Inside the car I removed the 4 disk storage box and installed a single din stereo (fits perfect), and ran 3 RCA cables to a new amp in place of CD changer.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys, I have searched the forums before asking this question as I am sure somewhere someone else had the same query and the members assisted, sorry if I am repeating. I have a 2004 4S with factory navigation and I was thinking of removing the 4 disk storage box and installing a single DIN stereo completely independent of the factory system except the speakers. This way I can maintain the original use of the NAV and all associated features. Would this be possible to accomplish by a do it my-selfer? Thanks Tim

POST 2Original post

I ran a similar setup in my MOST-equipped 986 for a little while. I plugged the factory antenna into the aftermarket HU and used a wired, powered line-level to FM modulator to pipe the audio from the JVC to the Porsche headunit. This was all to avoid messing with the MOST bus (my 986 headunit did not have an aux input). It worked surprisingly well. Since the aerial was not directly connected to the factory HU, and because the modulator was powered and hardwired, there was none of the RF interference common with most RF modulators. Something similar would allow you to use switch between the factory nav setup and your new single-DIN unit.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I solved problem the cheap way. I removed the factory amp and unpinned all the wires from connector then fed the speaker wires back to where the cd changer was. The power leads were taped off as well as the fiber optic wires. Inside the car I removed the 4 disk storage box and installed a single din stereo (fits perfect), and ran 3 RCA cables to a new amp in place of CD changer. Now I have nice sound along with the features that come with a modern deck while retaining all the functions of the original navigation unit and status displays. Easy to do and all looks factory. No wire was cut, photos attached to factory amp would allow the system to be reinstalled without much trouble.
