It is still on the engine stand 12 years later waiting to be installed back to the original car.

Suggestion
Drop the oil and check it and the filter for any metal ,remove the sump plate and again check any debris ,,,,,,,going to be much cheaper to rebuild if the engine dose not have a catastrophic failure ..

BTW, I went to the Post Office then on a 15 min romp, engine ran good, turned it to red-line, didn't blow-up

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought my 99 C2 Coupe in 2007 as a roller 100k miles, engine out in a basket disassembled. To keep the wife from bitching that I bought a Porsche without mentioning it to her, and to get it on the road fast, I bought a 50k core engine from a shop in Atlanta that had an intermix confirmed as a cracked head, for $2250. I put the 100k mile top end on the 50K miles short block and installed in the car to drive.
While driving the car and smoothing things over with the wifey, I rebuilt the basket engine, having the cracked heads fixed, new cylinders (iron clad) in the bottom end, new bearings ect. all the while your in there things. It is still on the engine stand 12 years later waiting to be installed back to the original car.
The car now has 177k miles on it, engine has 177k miles on the top end and 127k miles on the bottom end, and is the current "Smiles per Mile $" leader in the Smiles per Mile$ thread at 14cents per mile.
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...ht=Smiles+Mile
The car has never let me down, made a strange noise, never smoked on start up (except when my AOS failed and almost hydrolocked the engine). I DD it, track it, take it to redline almost daily (retired).
Last night as I was going to dinner, the car felt unusually smooth, quiet, strong, free revving to red line with the pleasant Banshee Scream from the Intake.( custom intake)
As I was contemplating why the engine was running so well when I had done nothing to it to justify, the Old Wives Tale of "An engine runs best right before it blows" came to mind. I shook it off being a 40+ year Technician, there is no evidence to support this Wives Tale.
I have always just regarded people who claim this Tale as similar to when a guy gets dumped by his GF, he thinks she was the best and the one that got away.
If you followed any of my posts, you will know that I have been a dealership Technician for 40+ years, raced for decades in high powered cars, hand built engines that set Records, and have developed a 6th sense for engine stress, like Christian Bale/Ken Miles said in Ford V Ferarri, I can "feel" when she can take more!!
But last nite the "feeling" that the engine had gotten mysteriously smoother, quieter, stronger had me a bit perplexed.
Is the "Smiles per Mile $" leader fix'n to blow? Are the Porsche Gods F**king with me? Is it my "Old Man" medicine making me loose my 6th since?
I guess time will tell !!!

