Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So just one I thought I'd share in the last 24 hours... Left London yesterday (Friday) after work, 5pm in my 2003 C2 Cab. The car is new to me, I've only done a few hundred miles in it and no long journeys so I had a little apprehension about this trip... Anyway, down to the channel tunnel and onto the train at 7pm, hit Calais in France 8:30 local time and drove through the night to Martigny in Switzerland with my wife, arrived there 6am and 1,000 km (around 600 miles) later. The French motorways were busy, even at 4am as everyone headed south, but the traffic was free flowing and a steady 85mph was easy (about the speed limit there). Over into Switzerland the traffic eased. An hours rest and breakfast and then over the Alps into Italy on the Grand St Bernard's pass (this is the one that the opening sequence of the original Italian Job was filmed on with the Miura, no bulldozers in tunnels this time thankfully). Without doubt the most stunning and beautiful road I've every been on... Down into Italy, a 2 hour motorway drive playing with a Swiss registered white 991 up to 145mph on empty motorways, top down, 34 degrees C (93 deg F)...and to a beautiful hotel near Barolo where the owner was waiting with a bottle of rather decent wine and cold swimming pool by noon today. And the car didn't miss a beat. 1,350km, 19 hours. And now two weeks touring Italy, top down...

Beautiful trip with your car, thanks for sharing!

POST 3Original post

Gorgeous car and very nice scenery! I was nervous about my trip to Chicago from Florida when I first purchased my car, but she performed flawlessly Unfortunately I think you encountered a more picturesque landscape. I had to put up with cornfields on I-57

POST 4Original post

+1. Awesome trip. I want to drive all of those European mountain roads in one go some day. A month with a car, driving non-stop. No phone, completely off the grid.

POST 5Original post

Color me jealous! I have driven in Italy several times but in a rental car. Would be great in a 996. Enjoy!!

POST 6Original post

Thanks for taking the time to share such a nice experience in a wonderful car.Good memories

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've done the rental car thing here many times but this is different...and it's created a real bond with the car now. As an aside, I was trying to think what car I'd choose, cost no object, to do an 800 mile motorway run then twisty mountain roads whilst carrying two people and luggage for two weeks away. And then be the perfect convertible driving along the coast on arrival...I'm not sure what, other than a 911, could come close. Jaguar F type maybe? Exotic mid engined cars rarely have the luggage space and often are the best on long motorway drives. Maybe Audi R8. Not many others...

POST 9Original post

I've done the rental thing a few times too. I rented a 991 C4S cabriolet last fall and drove it through Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. Stelvio Pass was very exciting in a Porsche!

POST 12Original post

Thanks for taking the time to share! Great imagery!

POST 13Original post

Very nice! Thanks for sharing with us. I just recently purchased my 996 c2 and will be traveling across the U.S. with it...not nearly as nice scenery, but maybe someday.

I think my rental was a diesel Seat station wagon.

POST 15Original post

Jealous is far too small of a word to describe how I feel about this thread! Awesome R

POST 16Original post

I've driven to New Jersey, does that count? But seriously. wonderful trip - thanks for sharing.

I'm thinking about Stelvio on the way back...It's a little out of the way but has the advantage of a blast through Germany on the autobahn.....

A few stills from the GoPro (though it's better with sound!)....

Dennis, I'm curious which company you rented the car through in Germany? One of these days I'll do the same. I'm in Germany often and always wanted to rent a 911. I was always scared to even check the prices though.

I think Sixt have some interesting cars, but these guys have some very nice machinery... http://www.kingrent.com/

I rented from Avis. They had Audi R8s available too. I did this once in 2010 with a 997 C4s cabriolet and then last year with a 991 C4S cabriolet. Great experience.

You should do it! Stelvio is special, and the autobahn blast will be fun too. I hit 265 kph headed back to Stuttgart with the top down! I loved Stelvio Pass in a rental car, but I think it would have been really special in my own car. Glad you're enjoying your Porsche!

Dennis, what was the "deposit" for the C4s rental? I am looking into renting a Ferrari or a Lambo when I am in Monaco in a month, they have "deposits" from $9k up.

POST 25Original post

I don't even remember what it was. They take your credit card and make you agree that you will be responsible for damage up to a certain point. I think it was $2,000. You also have to sign a document that states that you won't take the vehicle on the Nurburgring or you'll have to pay a fine and insurance won't cover any damage sustained on the track.

POST 26Original post

Stewart what a great trip report and I'm especially glad you got thru the tunnel with no issues. I was in the UK (In and about London, Cambridge etc.) and all I kept seeing on the news was how bad the trucks were backed up because of immigration problem. Well onto your trip, I'm glad that you posted it and many of us have chimed in about doing the same in a rental car. I have been on the fence about shipping my car to Europe and living there for a year and just enjoying my car the way it's suppose to be driven. I was stationed in Germany many years ago for over 8 years and drove many of the same roads and byways that you mentioned. At the time I owned a Golf GTI, but now with my C4S, I'd love to go back and relive those journeys and your trip report just made my day. Thanks and safe travels. Cheers

POST 27Original post

That had to have been an amazing drive. Thank you for sharing some photos. It's been added to my Gotta Do list

POST 28Original post

Thanks for the info Dennis, I'll look into it a bit more now.

POST 29Original post

Doing a great drive in a rental car is awesome...but a great drive in your own 911 is even better. The 996 is a great GT car - even mine, with its really stiff suspension, eats the miles like a champ. I envy that drive.

But wasn't it PJ O'Rourke that pointed out that the fastest car in the world is a rental car...?

I'm up near Cambridge too when I'm home :-) I was worrying about the delays and tunnel but it seemed to clear up a few days before my trip...drove straight through and even got onto an earlier train. It certainly builds a bond and respect doing it in your own car.
