The way the dealership calculated it for me was a set price for the IMS and a set price for the clutch and added them together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Question(s): I have asked for a quote to get the following fixed at my local official Porsche garage
1) New Clutch and IMS bearing swap
2) New full exhaust system and
3) New Brakes all around (the full job)
I was quoted CHF 12'000 for the full job (USD 13'000 / GBP 8'200) which is a bit of money in any circumstance of course, but my questions are:
1. Not commenting on the actual cost, It's about of what I paid for the car 2 years ago. Is it worth putting this into it?
2. The clutch I guess still have some life left in it but I do not know if it ever has been changed or not and it's the IMS issue that still lurks in the back of my head. The clutch catches at around 2/3rd's from the fully pressed to way up
3. The Exhaust looks bright and shiny (at least what I can see from outside when the car is parked) and it does sound ok, maybe a little hollow at times when revving it...
So, what is the general feel in here? Should I only get the Brakes and Clutch done as these are more of a safety issue or just get it fixed when it need's to be done?
The car has gone 95'000 km = 60'000 miles and I'm taking it for the yearly smaller service as it had the big one last year without any comments from the Porsche mechanic...
Pointers and thoughts are very much welcome in deed...
My plan is to keep the car for as long as possible because I actually love it to bits and it's extremely well kept since day one of what I can see...
Way too much. I went to the dealer for the price for the IMS and clutch. They wanted about $6000. The way the dealership calculated it for me was a set price for the IMS and a set price for the clutch and added them together. They would not discount the job even though the labor was duplicated for the job. Have them give you a detailed estimate.
I have since learned you can negotiate the prices the dealer charges.
Can you find another garage you trust?
As far as whether it needs done, do the IMS (since it is a concern of yours) with the clutch. But it does not sound like it needs done right away.
Brakes are always expensive if you go to the dealer and they are no different from any other brakes so I would look for another garage to do them. It would not bother me if they were not a Porsche specialist. They are also fairly simple to DIY with lots of good videos on the internet.
Sorry - missed the comment on not commenting on the cost.
I am going to change my answer. If you plan on keeping the car forever, I would do the IMS and clutch and brakes if needed but let the exhaust sit until it is gone.
Why do you want to "get them fixed" ? Is this a preventative maintenance thing? You don't mention your ability to DIY so I'll just assume that it is NOT an option.
1) Brakes - well, if you need them, that's a no brainer - get 'em done.
2) Exaust - = "Bright and shiny"... ??? Do you just want a different exaust? If the entire system is "good" and you just want to change the "note" - start with the mufflers... Everyone seems to like the "Fister D" mod, and it's inexpensive. The next step would be something like Fabspeed's or Tubi's or...
3) Cutch and IMSB - If you've got to do the IMSB for peace of mind, you may as well have the clutch done at the same time, as you'll save on labor by doing them together.
***I won't comment on the price you were quoted, as you asked for no comment... It would be VERY GOOD IDEA to get a couple more prices
Thanks for the feedback guys...
@dporto,
this is Switzerland and everything is VERY expensive.
Think I'll stick to the Brakes for the time being and maybe get the clutch done a little later. Was told to test by putting it in 3rd and let the clutch off easy and if it pops I need a new clutch otherwise I'm good...
When I Used to live in Zurich I just drove the short distance to Konstanz or Freiburg i.Br. in Germany. The repairs are 40-60% less than in ZH, even if you have to stay in a hotel or leave the car and pick it up later. Freiburg has great Porsche indies.
No reason to replace the clutch unless it is slipping or grabbing or making a horrible screech when you push down on the clutch pedal.
For a "clutch test" just drive the car around until everything is warmed up then in 4th gear at around 3K RPMs nail the gas pedal to the floorboard. Let the engine accelerate the car. If the clutch is weak it will slip. If it slips, it will need replacing. No need to test this again.
Why do you need the full exhaust system fixed? Is it damaged? Leaking? Loose?
If the brake warning light on? Are the brakes making bad noises? Pulsing? Are the rotors cracked, or heat damaged?
Unless the brakes are manifesting clear signs of problems there is no need to have them replaced.
The brake fluid needs to be flushed/bled every two years (and the clutch fluid, too), so be sure this is kept up to date.
If you need the brakes done, figure around $1000/axle (dealer price). At least this is what it cost for my 996 Turbo for the front brakes. I had them replaced after the brake wear warning light came on. The brakes lasted around 120K miles.
I do not know what a clutch job would cost. Neither of my Porsches has yet required a new clutch. The Boxster clutch is original with over 288K miles on it, and the Turbo clutch is original with over 131K miles on it. At around 120K miles I had the tranny out for a new RMS and the clutch disc had no measurable wear.
Driven right these clutches can last a long long time.
Take the car in for its scheduled service. Ask the tech to advise you what else the car might need. If he needs to road test the car so be it. If the brakes, clutch, exhaust system or anything else needs attention he'll let you know.
Two weeks ago in France : less than 3.500 € for :
. RMS
. IMS replacement (LN)
. Clutch
. Rear pads and rotors
. Rear tires (Pzero N)
Hope this helps.
@Macster, thanks for your post.
This makes a lot of sense and I will follow your advise. You may have saved me for a great bundle of cash as I have a tendancy to get carried away at times when I get an idea in my head.
I'll buy you drink if you should come to the French speaking part of Switzerland...
You are welcome.
Just so it is clear, I subscribe to the philosophy of it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I do pay what I think is close attention to what my cars are saying to me all the time. And because I drive quite a bit and the cars get serviced often (several times a year each) they both get checked out very carefully when in for any service. So if something is acting up it gets noticed before it gets too much more serious and it gets taken care of.
However, there are some who do things differently and perhaps more preventative work is better for them.
IOWs, tailor how you maintain/service the car, what preventative maintenance you have done, how aggressive you are regarding replacing wear items, that matches you and your personality.
Ah Switzerland....I wish I could return to Switzerland, any part of it. I was there a few years ago on business, staying just outside of Zurich in Opfikon. Business required a drive to Berne and a day trip to the Paul Scherrer Institute near Villigen. (Then after about a week there business required I go on to the Netherlands and the UK.)
I loved Switzerland and the people were so nice. If I had to work or retire in Europe I would choose Switzerland.