Not to mention explaining it to the wife
Hope this work out positive for you ...
Yea, I got Tow Ins, on my State Farm
Thanks man Sally is a pleasure to drive and still turns heads after 21 years and 177k miles..
yea, It's about time to peek in there again, I do it periodically. Do you think she is fix'n to blow?
I never was a genius in her eyes (2nd wifey), we divorced in 2011, and she died last year from Alzheimer's. But she did finally get to liking the Porsche after a few trips to the Tail of the Dragon for a few weekends trips.
Sounds like you believe in the "runs best right before it blows" feeling?
Man! Are you trying to Jinx yourself? You shouldn't be thinking such things, let alone saying them out loud. Ever heard of a little god called Hephaestus? You just woke his butt up and he's gonna need a sacrifice.
Get the new motor ready.
I don't have your experience in repairing stuff, but I do believe the fastest just before the end. I have experienced that from R/C nitro cars(two stroke), dirt bikes(two stroke), racing karts(two stroke) and 360 sprint cars(not two stroke). Don't know why but I have felt it, heard it and, ultimately and unfortunately, experienced it! I don't know if it's a lean out deal on the two strokes or rod stretch or what. I hope you are wrong and it was just favorable atmospheric conditions or aliens.
Keep us advised.
My vote is your subconscious is fishing for another project. Perhaps you should just install a lifetime aos on one of those motors, lol.
But I do know what you mean, had a similar experience the other night. I chalked it up to cold ambient temp and the first time driving the 911 in a week... trying to be a positive possum for a change as I typically assume the worst, particularly with 20 year old sports cars with 100k miles
Not telling you anything you don't already know, but I'd get a good look at the vital signs with a Durametric. Check the sump, if you really suspect something. Hopefully you just experienced that great oneness with the machine. The weather was right, and everything else was in perfect alignment. That magic moment when all is right with the world.
But hey, if not, you've got a plan B. Most of us aren't that well prepared. Hope the magic continues for many more years and smiles/ mile.
I just looked in my rear trunk and found what must be a spare engine in there so looks like I'm also set if/when my engine blows. And its already in the car and not on a stand
The Porsche Gods may be upset that you just developed the Ultimate AOS.
I
DO
believe that they run best right before they blow.
Back in the 1990s I had an SCCA GT3 VW Scirocco. I was in Big Spring Texas racing at the airport. I had raced the same people several times before at this and other venues. I had never placed higher than 3rd. This day I was ahead and was putting down better lap times and they had no chance of catching me...until this happened:
I kept it to remind myself that racing is expensive!
This was a
VERY
expensive Bertil Roos camshaft.
The crank, block, and pistons were also damaged.
The racecar was sold as a roller.
Then about 5 years later, I built this:
It was VERY successful.
Then I replaced it with this:
...as you can see I'm a slow learning.
I finally quit racing just before my first child was born in 1999.
The Lola (#27 of only 46 built) above was sold to someone in Denmark for a LOT more than I had into it.
It was a blessing selling it as I was able to pay off all my debts just before the baby's birth.
My son turns 21 in a couple of months, and now I'm preparing my 996 for occasional track duty.
What an idiot I am!
I believe the doc would just prescribe a couple of "grip it and rips its" and let me know in a few days. Some times our minds mess with us.
As a tech i like to mess with customers when they "think" they have an issue. It's always fun when they come in on the first cold day of the year and say "my left front tire constantly loses air". you spend the time dunking it in the water tank just to find nothing. Then move it to the right rear. Then they come back a week later just to tell you the left front is still losing air....... the mind can be a cruel thing...
Oh this is going to go well....
You: Honey, I have something to tell you, the car is running great, like it has never ran before. I think there is something wrong with it, so I am taking it apart.
Wife: I am calling the rehab place and making you an appointment. Then I am going shopping and on vacations without you.
I had one of those moments with an old outboard motor that would never go fast. I was out with my dad and suddenly it was running great. About ten minutes later I heard a loud clunk and the engine locked up.
Right, Sally has been good to me and I to her. I just want every mile out of it before I drop the new engine in..
No I'm not trying to Jinx myself, just keeping it honest with Sally. "an honest relationship is the best relationship"..I haven't hear of Hephaestus !! I had better read up on him, think I could sacrifice a Briggs&Strattton Opposed Twin Boxer engine instead of a M96 Boxer engine?
I know what your talking about with the 2-smokes, "lean is mean" on those !!!
LOL, yea, it has the UAOS on it already, my subconscious may be trying to tell me something, and it did have "good air" last nite..
Right, Jupiter aligned with Mars and the Moon was in the 7th house !!! Oh yes, I was smilling !!
I agree, I'll check the vitals. I go by the RCM ( Reliability Centered Maintenance) to keep cost down..
The Porsche Gods can't be upset with me, I'm doing what they told me to do !!
I stopped Racing to couch Little League Baseball. It was just as rewarding and a lot less expensive..
Something was sure messing with me !!
My 1st wife wouldn't have thought anything of it. She was used to me working till 3am then get up go work at 7am for days on end, just to gain a few thousands of a second ET.
I love outboards, that's one of my projects before next summer, repower my 24ft pontoon from a 70hp Force, to a 175hp V6 Merc Black Max !! My Grand-kids want to go faster !!
Sounds like you believe in the "runs best right before it blows" feeling?[/QUOTE] Porschetech3
I race open wheelers and every time I have suffered a
catastrophic
engine failure over the years the engine has been at its best right upto the point it fails ...
some people laugh at this and tell me its just me imagining things ,,,but I swear by it being the case ..
Last time it happened to me I had won 4 out of the 5 sprint races on that day .
The last lap of the fifth race I was leading the race and heading for a certain victory and the engine expired at full noise on the last sector of the track with 3 corners to go ................
Yep I am a believer

Uggg , that was a big let-down , last lap of a perfect full sweep !!!!
I dont think an engine would make more power before it blows, but I think it could certainly be at the top if its game in power because the weak link thats about to give is under the most stress at the time.
Now, it could be that the driver is actually the one running better than ever, thereby putting down faster laps and extracting the very most from the engine.
Ive only ever had less than 5 engines start to go bad on me - and they all starting making noise or losing oil pressure, before they started to fail. However, they all seemed to make just as much power in the failure condition as before.
There are also plenty of stories about engine failures from folks just driving normally, but they are often after driving spiritedly not long beforehand.
To the OP: even though the engine feels great, you must be in tune with something else. Perhaps you know the finite lifetime of these engines is not the same as a big rig diesel.
-Maybe this has something to do with it?

