Suggestion
A couple of my rims have some curb damage, so the shop told me they will repair the damage and then machine the lips.

Cheaper to just replace than re-finish this wheel?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Seriously? Uh... NO! It'll probably only cost you $200 or so to refinish - the only potential problem being that the refinished wheel looks better (or slightly different) than the other three...Just DO IT !
Refinishing is probably the better choice since you know the wheel does not leak air, is straight and true and it coat less. May have to refinish the other wheel on that side of the car to get the color to match. Try to avoid disassembling the wheel as it may leak after assembly. Be sure the correct Porsche silver metallic is used, which may be 61M.
I had mine refinished and insisted they be disassembled to be done properly (not masked and painted). They can't leak. They aren't 3 piece wheels. They are 2 piece and the bolts just hold the face of the wheel to the one piece rim.
BTW, the first place I took them refused to disassemble due to leakage liability. They made the same mistake - because they do appear to be made like a 3 piece wheel.
^^^ To be done properly, they need to be disassembled - If the shop doesn't know that, take it to another shop - any shop worth it's salt knows how to deal with these BBS wheels (and has probably done many, many others)...
yes, it is a two piece rim and leaks are not a problem. These are not the most desirable rims but I'd like to stick with them. The clear coat is starting to fail.
I am getting all four of the exact same wheels refinished next week (a bit of corrosion on the polished lips and mirror face damage). Can anyone confirm that the paint colour forifor these rims is Silver Metallic 61M? I sent pictures to the refinisher and he thought they might be hypersilver but he wasn't sure. I bet as soon as he sees them in person he will know the exact colour but it would be good to have beforehand. Thanks in advance.
I went through all of the 996 colours on Rennbow and determined Meteor Grey Metallic was the best and closest to gun metal grey. Colour codes are LM7W, 9Q, 961 or LY7Z from the Rennbow site. I decided to refinish mine in the original silver (boring I and predictable) but I like the look. Wheels will be done on Friday, looking forward to the rims looking brand new again.
I have this exact wheel that came on my 2002 Cab. I've owned it for not quite two weeks. The last owner said he "had them refinished in gunmetal". I have hand washed the car twice and the paint is coming off rather quickly, exposing the OEM silver finish beneath.. It is still glossy underneath, basically no prep - so it appear to be time for me to PROPERLY get them refinished. I was planning to separate the wheels myself and then have the centers powdercoated in a gunmetal finish of my choosing. The last owner also painted the lip and bolts. I was planning to sand and eventually polish to a mirror shine myself while I have the wheels apart. Any reason I should go with paint versus powdercoat? What do you all do to match the centercaps? Mask the emblem and have the whole thing painted to match? You can't quite tell from this pic but these caps do not match the paint. They look alright, but they are definitely lighter. They are not as light as the original silver that is underneath the failing gunmetal paint.
There is a recent thread on this topic but I can't find it just now. Evidently, BBS does not sell those bolts or publish torque specs for them because they do not want anyone disassembling the wheels (for safety reasons). I think your best bet is to take it to wheel refinisher who is familiar with BBS wheels. They will likely clean up the existing bolts for you or source new ones, and will know the appropriate torque specs.
BTW - thanks for publishing the photo of gunmetal wheels on a black 996. It confirms that is an awesome wheel color for my black coupe, even though I have hollow twists. I think I'll paint my rim lips instead of polishing them, because I think it makes the wheel look bigger when it's all one color.
Refinished painted Wheels
Got my car back with the refinished wheels. They look brand new. The paint color is slightly darker then they were before but looks great. The shop painted my center caps to match the wheels. I went with painted faces because the powder coater in my area does not provide a lot of color choice. The machines and polishe lips look fantastic, a huge improvement from before. Total cost for repainting the faces, machining the lips, painting the center caps, cleaning the barrels and mount and balance was $1,330 CAD.
Need some new lug nuts now so I can get rid of the rusted wheel locks.
Love to see another BC aerokit car.
Inspired to toss my Sport Designs on. I've never run them (came w the car). I had the car up on the lift anyways and thought I'd try em out.
Reviving this thread after I just finished the refinishing project. Separated the wheels and stripped all the titanium fasteners of their shoddy paint job. Had the wheels, including the lip powder coated in a gunmetal finish. Had the tires reinstalled and popped in these takeoff black center caps I sourced online. The old ones were beat and nothing was going to match this color unless I paint match them. I like them black to be honest and I'll be leaving this way to put back on my black cab pictured above.
Look good. Do you or does anyone know if the centers are interchangeable? Did they look the same when you had them disassembled?
So it looks like they might be, what the offsets would be if they were switched, say from a 7 1/2" to a 9" or 10" wheel barrel?
The centers are interchangeable, I recently purchased a car that had had it's wheels rebuilt and the wheel rebuilder inadvertently swaped the front a rear wheel centers of two wheels.
