Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Got into my '99 Porsche C2 this am , started it up and a huge plume of smoke came out along with a nasty sound that I have never heard before. Oil on the garage floor, and the engine sound is similar to a tin can with marbles in it. So, I restarted the engine, more smoke and noise, even after revving the engine for 10 minutes or so. I drove it to work (35 miles) in the snow. My transmission is barely engaging any gear without crunching and the clutch is so hard to engage. Dash lights are blinking along with CEL and as I approached my office, I slid into my bosses new BMW and damaged my front end and his driver's side completely, and he witnessed the whole thing.

Are you sure it wasn't a nightmare!! Holy crap! Sorry to hear. But hey no one got hurt !

POST 3Original post

Things could be worse. At least you didn't sell the 996 for an air-cooled.

POST 6Original post

If its not an April fools joke, its going to be a bad day for this fellow. Those are classic symptoms of an IMS failure and this car WAS capable of being saved with an IMS retrofit procedure if it had not been "Driven to Death". If you hear noise, see smoke or have any misbehavior from the engine STOP, SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND DO NOT START IT AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Have the engine looked at by someone who knows and understands the M96 and don't even allow them to start it for diagnosis. Here seconds count and 10 seconds of run time can cost 15,000 bucks. To have a day this bad it almost has to be an April Fools joke. I hope that it is, otherwise the original poster should be ringing us up ASAP.

Steve.... ya might want to call it a day - but be careful going home early..... ya know, when the wife isnt expecting you funny, ya got me for a minute

POST 11Original post

I knew it as soon as he recognized the dreaded IMS failure symptoms yet STILL re-started it and ran it! Good one though!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just trying to capture some of the 996 'issues' we have all read about, and inject a little humor at Porsche ownership on April Fools Day.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