NEW MOON
Pisces 428 (
chart
) New Moon in
Pisces: Moon in Pisces has the greatest sensitivity and perceptiveness of surroundings. You can experience feelings of insecurity, be passive and only wait and see what happens in your life. If you engage in creative or spiritual search, you will benefit from great imagination of Pisces.
If you have the same issue I have with ROBO callers trying to sell Used Car Warranties, WELL no time like the present.
Maybe those &^%##%^ will learn a lesson and stop calling people.
I know exactly what is going on -- and you've pointed directly to it above. Its pure science and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that your Motor will grenade sometime between November 9 to the 13th this year. With your heightened sensitivity you are seeing the beginning of the end. But don't worry, you'll forget about it in a while and then as Mars goes into retrograde (in Aries) in the second week of November. Why is this important, you may not ask? Aries had an affair with Aphrodite and she was married to Hepheastus -- so BOOM! You, sir are hosed. Perhaps that sacrificial B&S engine might be a good start for now.
I know all this science may worry you, but at least Mars wont be in Uranus
I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself.
Aries had an affair with Aphrodite !?!? Well that mite explain it....Hephaestus may have poured a few gallons of Nitro in my tank to try and blow up my engine as revenge (I'm an Aries).
As longs as no Mars enters Myanus ( that's exit only !! )
I'll do an oil change and send a sample to the lab to see if any traces of anything that can explain things.
And start locking my fuel lid.
BTW, I went to the Post Office then on a 15 min romp, engine ran good, turned it to red-line, didn't blow-up
My theory is you just can’t believe it’s running so well with so many miles on it. The “nattering nabobs of negativism” have infested you with a generous dose of 996 paranoia. Now even you cannot believe it hasn’t failed yet, there must be something wrong...
Must. Fix. Something!...Must. Fix. Something!...
Oh S**T !! I got a case of "996 Paranoia" !?!? What's the cure? I know, a couple snorts of N20 twice a day !!!
LOL, yea, that went right over my head, I was still in the Greek Mythology mode......
Yep, HAHA. I void warranties!
I also have a "Tavarish" t-shirt that says, "I AM the warranty."
I love wearing that shirt...especially when I buy crap and they try to sell me a warranty.
OK the "996 paranoia" got me to change the oil and filter, and drop the sump. The oil (liquid death) has about 3500 miles on it so it was due. Saved a sample and Am sending to the lab for work-up. Nothing in the sump but a couple small pieces of plastic (chain guides). Looks very good for a 177k mile top end and 127k miles short block. Not so sure every thing is hunky-dory, but I followed the advice of the RL community, your welcome.
Fresh fill of M1 FS X2 5w-50 and back on the road she goes !!!
Sally's sump plate, couple small pieces of plastic
Sally's oil pump screen, yea I see the small piece of plastic, it was picked out
^^^^
Good for you! I hope your engine continues singing for another 100K!!!
My engine was running exceptionally well for an extended period before I lost the valve spring and dropped a valve. 1,700 mile trip, 27 mpg highway, power was on point, things were going good. However, just before the failure, I could feel a loss of power and sense that something wasn't right. 20 miles down the road...things went down hill.
Anyway, that was my experience (round 2 was similar
)
Mike
I'm a little worried now...after teasing you it seems my car is acting up. First thing this morning there was no sound from the radio so I was forced to listen to the engine as drove to work. Wouldn't you know, I started feeling a misfire when idling at the lights, a full miss not just some roughness. And now I swear the car is making funny sounds--I dont know what funny sounds, but I'm pretty sure its some kind of funny sound. Karma is a b#@$%!
I'll never tease you again...until you start a new thread
Yes I remember your experience, very bad case of "bad luck" with infant mortality failure of a "new valve spring breaking" !!!
Glad the shop did the right thing by taking care of it for no charge (as they should have)...
Better check your Horoscope !!!!! Never tease me, I have the Porsche Gods in my corner !!!!
1. If oil pump is broken the engine will make more power since no power is needed to drive it
2. If the waterpump impeller gets loose the engine will make more power since no power is needed to drive it
That's the only two far fetched theories I can think off
Maybe a hole in the block will eliminate any crank pressure?
At that ,mileage,, I'd do a bore scope, and a leak-down on all 6 cylinders.
Not cause I think its gonna break, but to make the car know I care.. They need attention and blood occasionally..
Wait, so now that a car is running great and that is an issue? Great god, when does the madness end.
So if the car is suddenly running like garage, that's better?
I am hoping the best that it's nothing. Good luck.
I do occasional Blow-by tests on Sally. It's quick easy, accurate, and is a good indication of overall health/power.
No change in blow-by + no noise + no increase in oil consumption = good to go !!!!
No, it's just that an unexpected increase in power/smoothness is MUCH more difficult to explain than an unexpected decrease in power/smoothness.( which is what we are use to in fault/failure analysis.)
The car has returned to normal, it's been almost a week, so the logical explanation is just a "Perfect Storm".. All the planets were aligned, the barometric pressure was high, the gravitational pull was low, the air was cool and dense, the oil was at it's most slipperiness, the fuel was at it's most volital, engine timing and ring seal/drag was optimal, and the driver was also in the most sensitive to the surrounding events..That's all I got, oh, and some "996 paranoia" coupled with an "Old Wives Tale"..
Funny you mention that. I bought my car as a roller, and after I rebuilt the engine and turned it back to a runner, I found this little doll in the console. Apparently put there by the previous owner. I keep it there to this day and haven’t had any problem with it since! It works!
it will definitely be with me when I drive to Amelia Island next week.
