A buyer can look at two identical cars, one with no damage ever and one with repaired damage.
Leading evidence: 'Repair damage' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'quarter panel is all' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair bill' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It cannot be repaired without major cutting then welding in new QP.

Suspected cause
Probably a new quarter panel is all that is needed.

The responsibility of the Porsche owner is to resist the insurance company's attempts to foist a sub-par repair onto the car and insist the car be repaired to Porsche standards.

I live in a small town a ferry ride from Vancouver BC I send a local shop a pic , he's like that's an easy fix just heat up bang out and bondo, So I'm have it towed today to Vancouver to the only certified Porsche repair shop in Vancouver, I talked to them and they said the right stuff, replace the door, new quarter panel etc..
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Sorry to see that. Everyone OK?
Just went through this with my daughter. Doubt it's a write off, but depends on your year, make, model, etc.
My accident last year car appraised for $28,000. It was a low mile 99 C4 cab. They estimated about 80% of that before a write off.
If the hitter has insurance, they will get you a rental and get you fixed up.
Keep us posted
This isn't useful if you daily drive or the OP sadly, but if your 996 is a second car, you may want to consider Leland West's agreed value insurance. For my car it came to about the same price as my regular insurance but in the case of a total loss, they will pay out the agreed value ($30k for my 2002 996 C2 cab with 82k miles per KBB at the time of insurance). The caveat is that I'm limited to 3000 miles/year but commuting is allowed.
Glad your G/F is ok.
That looks like a pretty good hit. That is not a good place to hit a Porsche. The rear fender is part of the chassis/tub, unlike the front fender which just unbolts. The rear fender can be removed and replaced but it requires metal cutting, welding, and is an involved repair.
I'd only let a Porsche Approved Collision Center tackle this but not before I had the shop and the dealer put together a full estimate of what it would cost to return the car to its pre-collision condition. The car will need to have its running gear -- tires/wheels at least -- removed and placed on an alignment bench and the full extent of the chassis/tub damage determined.
My suggestion would be to use every legitimate means in your power to get the car written off and use the car's excellent condition and its good service history and other positives to push for a good settlement.
As someone already posted this part cant easily be replaced as it needs to be cut out. Most shops wont do this rather pull out the dent and then smooth it with filler. You will need a new door and if there is any suspension damage i think its a write off. The insurance is going to push used parts on you as they aren't required to provide new parts just similar or better than what was there at least that's geicos policy. Before you take any money try and get it totalled if it's close.
I just went through this with my sisters honda civic once all was said and done geico had paid out 17k on a 2008 civic with 88k miles. They wont total unless the damage is more than 75%.
My info according to Porsche is in order for a Porsche to be correctly repaired the car must receive factory new parts, bought through an authorized dealer. All mechanical work should be performed by a qualified Porsche technician.
The other driver's insurance company can't dictate to you how the car is to be repaired. It is required to make you whole and part of that involves putting the car back to its pre-collision condition. Porsche has stated very clearly in many pages of documentation what is required, the steps/processes it takes to do this.
The insurance company is not qualified to change this in any way, though it might try.
The responsibility of the Porsche owner is to resist the insurance company's attempts to foist a sub-par repair onto the car and insist the car be repaired to Porsche standards. If the insurance company wants to fix it like a Honda or something else, it should require its insured drivers to only run into Hondas or something other than Porsches.
This is really a bad place to be hit. It cannot be repaired without major cutting then welding in new QP. Your damage even extends further forward than the the QP. Only other choice is the entire bare shell which they will certainly refuse to pay for. I would demand the car be totaled. The repair estimate for a proper repair should be enough to convince them to total a 1999 model. The only question is what value they assign your car. Sorry about your loss but glad she wasnt hurt.
Posts like this make me wonder if people are starting to forget that 996s are 10-15 year old cars. Yes, it's a Porsche, but it's definitely an old one. And what "Porsche says" is really irrelevant.
Insurance is supposed to make you whole, yes, but go and read your policy. They are completely within their rights to use "Like Kind & Quality" parts. There's really no need to replace a 15 year old door panel with a brand new one, that's not making you whole, that's "improving" your car.
Body work is body work. There is no significant difference in repainting a brand new Honda accord or your used 996. Frankly, the new Honda is probably worth more...
That's not that bad of a hit. Clearly happened at low speeds. Doesn't look like there is much if any structural damage. Probably a new quarter panel is all that is needed. It will be expensive because it is a Porsche but not a difficult repair.
I'm betting that the entire quarter panel will need to be replaced....which will include the door jamb and related vin sticker. Not sure that replacements are available.
Push for totaling it.
Sorry to see this happen.
Thanks for the opinions and advice people.
It was a honda accord that hit her, a old beat up one the recieved virtually no damage but some paint loss to front bumper, he was probly doing about 15 mph
Your other issue will be a "diminished value" claim. A buyer can look at two identical cars, one with no damage ever and one with repaired damage. No matter who did the repair, the non-damaged one will be the preferred one, all other things being completely equal. To equalize it, the damaged one will be worth less. Insurance company will resist paying it, but will eventually give in if you are persistent enough to care.
100% true and I am well aware of that. This was such a great car, burned very little oil. No leaks at all, no problems
Here in BC Canada we all use the same insurance ICBC. Government run insurance company. I definitely won't let them push me around, gonna find out more next week when there adjusters look at it
Definitely find a good (high priced) specialist body shop - it will be totaled.
When my BMW 3 was hit lightly by a truck in that same rear panel (very minor damage), my body shop ordered a new quarter from Germany, and welded it on perfectly - $6k!
Was there anything else wrong with the car?
I'd fight the total, personally, as the number of 996's that are configured like mine is very low and I couldn't possibly afford to build my car as-is starting out with a stock C4.
If they insisted on totaled my car, I'd want to buy it back, get it fixed, and live with the salvage title. The resale value is already artificially low on these cars...might as well get MY car fixed back the way it was and continue to drive it rather than settle for someone else's car that will never be (at least in my mind) as good as what I had to begin with.
The claim came in at 8000cnd

[QUOTE=WestCoaster;11499416]Sorry to hear about the crash. Glad noone was seriously hurt. Which repair shop are you sending your car to here in
http://www.burrardautostrasse.com/
You got that right.
I had a mirror "picked off" my F150 on a narrow country road by an impatient redneck, he crossed centerline and his mirror clipped my mirror. It shows up on carfax as "collision left side". That's all the officer wrote. Upon seeing that carfax, a large nationwide appraiser viewed my F150 as though it possibly had a major collision. Not fair.
If the estimated repair cost is near 80% of the car's value, it will be totalled. Otherwise they will repair it. I don't know about BC but in Ontario they don't yet recognize diminished values.
Nope, in BC they don't give a ****, trying to replace a nearly new Michelin ps2 that got damaged with a economy tire. Trying to get them to pay for towing is even a battle
