Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Installed a double DIN Kenwood stereo last week. The supplied surround is too small. Instead of making one from ABS, I thought I would make one from 0.160" aluminum. Had one of my machinists whip one up yesterday. It breaks up the dash which is a bit monochrome and matches the aluminium finish elsewhere, but I not 100% sure. It's lightly brushed, but I am thinking a more aggressive finishing like 120 grit to provide more texture. Am thinking maybe getting it black anodized. Curious to know what people think. All feedback welcome, including haters

POST 3Original post

Looks great! Black anodized What is the color of your car? could match it on the surround? What was the cost? it might be a cool thing to sell to others

POST 4Original post

Looks good IMHO. Although it might fit in a bit better if you added something else on the dash... that matched so it wasn't the only aluminum piece on the interior.

POST 5Original post

Looks good the way it is, matches the shifter. Nice job.

POST 6Original post

looks great...one for the A/C surround would tie it up nicely.

POST 7Original post

Looks nice Fergus, but I agree that the horseshoe should be aluminum too. Also, it would be nice to have the face of the head unit sit flush with the opening. I see that yours is recessed a little bit. I'm not sure what's involved in that change, but mine was flush when I had my Kenwood head unit installed.

POST 9Original post

Looks good but matte black would match a little better .

POST 10Original post

Looks good but I'm gonna go with black also (& flush mount)... Nice work... FYI, there are a number of companies that make a kit that fits perfectly with the contour of the dashboard (about $100 on eBay)...

POST 11Original post

One thought...call rod at car audio innovations. He makes a double din faceplate for kenwoods that fits great and matches the oe texture, etc. he sells a whole kit, but since i already had the wirinng, he sold me just the faceplate. Was far and away the best of the 3 kits on the market (ive tried them all). Just a thought ...

POST 12Original post

Looks great. You could paint it to match your body color, and get your center console painted as well.

POST 14Original post

Elegant; nice custom work. I do however agree that black anodized would look more consistent.

POST 15Original post

Besides all the talk about finishes, I would like to say it looks GREAT! Your guy did a great job!

POST 16Original post

Very nice. 120grit brushed black anodized is my vote too.
