OP, wish I'd seen this thread before I bought my wheels, I have a set of satin black 5 spokes installed currently.

The dealer also informed me that the front tires had been on the car since 2006 and they want to replace the front tires I elected to have all four done.

I believe I asked a dealer once about replacing a wheel and was told that about $4000 per wheel and then only if I returned the damaged wheel.

OregonDave, I am still trying to get my head around Porsche using a laminate film to achieve the chrome look.

Porsche doesn't support the use of standard chrome plating (often called soft chrome) on their wheels because allegedly it makes the aluminum brittle and prone to cracking.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
I would like the opinions from the group for the wheels in the below, as you all were "mostly" a huge help in my previous post. I am not a huge fan of chrome wheels, and I would like to either purchase or trade for the Carrera II 18in. wheels. These are 18in. and what I believe to be the standard twist wheels? Please correct me if I am mistaken. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I just purchased a 2001 Carrera 4 yesterday and it has those exact 18 inch chrome rims on it. I believe they called them high polished, and they were a $2,600 option if my memory servers me correctly. The previous owner liked to park by without using her mirror apparently and curbed the rear passenger side rim. I'm kind of a purist and I am having them all refurbished by the dealer (Pacific Porsche) because I just always want to keep the vehicles as stock and complete as they came right from the factory. But that's just me. Why don't you find another set of Turbo Twist and box these up and keep them? They look nice on your Birarritz White car! IMO.
Hartmn
Yea, those are the 993 turbo twists the made it over into the 996 generation. The chromed version were commonly found on the Millennium Edition of the mk1 996.
Hello Hartmn, thank you for the comments. Thanks for the information, and yes I assumed they were a nice option from the factory. I have thought about keeping them and just purchasing the Carrera II's as well. Thank you and you are close, its silver in color not white.
scanderson,
Silver is nice too! Classic color. I was just looking over my window sticker I think it was a $2160 option and not a $2600 option but still. I think you should keep them. I wasn't sure when I first saw the add for my car if Porsche originally sold these cars with chrome rims, but I was wrong. They are growing me! Keep them!
hartmn
Is this what you mean? They have 996 part numbers and were great for me. I like silver better than chrome myself but the chrome were an option at the time.
c didy, those are nice, but I am looking for the carerra II's in 18in. I might end up keeping the chrome twists as they have some nostalgic benefits since they were original to the car. Thanks!
Hello,
This is my 2001 Carrea 4 with 18 inch which were a factory option turbo twist in High Polish finish. I like them very much and I just bought this Porsche from a neighbor. She has an elderly mom living with her and had to make some vehicle changes! I hope you enjoy the pictures!
Eric
Eric, very nice car. Carrera white seems to be a rare color, but very nice when combined with tan leather interior. Normally, I wouldn't want chrome wheel on my Porsche, but yours seems to really compliment your car. Enjoy!
NuttyProfessor,
Thank you, I couldn’t agree more. It does work well with the car. When I receive my prof of owner ship from DMV I am going ask PNA if they would tell me how many were imported to the US in white. I’ve read on another post here that it was very few. I sent a email to a gentleman from the PCA and asked him and he said to submit the question to Porsche North America. He went on to say that he didn’t know if they would answer the the question but don’t give up.
Thanks again!
Eric
I just got a set of these myself for my millennium and am wondering if the "finish" technique is different than on the wheels released originally with those cars as they seem to have all peeled. Non 2000/ME cars with the option seem to be fine?
Just went and looked at mine. There is a texture to the metal. Not sure that can be polished. Also there is slight tint to the color, kind of like an ultra light cad plating color. My bet is they are anodized.
Is the AE chrome or (I thought) polished?
If I remember the press release , and I have it somewhere, but I think the shiny look wheels were result of a special peening process, which is probably quicker to produce than polishing, I think provides for a very hard surface.
I wish I had a set for my Targa, always like them, I think they would look even better on a dark car.
Mike
Do you have a AE or ME ?
There s no chrome on AE wheel.
From the press release dated 7/30/2003
The 911 anniversary model is in excellent shape for its 40thbirthday. Distinguishing styling features are the front cooling air openings adopted from the 911 Turbo. The side air intake grilles at the front are painted in body color. Other highly expressive styling details are the left and right sill trims, the shot-blasted, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels and the high-gloss polished exhaust tailpipes.
2-5 years ago I would have hated the chrome. I bought a 996 a few months ago with chrome twists and loved them. Its funny how things can come back in terms of style.
Mine are original to my car. I like them a lot. I had all four refurbished by my Porsche dealer. There not for everyone I get it. But they work for me! And they are 18's!
Jesus. Chrome = the color.
on the ME the polished (chrome) wheel effect is attained by laminating the paint onto a treated surface (the orange stuff you see when the CHROME paint flakes off.
Since the AE wheels are also described as being POLISHED I assumed the technique was the same or similar.
Anybody else want to nitpick verbiage today?
Ok, Ill take up that challenge. 😀
Chrome is an electrolysis process where a base is in the first bath, then moved through a series of tanks where the color is slowly increased until the level of desired shine/mirror like surface is obtained.

According to wheel enhancement on the ME a Mylar laminate.
must have been a better technique on other years and wheels with same effect.
I don't remember the exact cost as the car had new tires installed as well. I can look up the receipt if you need the exact cost. I think it was some where in the neighborhood of $1200-$1400 hundred just for the rims. It could have been less. One of the rims was done at the dealers expense because the previous owner had a service preformed and the dealerships car wash blew some of the finish off the right rear rim. In defense of the dealerships, the rim had some pretty extensive curb damage where the finish flecked off. I decided to have the other three refinished on my dime so they would all match! The dealer also informed me that the front tires had been on the car since 2006 and they want to replace the front tires I elected to have all four done. I believe they are just chrome and the inside surfaces of the rim are all black. As they came on the car originally and are period correct. I hope this helps.

OregonDave, I am still trying to get my head around Porsche using a laminate film to achieve the chrome look. Any idea why not just polish the wheels? Do you have a picture of the backside to show how the film terminates?
Thanks.
This was not a laminate film. The process for creating these wheels was written up in an old Christopherous article. Basically the aluminum wheels were plated with copper (the red that shows when the finish peels) then a very thin 'flash' coat of chrome followed by clear powder coating. The powder coating eventually fails and peels. It cannot stand any kind of pressure wash. Hand wash only. Porsche doesn't support the use of standard chrome plating (often called soft chrome) on their wheels because allegedly it makes the aluminum brittle and prone to cracking.
These wheels were standard on the 1999-2000 996 C-4 Millenium Edition (only 911 made and maybe around 300 came to the US in early 2000) and were a special order option for others. Lond discontinued due to the peeling problems. I've owned a 2000 Millenium since 2002 and two of my wheels peeled due to me stupidly taking it to a car wash. I don't know of any way to refurbish these wheels as Porsche was the only source for them. I believe I asked a dealer once about replacing a wheel and was told that about $4000 per wheel and then only if I returned the damaged wheel.
