I guy I worked with who has a 914 with a 993 engine in the car installed a larger oil cooler, one up front.

He ran big lines to/from the cooler and the thing works pretty good.

Suggestion
Instead of condenser lines, I'm replacing it with AN-10 fittings..It's a complete drop-in solution, and all you have to do is run the lines to the back..

Suggestion
If you used copper pipe for the f/r connection, that would dump even more heat.
Use simple,high volume(not high pressure) ,electric pump(+thermoswitch)

for your front-mounted ,oil-cooler proposal - tap the deep sump and use a simple, high volume(not high pressure) ,electric pump(+thermoswitch) to circulate the loooong way to&fro the front cooler.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

He said he will take for a tour of the shop and meet the guys that worked with him at Andial.
I fabricate them in house and make two runs per year. I only sell them with engines, as part of the Stage II Plus arrangement.
The stock oil pump won't make the grade with all the added hose length. I couple these to my high volume pump, or use them with my dry sump system.
Just out of curiosity, why? [question from 996PP]
The engine will be a 4.0 liter and will be run in the Central Valley of California [read that as "hot as Hades in summer"].
The oil pump will be upgraded along with swirl pots, etc. Dwaine at Vision Motorsports is doing the engine build.
Would be easier I think to add a 3rd radiator. This is what Porsche does to deal with the extra heat load from higher performance engines, like found in for example the 996 Turbo. (And in all models equipped with a Tip/PDK transmission.)
After speaking with the mechanic, he suggested since the radiators will be new CSF units and there will be a deeper oil sump, higher capacity/pressure oil pump, swirl pots, etc., more cooling of the oil would benefit the engine more than another water radiator.
Then an oil cooler it is. Big lines are required and a t-stat to avoid overcooling the oil. The lines want to be routed so they do not rub or flop about. Lose an oil line to an oil cooler and you can kiss the engine goodbye.
I guy I worked with who has a 914 with a 993 engine in the car installed a larger oil cooler, one up front. He ran big lines to/from the cooler and the thing works pretty good.
The only downside, so to speak, is the oil cooler and lines just about doubled the engine's oil capacity, to something around 16 quarts.
If you want a good oil cooler you might see what the air-cooled crowd runs.
dwdunn,
I have been pondering this for my M96 build .
This subject has been discussed at length in the past and Macster had the best recdtns ,shown above.
If you don't already have a 3rd coolant radiator, do it.Porsche did.
The oil pump upgrade - it would be interesting to see specs for this. Do you have them?Is it a supplementary pump or an upgrade substitute for the OEM?
The deep sump will help with spikes in oil temp if the oil is being circulated quickly. Is it a +2qt. system?
As a
wild idea
for your front-mounted ,oil-cooler proposal - tap the deep sump and use a simple, high volume(not high pressure) ,electric pump(+thermoswitch) to circulate the loooong way to&fro the front cooler. If you used copper pipe for the f/r connection, that would dump even more heat.
If you are worried about the thermal degradation of shear of the oil &/or foaming- that can be ameliorated by careful oil selection(separate thread!)
I would not tap into the sump for oil to the oil cooler. My concern would be that under some situations this could cause the oil level to drop to a point the engine's high pressure oil pump would suck air instead of oil.
My preference would be to have the oil for the cooler supplied as part of the regular oil system circuit. While this would possibly require some upgrading of the engine's basic oil system -- larger capacity pump, etc. -- this seems the safer way to go.
One could look at how the oil to the factory supplied oil cooler (oil/water heat exchanger) was supplied oil and use that technique to supply the new/aftermarket oil cooler.
However, I'm no oil cooler expert. The oil cooler manufacturer should have some recommendations regarding how to supply the oil to the cooler, and I would rely upon what the oil cooler maker had to say in this regard. Proper plumbing of an oil cooler is not the place to learn by experimenting with one's engine.
The long story of this is that Vision Motorsports is going to build the engine and they have an option for a GT3 oil cooler. Maybe I am assuming too much here as to this 'oil cooler' being front mounted. I would think it would be to be very effective.
When I meet with Dwaine @ Vision, we will go over things such as this before the build starts.
I had the engine removed by the local Porsche shop and they also took the heads off to assess the damage. Scored cylinder walls from the shrapnel was evident when opened.
I will trailer the engine down to Laguna Hills, meet with Dwaine and discuss the build over lunch.
He said he will take for a tour of the shop and meet the guys that worked with him at Andial.
I have complete confidence in Vision Motorsports. Like an article in 'Excellence' magazine said, "Dwaine Dement [as shop manager for Andial for many years] oversaw the build of some of the most dominant Porsche engines in race history". Vision Motorsports has a complete race support division and they build their own race cars.
Dwaine is so busy I don't like to bother him with all of the questions I have. I will wait until I meet him at lunch, ask all the questions and then hand him the check to start the build!
I am crossing my fingers that the money for this will come available next month
Kind of related to this topic.. I'm working on an oil cooler for Boxster/cayman spec race cars which is identical in size to one of the AC condensers.. Instead of condenser lines, I'm replacing it with AN-10 fittings..It's a complete drop-in solution, and all you have to do is run the lines to the back..
This might be something that you should consider? Maybe get a Setrab unit, and weld brackets to the AC mounting pins.. Of course, you may loose 1/2 of your AC capibilities, but it's an idea..
)Sorry if I compleltley misread this thread.. Jetlagged in a hotel during my travesl and passing time
