I can pull my blinker/high beam switch back and see the brights come on. If I push it forward, nothing happens. Is it common for the switch on the stalk to become faulty?

Start with the obvious. Pull the headlight replace the bulb. Good idea to do both sides at the same time. Clean the electrical plugs for the headlights with some electrical cleaner. If that does not work, then you might consider replacing the headlight switch...a well known point of failure.
