Suggestion

I wipe the rubber bellow with Aerospace 303 protectant, and lubricate the gear mechanism with a bit of white lithium grease sprayed into the access holes on the gear housing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I can't see the spoiler when driving, therefore, I've never actually known whether the spoiler actually extends at the preset speed and I've always wanted to find out (ridiculous I know) So, I attached a GoPro to see the spoiler in action. The first part of the video has a Fister Sports Exhaust-enhanced acceleration through a tunnel. Unfortunately, the GoPro's microphone is seriously lacking, therefore everything sounds pretty rubbish.

POST 2Original post

any chance you forgot to upload the video? or a link perhaps?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fixed - I pasted in the entire URL rather than just the video ID in the YT tag.

POST 4Original post

I had my wife drive the car while I followed. Told her to take it up to 75 and the wing rose at about 65, lowered at 35. Pretty trick!

POST 5Original post

I've been considering a fixed duck tail, but this little gizmo is super cool...

POST 6Original post

You do realize that you can also raise and lower the wing from the toggle switch on the front of the fuse box near your left foot don't you? So you can have the wing up from start. It may go back down if you take it to 75mph and back to the 30s mph. Not sure on that score or if it stays up all the time after you manually use it.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hurdi - yes ad I've used that switch to verify operation of the spoiler. I just wanted to see the speed dependent operation in action

POST 8Original post

Nice! I've always wondered (since I got my car anyway) what it looked like...now I know

POST 9Original post

I have only been able to verify on a sunny day by driving in the fast lane and looking at the shadow against the center median. Nice silhouette it creates

POST 10Original post

I can see the top 1/2" of spoiler in the rear view mirror.

POST 11Original post

Hurdi has brought up one of my questions. On my 2005 996 C4S when I put the wing up per instructions with the switch(wife thinks it is cuter that way even though I explained German engineering!) it seems to have a mind of it's own. Even when I don't go above 75mph it might stay up for a few trips around town or it may go back down within a few miles or one or two restarts. Spoiler works quietly and smoothly. Seems to have no logical consistent operation. I can't find any info written anywhere! Anybody understand this function? Agree with Ditto I can see the spoiler in mirror when it's up.

POST 12Original post

The way it should work is: Hit switch, spoiler is up u til you shutoff the car, spoiler stays up with ignition off Fire the car back up, exceed the spoiler retraction speed, then drop below that speed (roughly 35 mph) and it should go down and then operate normally. If yours doesn't exhibit that behavior something could be wrong but I have no idea what that something could be.

I can't or maybe I've not tried hard enough. I have a cab perhaps that's why? Also I specifically wanted to see it work automagically and knowing me, if I could see it in the mirror I'd get transfixed and hit something at 75mph... :/

POST 14Original post

DTM Thanks. That is what is happening! I have a problem keeping this thing at/below the retract speed even around town where the speed limit is 35mph. Maybe I can tell the policeman "I was just trying to keep my spoiler from retracting." when stopped for going a "little" to fast.

POST 16Original post

In my 99 C2 coupe, I can just see the rear lip of the spoiler at the bottom of my rear window when it is raised.

POST 17Original post

I have the cab and can't see mine from the driving seat. It does work however as my wife followed me in her car for verification.

POST 18Original post

I remember seeing the spoiler go up 15 years ago on a 996 passing me, then it retracted once the traffic flow slowed down. Thought it was the coolest thing, now I also have a car that does it!

POST 19Original post

I can't see mine so the way I've verified it is by driving next to a dark-colored SUV and look over or a reflective semi truck. Speaking of the wing, how many of you perform preventative maintenance on it?

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What preventative maintenance is advocated? I've put Einszett Gummi Pflege on the rubber from time to time, but that's it.

POST 23Original post

I wipe the rubber bellow with Aerospace 303 protectant, and lubricate the gear mechanism with a bit of white lithium grease sprayed into the access holes on the gear housing.

Yup that's the answer! You're kidding, right? You mean to say, "Wait you guys ONLY drive 75?" Honestly I don't know how anyone did it back in the 1970s-early 1990s when 55 MPH was the national limit. OMG it must have been a snoozefest! I think most highways today should be 80+ MPH unless there is congestion or weather issues.
