top not in limit position". The top was fully closed and latched, but the windows did not go up like it didn't complete the cycle. I didn't worry about it since I could press the OK stick and just the dash light would remain on and I could ignore it.
Now, the top doesn't want to go up all the time. When I press the button (or use the key), it will come up a couple inches, I'll hear some clicking relays and then it stops. Sometimes it doesn't move at all. If I do it enough times, it seems to get to a spot where it will go all the way up and error out after it latches. I drained and filled the hydraulic pump that operates the top behind the rear seats and that didn't seem to help at all. I could replace the pump, but hate to spend $1000 if that's not the problem and it's a microswitch somewhere.
My code reader doesn't drill down far enough to see the code that it's throwing. Had a body shop owner use his Snap-On code reader and it wouldn't let him see the codes kept timing out, but it could operate the top, windows, etc. We did notice the voltage on Potentiometer 1 is less than 1, unlike Potentiometer 2 (see picture). I'm not sure what the values should be. I'm 1.5 hours away from any dealers so I would like to fix it myself.
I have no trouble opening the top. It unlatches, the cover slides back, top goes down and completes the cycle with the windows doing up and the dash light comes off.
Does anyone know what relay controls the convertible top and a part number? I can't find it listed anywhere and it's not the double relay google points me to under the dash. I hear the clicking behind the seats where those relays are, but nothing is labeled convertible top. Also, if I have to buy more of a professional code reader, I'd like to get your opinions on which one to get. Would the Porsche Durametric code reader work for this? I would like to lean towards one that does more than just Porsche.
Thanks for the help!
I'm guessing its one of two things.
A) one of the microswitches has gone bad
B) you need to run a top calibration
The durametric can calibrate your top. Unfortunately, you need a PIWI (Porsche's diagnostic tool). To view the individual microswitches in the top.

Thanks. I was afraid that nothing I can get would identify individual micro switches. Do you know if the durametric would be able to identify if the pump was faulty? I'm guessing it would throw a code if I'm in the process of raising the top and it stops and errors out.
The pump itself does not usually fail. The durametric will not tell you the pump has failed. You will get a timeout error code but that's very nonspecific.
You can apply power directly to the pump to see if it works. If the top is moving at all it suggests the pump is ok. the "top limit position error" suggests a calibration error or an issue with the resistor switch which tells the computer where the top is located
