Here in Canada where DRL are mandatory, all my previous cars used the high beam run at half power for the DRL...very effective imo.
Leading evidence: 'Use high beam' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace standard h3 halogens' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I've tried using LED bulbs to replace the standard H3 halogens but they weren't anywhere near bright enough and they died after 6 months.

Suggestion
I made the daytime running light hack on my 986 since it's required by law in sweden to have the lights on at all time.

Suggestion
As far as LEDs vs halogen, yes, they don't have the same effective light output using the reflector/lens combo in your 9x6 headlights, but product far less heat and thus a lower likelihood for plastic discoloration when on all the time.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
I came across this on a 986 forum a while back and was wondering if anybody did the DRL hack on their 996.
The hack is connecting the fog light relay to the fog light fuse using a single jumper wire with fuse taps and disconnects.
Many people switch from the halogen H3 bulb to an LED bulb to avoid yellowing on the lenses and a brighter "present day" light output. I've only seen this in person on a 996.1, but i'm sure theres 02+ models with the hack as well.
Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts?
No I agree, personally I think it would be out of place...
But on the turbo's it does look nice.
Just want to hear people's opinions. My fogs are upgraded halogens but not DRL's. LED's are stupid, and have absolutely zero visibility.
the point of DRLs is to make you more visible during the day. There have been numinous studies that show they are effective in preventing some accidents. No, I don't have links for them, I read them years ago before Al Gore invented the internet.
As far as LEDs vs halogen, yes, they don't have the same effective light output using the reflector/lens combo in your 9x6 headlights, but product far less heat and thus a lower likelihood for plastic discoloration when on all the time.
The reflector/lens were designed for a specific lamp emitting light in a specific way. Most LEDs output light differently
Can you use LEDs as headlight replacements, probably not, for the fogs, especially as DRLs they are great
The purpose of DRL's is for you to be seen from a fair distance, the low and wide beam pattern of fog lights would not be a good fit.
I jumpered the high side of the seat heating fuse to the street/parking lights which also powers the W5W, euro DRL bulb in the headlight assembly.
Whatever works for you
IMHO, fog light are fairly useless for pure illumination. The parking lights are better? If its the bulb I am thinking about, in Mk2 lights they just give the headlight a little glow, they have no projection at all. Mk1 lights don't have it at all
As far as using hi-beams for DRLs NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. They blind people even in the day. That's a really inconsiderate thing to do.
I find my LED fogs work just fine and make my silver car much easier to see
Here in Canada where DRL are mandatory, all my previous cars used the high beam run at half power for the DRL...very effective imo. My 03 C2 uses the low beam at full power for the DRL which is equally as effective but burns through the $100 HID bulbs a little faster. AFAIK there's no way to turn them off completely with the car running..
Not a fan of DRL's. Now that "everybody" has them they really don't offer any real benefit, other than give another driver something to aim for.
And I get a mite ticked off when dusk falls and bozos are driving around with their DRL's on as if that's good enough. Ditto in the rain. If the wipers are on turn on the damn headlights! The real things, not the goofy DRL's.
BTW, the fog lights on my 996 Turbo are useless. Really the bi-xenon lights are so good fog lights are for show. (Now the fog lights on my Boxster are not useless, but pretty good in fog. 'course, the plain old headlights are not nearly as good as the bi-xenon in my Turbo and the Boxster needs all the help it can get in the lighting department.)
If you need DRL's just turn on the headlights. Low beam!
DRL, were never for show, they exist to help your car stand out a little more in the daytime, clearly better than a car without them....function over form. That said, I'm not a big fan of them either and yes, especially at dusk, many people forget to turn on their real headlights because they think they're already on when driving.........
Mine has had the fog lights wired as DRL since it came over from the US to Canada. Much cheaper to replace those bulbs (twice in the last 9 years) than xenon bulbs!
Mine too. I've tried using LED bulbs to replace the standard H3 halogens but they weren't anywhere near bright enough and they died after 6 months.
I either use the standard H3 halogen bulbs (for ~$5 each) which last quite a few years, or upgrade to the super-white H3 halogen bulbs for several times the price. The super-white H3 bulbs (ie by PIAA) only seem to last about a year for me as DRL.
I'm with Pongo - my '02 has been configured the same way and works fine.
- no yellowing of lenses so far
- the dash lights don't come on so by nightfall headlights are put on if you want to see your display or at least that works for me
- I agree that high beams even during daylight hours aren't responsible
- fog lamps in the daytime provide plenty of attention for oncoming traffic at reasonable distances. I don't think they do anything for me...but then my headlights don't do a heck of a lot for me in daylight either.
