Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

996 2002 Targa 85K miles Noticed that when I turn the key at best there is a second or two delay with no sound before it starts. At worst I need to turn off and turn back on once or twice before it starts. I does not seem to turn, it is either silent or starts If after driving for a while, I stall. Yeah sometimes I still do that LOL then I need to turn it on or off several times before it starts. Again no turning sounds and no weird sounds just doesn't make any sound until it starts and then it goes fine Does not seem to be a battery issue as battery numbers on display read fine Thanks Jon

POST 2Original post

Hi - have you tried replacing the ignition switch? I have heard they can go flakey with odd and random problems. Paul

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No I have not. I kind of wanted to get a sense of possible causes before doing replacements but I will look into that. Thanks

POST 4Original post

Supposedly, the ignition switch on these cars can go out. If you had a helper, you could ask them to measure the voltage at the starter during the starting procedure. If theres voltage at the starter, but no action, then its not the switch. You could also check the voltage at the battery while you are at it. Is there also a relay to check? Lastly, theres a switch on the clutch pedal. To rule that out too, put the car in neutral, double check its in neutral, hold the starter position at the ignition switch and pump the clutch pedal to try to engage the starter when the pedal is fully extended.
